Book Synopsis Idiomatic Constructions in Italian by : Simonetta Vietri
Download or read book Idiomatic Constructions in Italian written by Simonetta Vietri and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is devoted to the analysis of Italian idioms with either ordinary or support verbs (also called light verbs). The research focuses on the exhaustive description of idioms, and is based on their systematic classification according to the principles of the Lexicon-Grammar methodology developed by Maurice Gross (1975, 1979 and further). A thorough examination of the literature shows strong disagreement on the acceptability of some idiomatic constructions. For this reason, the Web was used as a corpus to verify judgments on the supposed ungrammatical constructions. This approach showed that idiomatic constructions which have always been considered ungrammatical are instead perfectly acceptable if contextualized. The results obtained include the following: passive is not a "special case" when it concerns idioms, and idiomatic constructions show the same complexity as non-idiomatic constructions.
Book Synopsis 101 THINGS YOU SAY ALL THE TIME by : Charles Adams
Download or read book 101 THINGS YOU SAY ALL THE TIME written by Charles Adams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all use these expressions to a greater or lesser extent because they are helpful. They constitute a kind of verbal shorthand by which we can express our intentions and our emotions. We are “on cloud nine” or “in the pink.” We are “under the weather” or “at sixes and sevens.” Sometimes “things pan out,” or they just aren’t “up to snuff.”We know what we mean when we say these things, but we don’t always know what we’re talking about. How did these expressions come into the language? What are we really saying when we’re “happy as a clam” or “three sheets to the wind”?This book intends to give you some of the answers—while at the same time letting you have some fun. Three possible explanations as to origin are given for each commonly used expression. Only one is correct, and a number on the page that follows will tell you which one it is. The other two are simply fabrications, which I made up to confuse you.See if you can figure out which is which. See if you can “separate the wheat from the chaff.”CFA

Book Synopsis The Last Supper of Chicano Heroes by : José Antonio Burciaga
Download or read book The Last Supper of Chicano Heroes written by José Antonio Burciaga and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely considered one of the most important voices in the Chicano literary canon, José Antonio Burciaga was a pioneer who exposed inequities and cultural difficulties through humor, art, and deceptively simple prose. In this anthology and tribute, Mimi R. Gladstein and Daniel Chacón bring together dozens of remarkable examples of Burciaga’s work. His work never demonstrates machismo or sexism, as he believed strongly that all Chicano voices are equally valuable. Best known for his books Weedee Peepo, Drink Cultura, and Undocumented Love, Burciaga was also a poet, cartoonist, founding member of the comedy troupe Cultura Clash, and a talented muralist whose well-known work The Last Supper of Chicano Heroes became almost more famous than the man. This first and only collection of Burciaga’s work features thirty-eight illustrations and incorporates previously unpublished essays and drawings, including selections from his manuscript “The Temple Gang,” a memoir he was writing at the time of his death. In addition, Gladstein and Chacón address Burciaga’s importance to Chicano letters. A joy to read, this rich compendium is an important contribution not only to Chicano literature but also to the preservation of the creative, spiritual, and political voice of a talented and passionate man.

Book Synopsis Creativity and Convention by : Rosa E. Vega Moreno
Download or read book Creativity and Convention written by Rosa E. Vega Moreno and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-08-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a pragmatic account of the interpretation of everyday metaphorical and idiomatic expressions. Using the framework of Relevance Theory, it reanalyses the results of recent experimental research on figurative utterances and provides a novel account of the interplay of creativity and convention in figurative interpretation, showing how features ‘emerge’ during metaphor comprehension and how literal meaning contributes to idiom comprehension. The central claim is that the mind is rather selective when processing information, and that in the pragmatic interpretation of both literal and figurative utterances, this selectivity often results in the creation of new (‘ad hoc’) concepts or the standardization of pragmatic routines. With this approach, the comprehension of metaphors and idioms requires no special pragmatic principles or procedures not required for the interpretation of ordinary literal utterances, but follows from an automatic tendency towards selective processing which is itself a by-product of Sperber and Wilson’s Cognitive Principle of Relevance.
