Book excerpt: With the acceleration of China's “carbon peak, carbon neutrality” process and the deepening of energy transformation, the demands for flexible regulated resources in the power system will be further increased. The installed capacity of gas turbines will have a great room for its growth. Combined with the speed-up development of electricity-to-gas technology, the electricity-gas interconnection systems (EGIS) are becoming the essential energy carriers. The construction of EGIS promotes renewable energy consumption and low-carbon transition of the energy systems. At the same time, it also brings about some potential security risks. The interdependence of the heterogeneous energy flows makes it possible that a failure on either side of the electric or natural gas system may spread across the systems through the coupling devices, eventually resulting in the cascading failures in the EGIS. There is an urgency to establish an effective coordinated security mechanism to strengthen the regular coordinated risk management, the coordinated control, and the energy exchange capability under extreme events. This book reviews the latest research progresses on the coordinated security mechanisms for the EGIS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces novel methods for leak and blockage detection in pipelines. The leak happens as a result of ageing pipelines or extreme pressure forced by operational error or valve rapid variation. Many factors influence blockage formation in pipes like wax deposition that leads to the formation and eventual growth of solid layers and deposition of suspended solid particles in the fluids. In this book, initially, different categories of leak detection are overviewed. Afterwards, the observability and controllability of pipeline systems are analysed. Control variables can be usually presented by pressure and flow rates at the start and end points of the pipe. Different cases are considered based on the selection of control variables to model the system. Several theorems are presented to test the observability and controllability of the system. In this book, the leakage flow in the pipelines is studied numerically to find the relationship between leakage flow and pressure difference. Removing leakage completely is almost impossible; hence, the development of a formal systematic leakage control policy is the most reliable approach to reducing leakage rates.

It’s the first book to describe very recent methods for pipe defect assessment such as notch fracture mechanics and critical gross strain. Pipelines remain the least expensive transcontinental mean of transport compared to the rail-bound or terrestrial transport. It has become increasingly paramount to ensure the safe utilization of such plant in order to prevent economical, social and ecological losses. This book adds much to the body of knowledge in this area.
