Book Synopsis Guided Wave Nonlinear Optics by : D.B. Ostrowsky
Download or read book Guided Wave Nonlinear Optics written by D.B. Ostrowsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this school, held at Cargese, Corsica (France) from August 12th to 24th 1991, was the presentation of the field of guided wave nonlinear optics in a comprehensive, coherent, and heuristic fashion. It seems appropriate that this school began with an historical introduction by Professor Nicolaas Bloembergen of Harvard, the acknowledged "father" of nonlinear optics, in general, and concluded with a round table discussion headed by Dr. Eric Spitz, the Scientific Director of a multinational electronics company interested in developing industrial applications of guided wave nonlinear optics. The lectures covered both the theoretical framework of the field and applications to basic scientific research, optical communications and technical instrumentation. Specific topics developed included materials for guided wave nonlinear optics, nonlinear interactions using integrated optical guides, nonlinear surface waves, solitons, fiber nonlinear optics, ultra-fast coupler switching as well as the related topic of fiber and integrated optical lasers and amplifiers. Lectures have also been devoted to squeezed states, chaos and strange attractors. The subjects covered by the school underlines one of the major ways in which this field has evolved over the past thirty some odd years. The path from the original experiments with materials requiring mega-watt power lasers to the recent developments in guided wave configurations using milliwatt power diode lasers is marked by the conjunction of ever improving fundamental scientific comprehension and continuing technological developments.
Book Synopsis Near-Field Nano-Optics by : Motoichi Ohtsu
Download or read book Near-Field Nano-Optics written by Motoichi Ohtsu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional optical science and technology have been restricted by the diffraction limit from reducing the sizes of optical and photoruc devices to nanometric dimensions. Thus, the size of optical integrated circuits has been incompatible with that of their counterpart, integrated electronic circuits, which have much smaller dimensions. This book provides potential ideas and methods to overcome this difficulty. Near-field optics has developed very rapidly from around the middle 1980s after preliminary trials in the microwave frequency region, as proposed as early as 1928. At the early stages of this development, most technical efforts were devoted to realizing super-high-resolution optical microscopy beyond the diffraction limit. However, the possibility of exploiting the optical near-field, phenomenon of quasistatic electromagnetic interaction at subwavelength distances between nanometric particles has opened new ways to nanometric optical science and technology, and many applications to nanometric fabrication and manipulation have been proposed and implemented. Building on this historical background, this book describes recent progress in near-field optical science and technology, mainly using research of the author's groups. The title of this book, Near-Field Nano-Optics-From Basic Principles to Nano-Fabrication and Nano-Photonics, implies capabilities of the optical near field not only for imaging/microscopy, but also for fabrication/manipulation/proc essing on a nanometric scale.

Book Synopsis Magnetic Excitations and Fluctuations II by : Umberto Balucani
Download or read book Magnetic Excitations and Fluctuations II written by Umberto Balucani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international workshop on Elementary Excitations and Fluctuations in Magnetic Systems was held in Turin for five days beginning 25 May, 1987. The workshop followed much the same format as the one with the same title held in San Miniato in 1984 (proceedings: Springer Series in-Solid-State Sciences, Vol. 54), that most participants contributed talks and provided papers for the proceedings. While many of the participants had attended the first workshop, 15 of the 40 invited review papers were presented by scientists who had not. The majority of the talks reported theoretical work concerned with the introduction of new techniques. However, experimental work was also well represented, not least because many of the reported theoretical studies were motivated by experimental findings, and a highlight of the workshop was an extremely stimulating session devoted to recent neutron scattering measure ments, on various systems, that exploited polarization analysis. The fine venue of the workshop, Villa Gualino, with its excellent facili ties and spacious accommodation, helped to produce a delightful relaxed and friendly atmosphere. For the use of Villa Gualino and significant financial support we are indebted to our host organization, the Institute for Scien tific Interchange (lSI). Additional financial support came from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), Centro Interuniversitario di Struttura della Material del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione (CISM-MPI) and Gruppo Nazionale di Struttura della Materia (GNSM-CNR).
Book Synopsis Fields and Electrodynamics by : Pieter B. Visscher
Download or read book Fields and Electrodynamics written by Pieter B. Visscher and published by . This book was released on 1988-10-11 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only text on this subject to detail numerical methods usually used in practice to calculate electromagnetic fields, and to integrate these methods with computer simulation. Thoroughly develops the basic mathematical methods which physicists use to describe fields (e.g., density, displacement, and electrical), demonstrating each with examples of applications to mechanical problems. Describe Maxwell's equations governing electric and magnetic fields and shows how these lead to physical phenomena such as electromagnetic waves, charged particle motion, electromagnetic induction, and other processes. Maxwell's equations are introduced in a discrete form--on a lattice--and are discussed in terms of the original definition of the polarization field rather than the more abstract ``dipole moment'' approach. Other topics covered include xerography, EMP, the magnetron oscillator, and boundary-value problems in the presence of superconductors, none of which are included in other texts at this level.

Book Synopsis INNC 90 PARIS by : The International Neural Society(INNS), The IEEE Neural
Download or read book INNC 90 PARIS written by The International Neural Society(INNS), The IEEE Neural and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neural Networks have been the theater of a dramatic increase of activities in the last five years. The interest of mixing results from fields as different as neurobiology, physics (spin glass theory), mathematics (linear algebra, statistics ... ), computer science (software engineering, hardware architectures ... ) or psychology has attracted a large number of researchers to the field. The perspective of dramatic improvements in many applications has lead important companies to launch new neural network programs and start-ups have mushroomed to address this new market. Throughout the world large programs are being set-up: in Japan the government has committed more than $18 million per year to its 20 year Human Frontier Science program; the DARPA and the US Navy have alloted more than $10 million per year each and other US government agencies are contributing to important but less ambitious programs. Neural networks are also a major research are in the supercomputing initiative. Europe has from the beginning taken an active part in funding major projects in the new field with BRAIN, BRA, ANNIE and PYGMALION (Esprit). Approximately $20 million has been invested to date since 1988 and new programs of nearly $30 million are being funded for the next 3 years. National projects in certain countries may globally double these amounts. Neural network conferences are attracting larger audiences than ever before. Prior to 1987 attendance never surpassed 300. The June 1989 IJCNN conference in Washington had over 2200 participants.
