Book excerpt: Milton's Ovidian Eve presents a fresh and thorough exploration of the classical allusions central to understanding Paradise Lost and to understanding Eve, one of Milton's most complex characters. Mandy Green demonstrates how Milton appropriates narrative structures, verbal echoes, and literary strategies from the Metamorphoses to create a subtle and evolving portrait of Eve. Each chapter examines a different aspect of Eve's mythological figurations. Green traces Eve's development through multiple critical lenses, influenced by theological, ecocritical, and feminist readings. Her analysis is gracefully situated between existing Milton scholarship and close textual readings, and is supported by learned references to seventeenth-century writing about women, the allegorical tradition of Ovidian commentary, hexameral literature, theological contexts and biblical iconography. This detailed scholarly treatment of Eve simultaneously illuminates our understanding of the character, establishes Milton's reading of Ovid as central to his poetic success, and provides a candid synthesis and reconciliation of earlier interpretations.

Book excerpt: Brian “Bad” Phelan, New Zealander and bomb-disposal expert, likes to live dangerously. While on vacation on the French–Italian border, he helps bring a body out of a rocky, wave-swept cove. The dead woman bears striking similarities to a young woman he met years ago, under mysterious circumstances, shortly before she disappeared in a flooded French cave and Bad is compelled to investigate. Meanwhile, Jesuit Father Daniel Octave is running his own investigation into the truth behind the story of the life of the Blessed Martine Raimondi, a WWII resistance heroine and martyred nun. Bad and Daniel’s questions lead them to Eve, the beautiful widow of a celebrated French artist, and to Dawn, Eve’s twin sister, who seems to be a vampire. For, though they don’t know it, Bad and Daniel are looking for the same thing: a secret family. Sensuous and heavenly, Daylight combines wildly imaginative storytelling and a clear eye for atmosphere and place. Set on the beautiful Mediterranean coast stretching from Avignon to Genoa, much of the novel takes place in a world the tourist never sees, a world of caves and secret passages. It is in this “world beneath the world” that Bad Phelan and Daniel Octave finds themselves face to face with history and myth, with phantoms whose hearts are still beating, hungry, and able to break.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Milton Criticism seeks to emphasize ambivalence and discontinuity in Milton's work and interrogate the assumptions and certainties in previous Milton scholarship. Contributors to the volume move Milton's open-ended poetics to the centre of Milton studies by showing how analysing irresolvable questions – religious, philosophical and literary critical – transforms interpretation and enriches appreciation of his work. The New Milton Criticism encourages scholars to embrace uncertainties in his writings rather than attempt to explain them away. Twelve critics from a range of countries, approaches and methodologies explore these questions in these new readings of Paradise Lost and other works. Sure to become a focus of debate and controversy in the field, this volume is a truly original contribution to early modern studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows the common stories of creation on earth and humanity. Every religion has almost the same story, even very similar character names. Have you ever wondered why so many religions have the same story and the same pre-history? Perhaps it is because they all experienced the same event in pre-history before they got split across the planet and lost contact with each other and yet the stories of creation remained. There have been theories expressed that a group of advanced beings seeded the galaxies in the ancient past. However, what if this is only partly the case. Lets take a look back into one possible pre-history event that might give rise to such stories of creation. Once such advanced civilization had advanced intergalactic space travel capabilities. This is the story of that civilization starting with their home planet.

Book excerpt: Good Women Behaving Badly A spiteful boss, a defiant employee, a manipulative mother, a desperate housewife, an envious sister…honey, we know these women. We’ve lived with them, worked with them, or caught a glimpse of them in our mirrors. Now let’s take a look at their ancient counterparts in Scripture: Sarah mistreated her maidservant, Hagar despised her mistress, Rebekah manipulated her son, Leah claimed her sister’s husband, and Rachel envied her fertile sister. They were far from evil, but hardly perfect. Mostly good, yet slightly bad. In other words, these matriarchal mamas look a lot like us. “A Slightly Bad Girl is simply this: a woman unwilling to fully submit to God. We love him, serve him, and worship him, yet we find it difficult to trust him completely, to accept his plan for our lives, to rest in his sovereignty.” —from Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elongated skulls have been discovered all over the world. The Urantia Book states Adam and Eves descendants had elongated heads, and so did the Nodites, people of the land of Nod, descendants of the Nephilim and they were the sons of God of Genesis 6:4 where sons of God had children by the daughters of men. Adam and Eve were not the first two people on earth, see Genesis 4:8-17. Forty elongated skulls some with red hair still intact was found in Lovelock, Nevada inside a cave and they were believe to be seven to eight feet tall; also 3,000 years old elongated skulls with red hair still intact were discovered in Nazca Peru-more proof that Adam and Eves descendants traveled all over the world-in an effort to spread their genes. When geneticist analyzed the genes of the elongated skulls, they found the genes contain genetic material unknown in any human, primate, or animal. Adam and Eve came to our planet as biological up-lifters. Bodies were made for them when they arrived on our planet by beings from a higher universe called Avalon (a universe neighbor to our universe). These beings were called Avalon surgeons. They took plasma from the more advanced tribes of our planet and with some type of genetic engineering created bodies made of the dust of the ground (chemical of the earth) that were much more advanced than the humans of that time. Adam and Eve incarnated into those bodies and the spirit of God breathed the breath of life into those forms and they became living beings. Our ancient ancestors didnt know about genetic engineering and such, so they said God did it. To them those advanced beings were gods. People of our planet need to wake-up and stop thinking about material things all the time and begin thinking about the spiritual world, which we linger far behind in our understanding.
