Book Synopsis Sediment Records of Biomass Burning and Global Change by : James S. Clark
Download or read book Sediment Records of Biomass Burning and Global Change written by James S. Clark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomass burning profoundly affects atmospheric chemistry, the carbon cycle, and climate and may have done so for millions of years. Bringing together renowned experts from paleoecology, fire ecology, atmospheric chemistry, and organic chemistry, the volume elucidates the role of fire during global changes of the past and future. Topics covered include: the characterization of combustion products that occur in sediments, including char, soot/fly ash, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; the calibration of these constituents against atmospheric measurements from wildland and prescribed fire emissions; spatial and temporal patterns in combustion emissions at scales of individual burns to the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it's illegal to advertise tobacco products on television and Big Tobacco no longer sponsors major sporting events, it doesn't mean that cigarettes have been relegated to the back pages of little-read magazines. Quite the contrary. Though they might not be advertised-at least in the traditional meaning of the word-cigarettes continue to hold a prominent place in the media.

Book Synopsis Biomass Burning and Its Inter-Relationships with the Climate System by : John L. Innes
Download or read book Biomass Burning and Its Inter-Relationships with the Climate System written by John L. Innes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JOHN L. INNES University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada The interactions between biomass burning and climate have been brought into focus by a number of recent events. Firstly, the Framework Convention on Climate Change and, more recently, the Kyoto Protocol, have drawn the attention of policy makers and others to the importance of biomass burning in relation to atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. Secondly, the use of prescribed fires has become a major management tool in some countries; with for example the area with fuel treatments (which include prescribed burns and mechanical treatments) having increased on US National Forest System lands from 123,000 ha in 1985 to 677,000 ha in 1998. Thirdly, large numbers of forest fires in Indonesia, Brazil, Australia and elsewhere in 1997 and 1998 received unprecedented media attention. Consequently, it is appropriate that one of the Wengen Workshops on Global Change Research be devoted to the relationships between biomass burning and climate. This volume includes many of the papers presented at the workshop, but is also intended to act as a contribution to the state of knowledge on the int- relationships between biomass burning and climate change. Previous volumes on biomass burning (e. g. Goldammer 1990,Levine 1991a, Crutzen and Goldammer 1993, Levine 1996a, 1996b, Van Wilgen et al. 1997) have stressed various aspects of the biomass–climate issue, and provide a history of the development of our understanding of the many complex relationships that are involved.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Burns Volume 1 by : Marc G. Jeschke
Download or read book Handbook of Burns Volume 1 written by Marc G. Jeschke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the entire spectrum of acute burn treatment. Individual chapters deal with basic aspects of different burn mechanisms as well as the acute care of burn patients. Pre-hospital management, critical care and basic concepts of burn surgery related to the acute phase, as well as the use of skin and skin substitutes in early stages of therapy are addressed in this volume. Chapters on supportive therapies such as optimizing nutrition and fluid homeostasis, infection control and treatment, respiratory support and pain management complete the comprehensive approach to the patient in this early stage of treatment, while chapters on epidemiology, prevention and disaster management enable the reader to evaluate the given information in a broader context.

Book Synopsis Critical Care of the Burned Patient by : Lindsey T. A. Rylah
Download or read book Critical Care of the Burned Patient written by Lindsey T. A. Rylah and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-10-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary account provides an integrated and practical guide to the management and treatment of burns. Experts from all the major disciplines involved in critical care focus their attention on specific problems and areas of treatment involved in the care of burned patients. Although it is essentially a practical guide to the management of thermal injury, with explicit recommendations for courses of treatment, it also provides explanatory background information on the manifestations and clinical consequences of this common source of injury. Among them, the contributors encompass all the major facets of critical care of the burned patient: from initial assessment and monitoring, resuscitation, nutritional aspects, infection, anesthesia and surgical management, right through to postoperative care and prognosis. The volume will be useful to specialists in critical care, intensive and emergency medicine, surgery and anesthesia, and to all staff associated with intensive care and burns units.
