Book Synopsis Vortex Rings and Jets by : Daniel T. H. New
Download or read book Vortex Rings and Jets written by Daniel T. H. New and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, recent developments in our understanding of fundamental vortex ring and jet dynamics will be discussed, with a view to shed light upon their near-field behaviour which underpins much of their far-field characteristics. The chapters provide up-to-date research findings by their respective experts and seek to link near-field flow physics of vortex ring and jet flows with end-applications in mind. Over the past decade, our knowledge on vortex ring and jet flows has grown by leaps and bounds, thanks to increasing use of high-fidelity, high-accuracy experimental techniques and numerical simulations. As such, we now have a much better appreciation and understanding on the initiation and near-field developments of vortex ring and jet flows under many varied initial and boundary conditions. Chapter 1 outlines the vortex ring pinch-off phenomenon and how it relates to the initial stages of jet formations and subsequent jet behaviour, while Chapter 2 takes a closer look at the behaviour resulting from vortex ring impingement upon solid boundaries and how the use of a porous surface alters the impingement process. Chapters 3 and 4 focus upon the formation of synthetic jets from vortex ring structures experimentally and numerically, the challenges in understanding the relationships between their generation parameters and how they can be utilized in flow separation control problems. Chapter 5 looks at the use of imposing selected nozzle trailing-edge modifications to effect changes upon the near-field dynamics associated with circular, noncircular and coaxial jets, with a view to control their mixing behaviour. And last but not least, Chapter 6 details the use of unique impinging jet configurations and how they may lend themselves towards greater understanding and operating efficacies in heat transfer problems. This book will be useful to postgraduate students and researchers alike who wish to get up to speed regarding the latest developments in vortex ring and jet flow behaviour and how their interesting flow dynamics may be put into good use in their intended applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vortex flow is one of the fundamental types of fluid and gas motion. These flows are the most spectacular in the form of concentrated vortices, characterized by the localization of vorticity (curl of velocity) in bounded regions of a space, beyond which the vorticity is either absent or rapidly falls down to zero. Concentrated vortices are often observed in nature, exemplified by atmospheric cyclones, whirlwinds and tornados, oceanic vortices, whirlpools on a water s- face, and ring vortices caused by explosive outburst of volcanoes. In technical - vices concentrated vortices form when flow separates from sharp edges of flying vehicles and ships. Among these are vortices flowing off the ends of airplane wings, and intentionally generated vortices for intensification of burning in c- bustion chambers, vortices in cyclonic devices used for mixing or separation of impurities in fluids and gases. One such remarkable and frequent type of conc- trated vortices is a vortex ring which constitutes a vortex tube closed into a t- oidal ring moving in a surrounding fluid like an isolated body out of contact with solid boundaries of the flow region if such boundaries exist. Formation and motion of vortex rings are important part of the dynamics of a continuum medium and have been studied for more than a century.

Book Synopsis Investigation of Synthetic Jets Heat Transfer and Flow Field by : Carlo Salvatore Greco
Download or read book Investigation of Synthetic Jets Heat Transfer and Flow Field written by Carlo Salvatore Greco and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthetic jets are devices able to “synthetize” a jet from the ambient in which they are embedded through a simple membrane oscillation inside a cavity with an orifice. Such features make them high reliable, silent and easy to be miniaturized. For these reasons, they are widely investigated as electronic cooling devices. The present research is focused on the design and analysis of a different type of synthetic jet device compared to its single classical configuration. Such a device his experimentally characterized through the study of its free and impinging flow field and the evaluation of its heat transfer performance.
Book Synopsis A Quantitative Analysis of Starting Jet Vortex Ring Entrainment at Low Reynolds Number by : Alex Geoffrey Dulude
Download or read book A Quantitative Analysis of Starting Jet Vortex Ring Entrainment at Low Reynolds Number written by Alex Geoffrey Dulude and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future propulsion of very small unmanned air and underwater vehicles operating at Reynolds numbers in the hundreds or less may be accomplished by pulsing a jet of fluid rather than more conventional methods of propulsion such as propellers and turbo jets as used by large-scale vehicles. Pulse jet propulsion produces trailing vortex rings and recent research concerning the formation and evolution of vortex rings has suggested that these structures may be exploited to augment the thrust and increase the efficiency of pulsed jet propulsion. Limited studies have indicated correlations between the length and shape of the generating pulse and the formation, fluid entrainment, and thrust augmentation provided by the resultant vortex ring at ring Reynolds number as low as approximately 13,000. The onset of vortex ring pinch-off has previously been shown to be a limit to this thrust augmentation. The design, construction, and implementation of a novel, piston-cylinder-type, vortex ring generator to confirm and further improve measurements of fluid entrainment and other formation characteristics has been accomplished. This apparatus was used in dye injection studies and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) studies to qualitatively examine the evolution of the vortex ring, and evaluate the effects of pulse length and shape on the formation of the vortex ring over a range of Reynolds numbers between 250 and 13,000. Results from this investigation at a Reynolds number of 13,000 are in close agreement with those of previous research, indicating that pulse shaping can delay the phenomena of vortex ring pinch-off by as much as 20% of the stroke length to diameter ratio. Results from lower Reynolds numbers show a trending toward even greater delay of pinch-off, as Reynolds number decreases. Tests conducted at Re=250 indicate a delay in pinch-off in excess of 400% over that seen at Re=13,000.

