Book excerpt: National bestselling author of The Russian Concubine, Kate Furnivall spins a tale of war, desperation, and the discovery of love off the coast of Malaya. Malaya, 1941. Connie Thornton plays her role as a dutiful wife and mother without complaint. She is among the fortunate after all-the British rubber plantation owners reaping the benefits of the colonial life. But Connie feels as though she is oppressed, crippled by boredom, sweltering heat, a loveless marriage. . . Then, in December, the Japanese invade. Connie and her family flee, sailing south on their yacht toward Singapore, where the British are certain to stand firm against the Japanese. En route, in the company of friends, they learn that Singapore is already under siege. Tensions mount, tempers flare, and the yacht's inhabitants are driven by fear. Increasingly desperate and short of food, they are taken over by a pirate craft and its Malayan crew making their perilous way from island to island. When a fighter plane crashes into the sea, they rescue its Japanese pilot. For Connie, that's when everything changes. In the suffocating confines of the boat with her life upended, Connie discovers a new kind of freedom and a new, dangerous, exhilarating love.

Book excerpt: Captain Salty Sam and his crew were some of the most feared pirates of the Seven Seas during the 1500s. Whenever Salty Sam's ship the White Pearl was sailing near other ships. If any ship got too close to the White Pearl it was evident they would be fired upon and if any gold was aboard, it would be taken by Salty Sam and his crew. Salty Sam was about to meet his match when Captain Peg Leg's ship The Black Death came inches beside the White Pearl almost scraping its side. This just angered Captain Salty Sam. Salty Sam said, "No one!! I mean No one!! Treads the same waters as the White Pearl, without a fight?" Salty Sam shouted out to his men, "Get the cannons ready and when I give the signal, fire upon that ship, I want it sunk." His men were ready for battle. Salty Sam shouted out to the other ship, "Ahoy! What are ye doing in my waters?" Captain Peg Leg answered," This is what I'm doing," as he laughed and then said to his men" Fire!! His men fired upon the White Pearl and a fierce battle arose, but Captain Peg Leg's The Black Death ship was too strong for Captain Salty Sam's ship the White Pearl. After intense cannon fire, the White Pearl surrendered and Captain Peg Leg's men boarded the White Pearl and took all their gold as the ship the White Pearl was slowly sinking into the sea with its Captain and crew members. Captain Peg Leg said to his men, "That was easy ye mateys." and laughed. Then the ship The Black Death sailed farther out to sea in search of an island to bury the treasure. One of his men yelled out, "Look, Captain, there's an island in the distance that ought to be the perfect spot to bury my treasure chest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever one attempts to write about a philosopher whose native tongue is not English the problem of translations is inevitable. For the sake of simplicity and accuracy we have translated all of our quotations from the German unless otherwise noted. But for the sake of easy reference we have included the page numbers of the English translations as well as the German texts. Because there is a new translation forthcoming, we have not included references to the English translation of Ideen I. Since the German texts are readily available, we did not reproduce them in the footnotes. All quotations translated from Husserl's unpublished manuscripts, however, do include the German text in the footnotes. This work is greatly indebted to the criticism and help of Professor Ludwig Landgrebe, whose support made possible two years at the UniversiHit Koln. Garth Gillan and Lothar Eley also have contributed much to the basic direction ofthis work. Others such as Edward Casey, Claude Evans, Irene Grypari, Don Ihde, Grant Johnson, Martin Lang, J. N. Mohanty, Robert Ray and Susan Wood have been more than helpful in their discussions with me on these topics and in their criticisms of some of the ambiguities of an earlier draft. Likewise a special word of thanks to Reto Parpan whose insightful corrections were most valuable and to Nancy Gifford for her discussions on matters epistemolo gical and for her help in the final preparation of the book.

Book excerpt: His heart was filled with reverence, and he was filled with endless fantasies. Pulling out his sword, Qin Wentian moved like the wind, while the men moved like horses and the golden gecko moved like horses. In the early part of the last century, in the vast void between Jupiter and Mars, a space wormhole had appeared by chance. After more than a hundred years of diffusion, on March 31, 2027, it finally encompassed the Earth. Due to the rapid increase in density of spiritual energy, the life on Earth, which was accustomed to the barren environment, inevitably underwent drastic evolution. Most people had either lost their life or turned into zombies, and only a small portion of the evolved humans struggled to survive in a world filled with zombies ... Of course, since it was a disaster, the surviving humans, while struggling to survive, also gained the chance to evolve and become stronger. Earth's humans, who were at the edge of the barren land of the universe, slowly gained the possibility to integrate into the universe's family. Close]
