Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind of a Child My only apology for adding yet another to the many treatises on this subject is that I do not approach it from the point of view that I have indicated. My argument is that while we busy ourselves in the why and wherefore of a child's action, while we classify and dissect children in a fashion which no doubt has its fascination and interest for ourselves, we are losing sight of the most important side of childhood. Perhaps my best excuse for letting this book appear is that, though I have no children of my own, other peeple's children have always been very good to me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind of the Naughty Child All parents with any intelligence are puzzled at times. Their child acts in ways they cannot understand, is naughty without reason, does those things which he ought not to do and leaves undone those things which he ought to do. Parents peer anxiously back into their own childhood for some explanatory remembrance of the child mind. But because they have forgotten, and because of the gulf fixed between the generations, very rarely are they able to comprehend the motives that direct the conduct of children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child Mind: A Study in Elementary Ethology Then, the book is intended for those who confess to total ignorance of the juvenile mind, who say they are afraid of children, because in these days they are so grown-up, you know, and who think that a child only cares for people who play, excluding from its affections those who merely speak. And the object of such miniature philosophy is this that in con sideration of the fact that there must be in England so many others better fitted than the present author to propound views which in themselves are valuable, it is hoped that some one, whose mental and sentimental equipment is of the strongest, will enlarge upon the subject, draw attention to the starvation which is now possessing the souls of so many boys and girls, and, by this means, feed natures which, if warped and dwarfed, will turn into future atheists, pessimists, and dyspeptics of bitter tongue and sarcastic speech. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of Religion in the Mind of the Child: A Study of Child Life But is the postponement of all teaching on the subject, until the child is older, a satisfactory way out of the difficulty? And, even if it works in practice, is it the best way? Those of us who believe in the fundamental importance of religion, and who believe further that the spiritual impulse, the capacity for religion, which each child possesses in some degree to begin with, can be starved in early years for lack of nourishment, would prefer to ask whether all such teaching need be postponed whether it may not be our present lack of method which is responsible for the confusion rather than as Professor Sully seems to suggest - the nature of the subject taught. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Development in the Child This movement, known as child study, has re ceived great impulse in this country within a few years, especially through the labors of Dr. Stanley Hall, who may be called the pioneer and enthusiastic promoter of the good work. Prof. M. W. Hum phreys, of Tennessee, and Prof. Edward S. Holden, of California, published their investigations into the vocabularies of children soon after Darwin published his biographical sketch of his infant son and Taine his essay Sur l'aquisition du Langage. Mr. E. H. Russell, Principal of the State Normal School of Worcester, Mass, was one of the first to commence in his school a systematic collection of data regard ing the development of children. Recently, Prof. Earl Barnes, in the Leland Stanford, Junior, Uni versity, has made large additions to our knowledge of the development of the conceptions of children in regard to art, religion, and some other fields. Every day one comes to hear of some new laborer in this province of pedagogy. The results recorded in this volume are chiefly of three kinds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The One I Knew the Best of All: A Memory of the Mind of a Child I should feel a serious delicacy in present ing to the world a sketch so autobiographical as this if I did not feel myself absolved from any charge of the bad taste of personality by the fact that I believe I might fairly entitle it The Story of any Child with an Imagination. My impres sion is that the Small Person differed from a world of others only in as far as she had more or less imagination than other little girls. I have so often wished that I could see the minds of young things with asight stronger than that-of very interested eyes, which can only see from the outside. There must be so many thoughts for which child courage and child language have not the exact words. So, remembering that there was one child of whom I could write from the inside point of View, and with certain knowledge, I began to make a little sketch of the one I knew the best of all. It wasonly to be a short sketch in my first intention, but when I began it I found so much to record which seemed to me amusing and illustrative, that the short sketch became a long one. After all, it was not myself about whom I was being diffuse, but a little unit of whose parallels there are tens of thousands. The Small Person is gone to that un discoverable far-away land where other Small Persons have emigrated - the land to whose re gretted countries there wandered, some years ago, two little fellows, with picture faces and golden love-locks, whom I have mourned and longed for ever since, and whose going - with my kisses on their little mouths - has left me forever a sadder woman, as all other mothers are sadder, whatso ever the dearness of the maturer creature left be hind to bear the same name and smile with eyes not quite the same. As I might write freely about them, so I feel I may write freely about her. