Book Synopsis Overcoming Temptation and Sin by : John Owen
Download or read book Overcoming Temptation and Sin written by John Owen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was Owen's earnest regard that his readers should be brought into a condition of safety against the wiles of the devil, to break the force of his warnings and entreaties by ingenious speculations and irrelevant learning. Not merely in the warm appeals interspersed with his expositions, but in the patient care with which no nook of the heart is left unsearched, does the deep solicitude of Owen for the spiritual welfare of his readers appear. To one who reads the treatise in the spirit with which the author wrote it, --simply that he may judge his own heart, and know what temptation means, and be fully on his guard against it

Book excerpt: Should the following course of discipleship look familiar in the arrangement of its topics and substance, it is because much of its content has been adapted from other widely-distributed courses of discipleship produced by various churches and individuals. We are much indebted to whoever may be responsible for the “original” work on the format of this study. There is nothing “deep” or “spectacular” about the material, but there is something very powerful about the pure words of God, and this power is often manifested in a life-changing way when believers gather around its truths and study its precepts with the help and direction of the Holy Spirit. This series of studies should provide the learner with a good introduction to that which we as believers have been commanded to observe. Ideally, the lessons will be taught by one believer to another (or a small group of others). If the scripture references are viewed and read the outline will pretty well “teach itself.” Each lesson is followed by some simple questions covering the principles addressed in the lesson. Another very important part of these lessons is the memory work at the close of each study. Memorizing the assigned scriptures will be essential to getting the most out of this discipleship course. It should be remembered that discipleship is not a series of lessons, but a commitment to follow the Lord Jesus Christ and a process of growth as He leads us in the Christian life. The completion of this material will not necessarily make anyone a disciple of Jesus Christ; but a disciple is a learner and contained in the scriptures provided herein are some of the truths that are an essential part of walking with the Lord. We hope that it will be approached prayerfully and that the Lord might use it to be a blessing as you grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Pet 3:18).

Download or read book The Nature and Method of Secret Prayer written by Samuel Lee and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Lee (1625-1691) was a learned puritan divine and preacher who ministered in both England and New England. What is prayer? And what is the difference between prayer and secret prayer? What is the best method for secret prayer according to Scripture for the Christian? Lee expounds Matthew 6:6 in a most able and helpful manner to show the Christian what God expects in secret prayer, “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” Lee covers the duty of secret prayer, managing secret prayer, various important directions for secret prayer, how one knows when their prayers are answered, how to discern if one has prayed well in order to gain the most profit from secret prayer, a number of questions on prayer both generally and specifically, and a final application of how prayer can be made most rewarding to the Christian overall. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book Synopsis Strike One; You’Re Out by : Frederick Smith
Download or read book Strike One; You’Re Out written by Frederick Smith and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-03-28 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written basically for Christians. The unsaved will not know these scriptures and stories I refer to. But even they can see them, and get curious enough to accept Christ. There are scriptures especially in Revelation that even Christians have never heard before. Ask yourself why you were never taught these things in church? Christians must start a personal and serious Bible study on their own. The Lord will guide if you will use what He shows you for His work. He doesn’t waste knowledge on people who will not use it. “Cast not thy pearls among the swine”. I pray this book either out of conviction, interest or fear, makes you really get into the Bible. Then re-think seriously what you have been taught while we still have time. “If the blind lead the blind BOTH fall into the ditch”. My punishment [and all Teachers] will be much worse if I, or they mislead you. We go to the Lake of Fire.

Book Synopsis The Psalms as Christian Praise by : Bruce K. Waltke
Download or read book The Psalms as Christian Praise written by Bruce K. Waltke and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two respected scholars explore the heart of the Psalms Following in the style of their companion volumes, The Psalms as Christian Worship and The Psalms as Christian Lament, Bruce Waltke and James Houston now explore the depths of Christian praise. Each volume uniquely blends verse-by-verse commentary with a history of Psalms interpretation in the church from the time of the apostles to the present. Since praise is the essence of the book of Psalms, Waltke and Houston have narrowed the focus to Book IV of the Psalter (Psalms 90-106), which magnify God and proclaim him king. To give voice to the psalmist, the authors (carefully) translate and explain each psalm and summarize its theological message. This is followed by listening to the voice of godly churchmen whose comments have stood the test of time. The Psalms as Christian Praise is ideal for anyone seeking to better understand the praise of Israel as found in the Psalms and how Christians also use these Psalms in worship.

Book Synopsis Ethics, Exegesis and Philosophy by : Richard A. Cohen
Download or read book Ethics, Exegesis and Philosophy written by Richard A. Cohen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-07-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reputation and influence of Emmanuel Levinas (1906–96) has grown powerfully. Well known in France in his lifetime, he has since his death become widely regarded as a major European moral philosopher profoundly shaped by his Jewish background. A pupil of Husserl and Heidegger, Levinas pioneered new forms of exegesis with his post-modern readings of the Talmud, and as an ethicist brought together religious and non-religious, Jewish and non-Jewish traditions of contemporary thought. Richard A. Cohen has written a book which uses Levinas' work as its base but goes on to explore broader questions of interpretation in the context of text-based ethical thinking. Levinas' reorientation of philosophy is considered in critical contrast to alternative contemporary approaches such as those found in modern science, psychology, Nietzsche, Freud, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida and Ricoeur. Cohen explores a manner of philosophizing which he terms 'ethical exegesis'.

Book Synopsis The Christianity Reader by : Mary Gerhart
Download or read book The Christianity Reader written by Mary Gerhart and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity is the world’s most populous religion, with some two billion adherents. As a world religion, Christianity has flourished because it is capable of taking on new forms in new contexts. To understand both the religion’s history and its present state, Mary Gerhart and Fabian Udoh gather original texts—from early Christian writings to contemporary documents on church-related issues—in The Christianity Reader. The most comprehensive anthology of Christian texts ever in English, this is a landmark sourcebook for the study of Christianity’s historical diversity. With newly edited, annotated, and translated primary texts, along with supplemental analytical essays, the volume allows Christianity, at long last, to speak in its many voices. Focusing on Christianity as a religion, Gerhart and Udoh select texts that illuminate issues such as theology, mysticism, and ritual, while also articulating the stories of previously marginalized groups, as well as those in new and growing epicenters of the religion. With nearly three hundred selections, the texts encompass the entire history of Christian writings excluding the New Testament, from Justin Martyr and Tertullian to Fabien Eboussi Boulaga and Teresa of Calcutta. Eight thematic sections cover biblical traditions and interpretations; early influences; nascent forms; patterns of worship; structures of community; philosophy, theology, and mysticism; twentieth-century issues and challenges; and the contemporary relationship between Christianity and other world religions. The Reader’s contents are arranged chronologically and are supported with introductions and source notes that explain the rationale for their inclusion and their context. Providing a far richer selection than ever before available in a single volume, The Christianity Reader will be welcomed as both a classroom resource and a work of reference for decades to come.
