The book begins with a description of the fundamental concepts such as algorithm, functions and relations, vectors and matrices. Then it focuses on efficiency analysis of algorithms. In this unit, the technique of computing time complexity of the algorithm is discussed along with illustrative examples. Gradually, the text discusses various algorithmic strategies such as divide and conquer, dynamic programming, Greedy algorithm, backtracking and branch and bound. Finally the string matching algorithms and introduction to NP completeness is discussed. Each algorithmic strategy is explained in stepwise manner, followed by examples and pseudo code. Thus this book helps the reader to learn the analysis and design of algorithms in the most lucid way.

Book excerpt: Understand Video Games as Works of Science Fiction and Interactive Stories Science Fiction Video Games focuses on games that are part of the science fiction genre, rather than set in magical milieux or exaggerated versions of our own world. Unlike many existing books and websites that cover some of the same material, this book emphasizes critical analysis, especially the analysis of narrative. The author analyzes narrative via an original categorization of story forms in games. He also discusses video games as works of science fiction, including their characteristic themes and the links between them and other forms of science fiction. Delve into a Collection of Science Fiction Games The beginning chapters explore game design and the history of science-fictional video games. The majority of the text deals with individual science-fictional games and the histories and natures of their various forms, such as the puzzle-based adventure and the more exploratory and immediate computer role-playing game (RPG).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to using the simple but effective Zhang-gradient (ZG) method to solve tracking-control problems concerning various nonlinear systems, while also highlighting the applications of the ZG method to tracking control for practical systems, e.g. an inverted-pendulum-on-a-cart (IPC) system and a two-wheeled mobile robot (showing its potential applications). In addition to detailed theoretical analyses of ZG controllers, the book presents a wealth of computer simulations to demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of the controllers discussed (as well as the method itself). More importantly, the superiority of ZG controllers in overcoming the division-by-zero (DBZ) problem is also illustrated. Given its scope and format, the book is well suited for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as academic and industrial researchers in the fields of neural dynamics/neural networks, nonlinear control, computer mathematics, time-varying problem solving, modeling and simulation, analog hardware, and robotics.

Book excerpt: "For over five years, I've helped 100,000's of people in 142 countries improve their habits. I originally built a habit tracking app to make it easier for myself, and it changed my life...I used it to lose 40 lbs, decrease my body fat by 7 points, and pay off over $100,000 in debt, all while spending more time with my family and on my hobbies. That was great, but the best part is that so many other people benefited from it too. Over the years, I've gotten a lot of questions about planning, tracking and reflecting on habits, so I set out to write a step-by-step strategy guide that's jam-packed with tips to make it easier to build good habits, break bad habits and achieve your goals."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, the very successful first edition of The Oxford Thesaurus has now sold over 126,000 copies. This new edition (NB new format), which for the first time includes antonyms in the main A-Z text, along with many additional new synonyms, broadens the book's appeal stillfurther. The Oxford Thesaurus remains the most useful A-Z thesaurus available today, with more practical guidance for the user than any other competing title.Around 350,000 synonyms and antonyms, covering general English as well as thousands of regional and idiomatic words and expressions, are listed in A-Z form for ease of reference. Generous and detailed labelling shows how to use synonyms, and example sentences throughout make it even easier toselect the correct synonym. The most useful synonyms (ie those that are closest in meaning to the headword) are listed first - a more helpful arrangement than a simple alphabetical listing under the headword. If the word for which you seek an alternative is not to be found as a headword, you can simply turn to the synonym index which lists 265,000 synonyms and shows you under which headword each synonym is located. In addition, all synonyms which also have their own headword entry (at which furtherrelated words may be found) are indicated by a simple cross-reference symbol. On the first edition:'handier than Roget both in being alphabetical and in offering example-sentences. The mot juste in just a mo.' Prof. Sir Randolph Quirk, The Observer.

Book excerpt: This three-volume set presents fundamental information about the most important events in world religious history as well as substantive discussions of their significance and impact. This work offers readers a broad and thorough look at the greatest events in world religious history, covering a wide range of religions, time periods, and areas around the globe. The entries present authoritative information and informed viewpoints written by expert contributors that enable readers to easily learn about the chief events in religious history, help them to better understand the course of world history, and promote a greater respect for culturally diverse religious traditions. The first of the three volumes covers religion from the preliterary world through around AD 600; the second, the post-classical era from 600 to 1450; and the third, the modern era from 1450 to the present. Each volume begins with a substantive introduction that discusses the history of world religions during the period covered by the volume. The chronologically ordered entries overview each event, place it in historical context, and identify the reasons for its enduring significance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While several books are available today that address the mathematical and philosophical foundations of fuzzy logic, none, unfortunately, provides the practicing knowledge engineer, system analyst, and project manager with specific, practical information about fuzzy system modeling. Those few books that include applications and case studies concentrate almost exclusively on engineering problems: pendulum balancing, truck backeruppers, cement kilns, antilock braking systems, image pattern recognition, and digital signal processing. Yet the application of fuzzy logic to engineering problems represents only a fraction of its real potential. As a method of encoding and using human knowledge in a form that is very close to the way experts think about difficult, complex problems, fuzzy systems provide the facilities necessary to break through the computational bottlenecks associated with traditional decision support and expert systems. Additionally, fuzzy systems provide a rich and robust method of building systems that include multiple conflicting, cooperating, and collaborating experts (a capability that generally eludes not only symbolic expert system users but analysts who have turned to such related technologies as neural networks and genetic algorithms). Yet the application of fuzzy logic in the areas of decision support, medical systems, database analysis and mining has been largely ignored by both the commercial vendors of decision support products and the knowledge engineers who use them.