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Mind: An Introduction to Psychology for Teachers This book treats in a simpler and more abbreviated form the same matter as that dealt with in the larger work entitled The Fundamentals of Psychology. It is intended for use by students in training colleges, by candidates preparing for such professional examinations as the Board of Education Teacher's Certificate, and by young teachers generally. It is intended to be merely an introduction to the subject Of Educational Psychology, and, it is hoped, will serve as an inducement to a further study of the subject. Chapters VIII, IX., and XI. Of this book have been specially added with a view to covering more completely the Syllabus of the Board Of Education for candidates for the Teacher's Certificate. The book should prove specially helpful in training colleges, where the amount of time devoted to Psychology, as well as other considerations, makes the use Of a larger and more detailed work impossible. Many minor matters have had to be omitted, and much Of what is expounded has had to be treated in popular and summary form. But, in spite of its brevity, the book will be found to give a clear account of the nature and development of child mind, so far as it is understood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-year old Emily greets her grandfather at the front door: "We're having a surprise party for your birthday! And it's a secret!" We may smile at incidents like these, but they illustrate the beginning of an important transition in children's lives--their development of a "theory of mind." Emily certainly has some sense of her grandfather's feelings, but she clearly doesn't understand much about what he knows, and surprises--like secrets, tricks, and ties all depend on understanding and manipulating what others think and know. Jean Piaget investigated children's discovery of the mind in the 1920s and concluded that they had little understanding before the age of six. But over the last twenty years, researchers have begun to challenge his methods and revise his conclusions. In The Child's Discovery of the Mind, Janet Astington surveys this lively area of research in developmental psychology. Sometime between the ages of two and five, children begin to have insights into their own mental life and those of others. They begin to understand mental representation--that there is a difference between thoughts in the mind and things in the world, between thinking about eating a cookie and eating a cookie. This breakthrough reflects their emerging capacity to infer other people's thoughts, wants, feelings, and perceptions from words and actions. They come to understand why people act the way they do and can predict how they will act in the future, so that by the age of five, they are knowing participants in social interaction. Astington highlights how crucial children's discovery of the mind is in their social and intellectual development by including a chapter on autistic children, who fail to make this breakthrough. "Mind" is a cultural construct that children discover as they acquire the language and social practices of their culture, enabling them to make sense of the world. Astington provides a valuable overview of current research and of the consequences of this discovery for intellectual and social development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exceptional Children For many years I have felt that the major difficulty faced by the child who differs markedly from others of his age and sex is not so much the fact of difference as it is the feeling of difference for which the objective facts are but partially responsible. Equally and in many cases more important for the child's general adjustment and happiness is the manner in which others react to his exceptional characteristics. Too much admiration and praise may cause the bright child to regard himself as so superior to his mates that he looks upon them with covert or openly expressed scorn. He withdraws from their companionship as they from his. Thus his brilliance becomes more and more closely confined to the narrow range of abstract intelligence; it does not extend into the areas of social and emotional behavior. He does not become more tactful, more sympathetic, more self-controlled, or even more honest and trustworthy. Yet under other conditions, his superior ability might have been brought to bear upon all these and other desirable areas of conduct as well as upon academic matters. In like manner, those who are defective in mind or body may be handicapped as much by their attitude toward their defect as by the defect itself. These attitudes are to a great extent determined by the behavior of those about them. Everyone, whether he is normal or defective, wishes to participate in the activities of others; he longs to be one of the crowd. Defective children have certain inescapable limitations, but most of them have further limitations imposed by their lack of confidence in their own ability to do things. Too much help, too much thoughtless sympathy forge chains for the handicapped child from which it is not easy for him to escape.
