Book excerpt: This wide-ranging exploration of the spiritual and scientific dimensions of dreaming offers new connections between the ancient wisdom of the world's religious traditions, which have always taught that dreams reveal divine truths, and the recent findings of modern psychological research. Drawing upon philosophy, anthropology, sociology, neurology, literature, and film criticism, the book offers a better understanding of the mysterious complexity and startling creative powers of human dreaming experience. For those interested in gaining new perspectives on dreaming, the powers of the imagination, and the newest frontiers in the dialogue between religion and science, Visions of the Night promises to be a welcome resource.

Book excerpt: Experienced by millions as supernatural assault, isolated sleep paralysis (ISP) feels like being awake and aware in bed as someone - or something - holds you down. These sensations are sometimes accompanied by frightening and realistic hallucinations. In this book these encounters with ghosts, vampires - and even succubi - are honored afresh from the perspective of contemporary dream science. Although terrifying, ISP visions can also be a reliable portal to other extraordinary states, including lucid dreaming, out-of-body experiences and otherworldly journeys.

Book excerpt: Through poetry and story, Daydreams and Night Visions moves us through Charles Henley's transformational journey from a boy hopelessly addicted to drugs, alcohol, and the strife that accompanies addiction, to a man full of hope, love, and joy. In this book of rhymes and wisdom, we get a glimpse of an emotional state of mind we might not otherwise understand. We get a first-hand view of the conversion from and remorse for a life of sin to the daydreams and night visions that Henley experienced during and after his conversion. These visions made him acutely aware of the struggle between good and evil as demonic forces battled for the possession of his soul. This awareness helped him not only prepare for the battle but claim victory over it. This poetic look at a life of a sinner once saved is a look at faith and hope at the end of the road of despair. It's not only written for those who suffer from similar addictions, it's also written to give hope and advice to friends and relatives who feel helpless as they watch their loved ones losing the battle for their souls—if only for a season.

Book excerpt: The transformation to a neo-colonial world has only begun, but it promises to be as drastic, as disorienting a change as was the original european colonial conquest of the human race. Capitalism is again ripping apart & restructuring the world, and nothing will be the same. Not race, not nation, not gender, and certainly not whatever culture you used to have. Now you have outcast groups as diverse as the Aryan Nation and the Queer Nation and the Hip Hop Nation publicly rejecting the right of the u.s. government to rule them. All the building blocks of human culture-race, gender, nation, and especially class-are being transformed under great pressure to embody the spirit of this neo-colonial age. The definitive analysis of postmodern capitalism, the decline of u.s. hegemony, and the need and possibilities for a revolutionary movement of the oppressed to overthrow it all. -bell hooks: Night-Vision was so compelling to me because it has a spirit of militancy which reformist feminism tries to kill because militant feminism is seen as a threat to the liberal bourgeois feminism that just wants to be equal with men. It has that raw, unmediated truth-telling which I think we are going to need in order to deal with the fascism that's upon us- -- bell hooks

Book excerpt: Take three of the leading names in contemporary horror writing, commission one-third of a book's worth of stories from each, and the result is DARK VISIONS. Stephen King leads off with three stories, including "Sneakers", about a very unusual haunting, and "Dedication", one of the most powerful and unsettling of all his works. Dan Simmons pays homage to Philip K Dick with "Metastasis", one of three highly accomplished stories. And George Martin rounds off the book with the brilliant werewolf novella, "The Skin Trade". DARK VISIONS is a brilliantly original showcase from three masters of the macabre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this collection echoes Siegfried Kracauer's statement that the lavish movie palaces of 1920s Germany served to stimulate peripheral vision and thus prevent the audience from being absorbed by the spectacle itself. In consideration of questions concerning spatial transformations in and around Weimar cinema, the eight essays in this volume, though some more explicitly than others, have Kracauer as their interlocutor. The first major critic of classic German cinema, Kracauer is patron of the optics that seeks insight on the periphery, inviting the analysis of those other spaces that are implicated, if not present, in the films themselves. The films treated in this volume include such Expressionist mainstays as Lang's Metropolis and Murnau's Nosferatu as well as generally less familiar works, e.g., Ruttman's Berlin, Symphony of a City, Jessner's Backstairs, Berger's Day and Night, and the mountain films of Fanck and Riefenstahl. Among the "hidden stages" analyzed are amusement parks, carnivals, department stores, train compartments, city streets, the womb, the theater, the chamber, basement apartments-and ultimately Neubabelsberg, the gargantuan studio-complex near Berlin where so many of these peripheral spaces came to be simulated. With references that range from set architecture to Christmas celebrations, from the poetry of Rilke to chamber music, from the introduction of sound to Macy's parades, and from an "urban unconscious" to a "cinematic sublime," Peripheral Visions is a richly nuanced collection that will be of lasting interest to students and scholars of film and German cultural studies.
