Book Synopsis Case-marking in Contact by : Felicity Meakins
Download or read book Case-marking in Contact written by Felicity Meakins and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, mixed languages were considered an oddity of contact linguistics, with debates about whether or not they actually existed stifling much descriptive work or discussion of their origins. These debates have shifted from questioning their existence to a focus on their formation, and their social and structural features. This book aims to advance our understanding of how mixed languages evolve by introducing a substantial corpus from a newly-described mixed language, Gurindji Kriol. Gurindji Kriol is spoken by the Gurindji people who live at Kalkaringi in northern Australia and is the result of pervasive code-switching practices. Although Gurindji Kriol bears some resemblance to both of its source languages, it uses the forms from these languages to function within a unique system. This book focuses on one structural aspect of Gurindji Kriol, case morphology, which is from Gurindji, but functions in ways that differ from its source.
Book Synopsis Differential Object Marking in Romance by : Monica Alexandrina Irimia
Download or read book Differential Object Marking in Romance written by Monica Alexandrina Irimia and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential marking as applied to direct objects has long been discussed as one of the characterizing traits of many Romance languages. There is, however, wide consensus that a detailed investigation into the nature of this phenomenon raises numerous challenges both at the empirical and theoretical level. Many questions are still being raised regarding which precise morpho-syntactic strategies count as differential object marking, whether the data can be unified, and, subsequently, how they are to be unified formally and theoretically. Additionally, a thorough investigation of this phenomenon is still needed for many Romance languages and especially at the micro-variation level. This volume brings together original papers addressing various aspects of differential object marking in Romance languages, focusing on micro-variation, from both a descriptive and formal perspective, touching on diachrony, language contact, synchrony, and using a large set of methodologies.
Book Synopsis Diachrony of differential argument marking by : Ilja A. Seržant
Download or read book Diachrony of differential argument marking written by Ilja A. Seržant and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are languages that code a particular grammatical role (e.g. subject or direct object) in one and the same way across the board, many more languages code the same grammatical roles differentially. The variables which condition the differential argument marking (or DAM) pertain to various properties of the NP (such as animacy or definiteness) or to event semantics or various properties of the clause. While the main line of current research on DAM is mainly synchronic the volume tackles the diachronic perspective. The tenet is that the emergence and the development of differential marking systems provide a different kind of evidence for the understanding of the phenomenon. The present volume consists of 18 chapters and primarily brings together diachronic case studies on particular languages or language groups including e.g. Finno-Ugric, Sino-Tibetan and Japonic languages. The volume also includes a position paper, which provides an overview of the typology of different subtypes of DAM systems, a chapter on computer simulation of the emergence of DAM and a chapter devoted to the cross-linguistic effects of referential hierarchies on DAM.
Book Synopsis The Paradigmatic Structure of Person Marking by : Michael Cysouw
Download or read book The Paradigmatic Structure of Person Marking written by Michael Cysouw and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-03 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates paradigms of person - both independent pronouns as well as bound person marking. Based on empirical and theoretical grounds, the author argues that the notion 'number' has to be redefined to deal with the cross-linguistic variation of person marking. Equipped with a new definition, a typology of the paradigmatic structure of person marking is presented, incorporating data from around 400 languages. Nothing appears to be impossible for the paradigmatic structure, although some patterns are clearly more probable than others are. Starting from the more commonly occurring patterns, the diachronic dynamics of paradigmatic structure are investigated by comparing close relatives that differ slightly in the structure of their person paradigms.

Book Synopsis Evidential Marking in European Languages by : Björn Wiemer
Download or read book Evidential Marking in European Languages written by Björn Wiemer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are evidential functions distinguished by means other than grammatical paradigms, i.e. by function words and other lexical units? And how inventories of such means can be compared across languages (against an account also of grammatical means used to mark information source)? This book presents an attempt at supplying a comparative survey of such inventories by giving detailed “evidential profiles” for a large part of European languages: Continental Germanic, English, French, Basque, Russian, Polish, Lithuanian, Modern Greek, and Ibero-Romance languages, such as Catalán, Galician, Portuguese and Spanish. Each language is treated in a separate chapter, and their profiles are based on a largely unified set of concepts based on function and/or etymological provenance. The profiles are preceded by a chapter which clarifies the theoretical premises and methodological background for the format followed in the profiles. The concluding chapter presents a synthesis of findings from these profiles, including areal biases and the formulation of methodological problems that call for further research.

Download or read book The 1989 FAO Standard Specifications for the Marking and Identification of Fishing Vessels: Use and options for review written by Davies, S., Hjort, A. and Markides, M. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marking of fishing vessels is important for their identification, to support the global efforts to promote sustainable fisheries, for safety at sea and to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. For this reason, the FAO Standard Specifications for the Marking and Identification of Fishing Vessels were developed and endorsed by COFI in 1989 as a voluntary instrument providing a standardized system for the identification of fishing vessels operating, or likely to operate, in waters of another State. Global developments have had an impact on the usefulness of the FAO Standard Specifications, specifically the increased use of the International Maritime Organization number as a unique vessel identifier and the establishment of the FAO’s Global Record. This document provides background to the development of the FAO Standard Specifications and the results of a study to assess the level of their adoption at the national, regional and international levels. It also describes progress in the areas of vessel identity, vessel tracking, different vessel types and catch traceability and how these impact the usefulness of the FAO Standard Specifications. Finally, the document proposes a review and update of the FAO Standard Specifications.
