Book excerpt: Compared with the original German edition this volume contains the results of more recent research which have to some extent originated from problems raised in the previous German edition. Moreover, many minor and some important modifications have been carried out. For example paragraphs 2 — 5 were amended and their order changed. On the advice of G. Pickert, paragraph 7 has been thoroughly revised. Many improvements originate from H. J. Weinert who, by enlisting the services of a working team of the Teachers' Training College of Potsdam, has subjected large parts of this book to an exact and constructive review. This applies particularly to paragraphs 9, 50, 51, 60, 63, 66, 79, 92, 94, 97 and 100 and to the exercises. In this connection paragraphs 64 and 79 have had to be partly rewritten in consequence of the correction

Book Synopsis Brownian Motion and Stochastic Calculus by : Ioannis Karatzas
Download or read book Brownian Motion and Stochastic Calculus written by Ioannis Karatzas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A graduate-course text, written for readers familiar with measure-theoretic probability and discrete-time processes, wishing to explore stochastic processes in continuous time. The vehicle chosen for this exposition is Brownian motion, which is presented as the canonical example of both a martingale and a Markov process with continuous paths. In this context, the theory of stochastic integration and stochastic calculus is developed, illustrated by results concerning representations of martingales and change of measure on Wiener space, which in turn permit a presentation of recent advances in financial economics. The book contains a detailed discussion of weak and strong solutions of stochastic differential equations and a study of local time for semimartingales, with special emphasis on the theory of Brownian local time. The whole is backed by a large number of problems and exercises.
Book Synopsis Group Cohomology and Algebraic Cycles by : Burt Totaro
Download or read book Group Cohomology and Algebraic Cycles written by Burt Totaro and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group cohomology reveals a deep relationship between algebra and topology, and its recent applications have provided important insights into the Hodge conjecture and algebraic geometry more broadly. This book presents a coherent suite of computational tools for the study of group cohomology and algebraic cycles. Early chapters synthesize background material from topology, algebraic geometry, and commutative algebra so readers do not have to form connections between the literatures on their own. Later chapters demonstrate Peter Symonds's influential proof of David Benson's regularity conjecture, offering several new variants and improvements. Complete with concrete examples and computations throughout, and a list of open problems for further study, this book will be valuable to graduate students and researchers in algebraic geometry and related fields.
Book Synopsis Perspectives on Grammaticalization by : William Pagliuca
Download or read book Perspectives on Grammaticalization written by William Pagliuca and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-08-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes deriving from papers presented at the Nineteenth Annual UWM linguistics Symposium held in Milwaukee in 1990. It focuses on the evolution of grammatical form and meaning from lexical material, which has reinvigorated historical analysis and theory and led to advances in the understanding of the relation between diachrony and universals. The richness and potential of some of the leading approaches to grammaticalization are here illustrated in thirteen selected papers.

Book Synopsis Set Theoretical Aspects of Real Analysis by : Alexander B. Kharazishvili
Download or read book Set Theoretical Aspects of Real Analysis written by Alexander B. Kharazishvili and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set Theoretical Aspects of Real Analysis is built around a number of questions in real analysis and classical measure theory, which are of a set theoretic flavor. Accessible to graduate students, and researchers the beginning of the book presents introductory topics on real analysis and Lebesgue measure theory. These topics highlight the boundary between fundamental concepts of measurability and nonmeasurability for point sets and functions. The remainder of the book deals with more specialized material on set theoretical real analysis. The book focuses on certain logical and set theoretical aspects of real analysis. It is expected that the first eleven chapters can be used in a course on Lebesque measure theory that highlights the fundamental concepts of measurability and non-measurability for point sets and functions. Provided in the book are problems of varying difficulty that range from simple observations to advanced results. Relatively difficult exercises are marked by asterisks and hints are included with additional explanation. Five appendices are included to supply additional background information that can be read alongside, before, or after the chapters. Dealing with classical concepts, the book highlights material not often found in analysis courses. It lays out, in a logical, systematic manner, the foundations of set theory providing a readable treatment accessible to graduate students and researchers.
Book Synopsis Mathematics across the Iron Curtain by : Christopher Hollings
Download or read book Mathematics across the Iron Curtain written by Christopher Hollings and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of semigroups is a relatively young branch of mathematics, with most of the major results having appeared after the Second World War. This book describes the evolution of (algebraic) semigroup theory from its earliest origins to the establishment of a full-fledged theory. Semigroup theory might be termed `Cold War mathematics' because of the time during which it developed. There were thriving schools on both sides of the Iron Curtain, although the two sides were not always able to communicate with each other, or even gain access to the other's publications. A major theme of this book is the comparison of the approaches to the subject of mathematicians in East and West, and the study of the extent to which contact between the two sides was possible.

Book Synopsis Laws of Rise and Demise by : Aleem Akhtar
Download or read book Laws of Rise and Demise written by Aleem Akhtar and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rise and demise of nations are man-made and can be humanly controlled. These are neither naturally determined nor divinely fated. This book captures the root-process presiding over the problems, challenges, and the opportunities nations of the world face today. America has a three-dimensional problem. Its “process controls” have equated its “purpose controls.” Internally, it has developed “integration energy traps.” Externally, it has created a dangerously “interest-based” world order. America must move to the “next level” of human collectivity; or an Armageddon might hit us all within the next few decades. The Muslims’ “idea of State” is too “invalid”, “antiquated” and perilously “anti-liberty” to allow large political systems to evolve in the Islamic world. It has been incessantly sinking back into anarchy. The “Arab Spring” is continuation of medieval, chaotic and “identity-based” shift of power, devoid of “value” and “political mass”. With the given trends, the world must be ready for more Talibans, Bin Ladens, and Al-Qaedas, possibly equipped with weapons of mass destruction. India and China have big “N-factor”. But at controls level, unsustainability afflicts China and an age-old “identity clamp” is failing India. Both nations will see reversals in near future. China must realize that “economic future” is a component of “political future”; not the other way round. India must understand that democracy divorced from political creativity leads back to tyranny and anarchy. The basis of the entire debate is “Integration Energy Theory” which explains the reality of human togetherness in a timeless and non-spatial manner.
