Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Development in the Child This movement, known as child study, has re ceived great impulse in this country within a few years, especially through the labors of Dr. Stanley Hall, who may be called the pioneer and enthusiastic promoter of the good work. Prof. M. W. Hum phreys, of Tennessee, and Prof. Edward S. Holden, of California, published their investigations into the vocabularies of children soon after Darwin published his biographical sketch of his infant son and Taine his essay Sur l'aquisition du Langage. Mr. E. H. Russell, Principal of the State Normal School of Worcester, Mass, was one of the first to commence in his school a systematic collection of data regard ing the development of children. Recently, Prof. Earl Barnes, in the Leland Stanford, Junior, Uni versity, has made large additions to our knowledge of the development of the conceptions of children in regard to art, religion, and some other fields. Every day one comes to hear of some new laborer in this province of pedagogy. The results recorded in this volume are chiefly of three kinds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mental Growth of the Pre-School Child: A Psychological Outline of Normal Development From Birth to the Sixth Year, Including a System of Developmental Diagnosis We have attempted a systematic survey of the ordinary and normal behavior of infancy and early childhood. In making this survey it has been our purpose to formulate the findings with sufficient concreteness to make them suitable for at least par tial application. The characteristics of infancy are so chang ing and so fugitive that orderly information becomes a practical necessity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Development and Education In writing this volume the author has had constantly in mind the interests and needs of teachers in service and also persons who are preparing to teach. Consequently those aspects only of mental development and of education which directly concern those who train the young have received attention; all strictly technical and speculative discussion has been avoided. No attempt has been made to treat comprehensively the psychology of childhood and youth or educational values and methods. Two questions have guided the discussion throughout; - first, How does the individual normally respond at different periods in his development to the typical situations, physical, intellectual, aesthetic and social, in which he is placed; and second, How can he best appropriate the materials and benefits of education so that he can utilize them to greatest advantage in daily life? The point of view is that afforded by present-day biological psychology. For those who may not at first glance see just what this point of view is, it may be said that one who regards human nature from the standpoint of biological psychology seeks to explain the behavior of a child or a youth on the basis of natural laws governing the development of his body, his intellect and his character. It is seen that the individual is at birth equipped with tendencies which represent some of the activities which have proved of service in the life of his ancestors, and these tendencies are manifested in varying degrees and forms in the course of development from birth to maturity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind of a Child My only apology for adding yet another to the many treatises on this subject is that I do not approach it from the point of view that I have indicated. My argument is that while we busy ourselves in the why and wherefore of a child's action, while we classify and dissect children in a fashion which no doubt has its fascination and interest for ourselves, we are losing sight of the most important side of childhood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Development in the Child and the Race: Methods and Processes In writing this book I have had rather conflicting aims. It was begun as a series of articles reporting observations on infants, published in part in the journal Science, 1890-1892. In the prosecution of this purpose, however, I found it necessary constantly to enlarge my scope for the entertainment of a widened genetic view. This came to clearer consciousness in the treatment of the child's imitations, especially when I came to the relation of imitation to volition, as treated in my paper before the London Congress of Experimental Psychology in 1892. The farther study of this subject brought what was to me such a revelation of the genetic function of imitation that I then determined - under the inspiration, also, of the small group of writers lately treating the subject - to work out a theory of mental development in the child, incorporating this new insight. This occupied my thought, and was made the topic of my graduate Seminar in psychology at Princeton, in 1893-94, the result being the conviction that no consistent view of mental development in the individual could possibly be reached without a doctrine of the race development of consciousness, - i.e., the great problem of the evolution of mind. I then fell to reading again the literature of biological evolution, with view to a possible synthesis of the current biological theory of organic adaptation with the doctrine of the infant's development, as my previous work had led me to formulate it. This is the problem of Spencer and Romanes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