This volume contains a selection of papers presenting recent results of theoretical and numerical studies as well as experimental work on separated flows and jets. The topics include sub- and supersonic, laminar and turbulent separation as well as organized structures in separated flows and jets. The reader will find here the state of the art and major trends for research in this field of aero-hydrodynamics.
Book Synopsis Astrophysical Jets and Their Engines by : Wolfgang Kundt
Download or read book Astrophysical Jets and Their Engines written by Wolfgang Kundt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the documentation of the first Course on 'Neutron Stars, Active Galactic Nuclei and Jets', of an Erice School with a wide astro physical scope. The choice of the subject was made because of an apparent similari ty - stressed already at earlier meetings - of four classes of astrophy sical jet sources: Active Galactic Nuclei, Young Stellar Objects, Binary Neutron Stars and Binary White Dwarfs. They share important properties such as their morphology, high variability and large veloci ty gradients as well as - with some inference - their broad spectrum, hypersonic outflow and core/lobe power ratio. Despite this apparent similarity of the four source classes, quite different models have been put forward for their description: (i) The central engine of active galactic nuclei has been generally thought to be a black hole, in contrast to the central engine of young stellar objects and cometary nebulae which apparently is a pre-T-Tauri star, some six orders of magnitude less compact, and to the central engine of planetary nebulae which mayor may not be a binary white dwarf. (ii) The elongated lobes, or flow patterns, have been often interpreted as highly directional stellar wind outflows whereas in a few well mapped cases, the elongated flow appears to be 'pumped up' through a much narrower channel, or jet, both in the extragalactic and stellar sources.

Under the leadership of Gabriel Roy, this has been particularly true at the Office of Naval Research (ONR), where his team has focused on the three primary goals of combustion research: improving the efficiency, increasing the range and speed, and reducing the emissions and signatures of combustion systems. Advances in Chemical Propulsion: Science to Technology reports on the progress achieved by the outstanding team of scientists and engineers participating in the ONR Propulsion Program. Its chapters, each written by the scientists who performed the research, cover all aspects of the combustion process, from chemical synthesis to reaction pathways of the fuel, from combustor performance to the reduction of emissions, from the sooting problem to thrust vectoring, and from diagnostics to control. They discuss the relevant issues, describe the approach used and the results obtained, and show how the findings can be extended to practical applications. Richly illustrated and carefully edited for clarity, uniformity, and readability, Advances in Chemical Propulsion offers a comprehensive survey of the field, from pre- to post-combustion. It suggests directions for new research efforts and reflects the state-of-the-art technologies and issues that have a direct impact on combustion systems, both present and future.

Book Synopsis Bifurcating Jets at High Reynolds Numbers by : D. E. Parekh
Download or read book Bifurcating Jets at High Reynolds Numbers written by D. E. Parekh and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much interest in the use of controlled excitations to manage various types of flows. This work focuses on use of dual-mode forcing to alter dramatically the structure of round turbulent jets. Properly-combined axial and helical excitations can cause a round jet to split into two distinct jets. This Y-shaped jet, known as a bifurcating jet, exhibits spreading angles as high as 80 deg. Vortex rings are formed at the jet exit and propagate along the two branches of the jet. A vortex-filament code was developed for simulating the large-scale features of bifurcating jets. The motion and interaction of the vortex structures in this flow are tracked in a three-dimensional, Lagrangian coordinate system. This simulation showed that inviscid vortex interactions cause the dramatic changes in jet development and that spreading angle increases with axial Strouhal number. The experimental apparatus consists of an acoustically-excited, 2-cm-diameter air jet. The jet evolution is documented by flow visualization at velocities up to 75 m/s, Reynolds numbers up to 100,000, and Mach numbers up to 0.22. Instantaneous and phase-average cross-sections of the jet reveal the effects of forcing amplitude on the structure and spreading angle of axially-excited, helically-excited, and bifurcating jets. The primary conclusions of this experiment are that: 1) Dual-mode acoustic excitation can produce bifurcation in air jets at high Reynolds numbers and that the jet spreading angle increases with both excitation amplitudes; and 2) The excitation amplitude required to produce bifurcation increases with Reynolds number, but the corresponding excitation Strouhal number is invariant.
