Book Synopsis Artful Immorality – Variants of Cynicism by : Daniel Scott Mayfield
Download or read book Artful Immorality – Variants of Cynicism written by Daniel Scott Mayfield and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a term is overused, it tends to fall out of fashion. Cynicism seems to be an exception. Its polytropic versatility apparently prevents any discontinuation of its application. Everyone knows that cynicism denotes that which is deemed deleterious at a given time; and every time will specify its toxicities – the apparent result being the term’s non-specificity. This study describes the cynical stance and statement so as to render the term’s use scholarly expedient. Close readings of textual sources commonly deemed cynical provide a legible starting point. A rhetorical analysis of aphorisms ascribed to the arch-Cynic Diogenes facilitates describing the design of cynical statements, as well as the characteristic features of the cynical stance. These patterns are identifiable in later texts generally labeled cynical – above all in Machiavelli’s Principe. With recourse to the Diogenical archetype, cynicism is likewise rendered describable in Gracián’s Oráculo manual, Diderot’s Le neveu de Rameau, and Nietzsche’s Posthumous Fragments. This study’s description of cynicism provides a phenomenon otherwise considered amorphous with distinct contours, renders transparent its workings, and tenders a dependable basis for further analyses.

Download or read book The Shadow of the Father written by Jan Dobraczynski and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-09 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Shadow of the Father" - one of the most important books of Jan Dobraczynski, is based on the record of the Gospel, the evangelical text. It shows Joseph, the guardian of the Holy Family as a human being subjected to obedience to God and his intentions, a man who must understand and accept his part of being a shadow of the true Father of Jesus who will be born by his Miriam-chosen to him by God. Joseph, a native of Bethlehem, heir to the heritage of kings David and Solomon and the noble tribe of Judah, is up to Nazareth in search of the woman for whom he will sacrifice his life. Over there he meets a charming, friendly, yet mysterious girl named Miriam. However, starting to understand that between Miriam and him stands an impetuous force of abysmal proportions, as God's fist, will make their relationship continue unexpected ways: the One Who will be born and Who will become the liberator of the people scattered and oppressed in Israel. The book gives testimony to the values that never lose their importance: family, responsibility, patience, and true love."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Shade of the Saguaro / La sombra del saguaro. Essays on the Literary Cultures of the American Southwest / Ensayos sobre las culturas literarias del suroeste norteamericano written by Annamaria Pinazzi and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume springs from that fruitful project of scientific cooperation between the humanities departments of Università di Firenze and University of Arizona which was the Forum for the Study of the Literary Cultures of the Southwest (2000-2007). Tri-cultural, at least (Native, Hispanic and Anglo-American), and multi-lingual, today's Southwest presents a complex coexistence of different cultures, the equal of which would be hard to find elsewhere in the United States. Of this virtually inexhaustible object of study, the essays here collected tackle an ample range of themes. While the majority of them are concerned with the literatures of the Southwest, still a good third falls into the fields of history, art history, ethnography, sociology or cultural studies. They are partitioned in four sections, the first three reflecting the chronology of the stratification of the three major cultures and the fourth highlighting one of the most sensitive topics in and about contemporary Southwest - the borderlands/la frontera
