Book excerpt: At the beginning of the 20th century, monarchy was by far the most common form of government. Today, their number has diminished, yet they continue to have charisma. This text examines the common denominators in those countries which have retained their monarchies and concludes with an argument for the role they play as agents of continuity.

Book excerpt: The wearer of the Stone Crown can wield unlimited power—if it can be found. A new evil creeps across the land of Torvald and its Three Kingdoms, where folk tales are nearly all that remains of the glorious dragons’ victorious past. Inyene, a ruthless noblewoman of the Northern Kingdom, enslaves villagers and plunders valuable resources to power mechanical dragons. With them, she’ll conquer her rivals’ territories, ascend the High Throne, and unite the realms under a single crown. But all is not yet lost when there are those brave enough to fight. Hope rests on the shoulders of sixteen-year-old Narissea, who dreams of escaping her shackles, and the injured dragon she rescues. What they discover in an ancient shrine holds the key to Narissea’s plans to free her people and puts her in Inyene’s sights. Intrigue, war, and betrayal consume the land, while in the air dragons fly. Failure to stop Inyene will doom the kingdoms… But even in victory, Narissea may be forced to sacrifice the one thing she wants above all: her freedom. The Stone Crown box set features Dragon Connection, Dragon Quest, and Dragon Freedom. Queen of the Dragons, Ava Richardson invites you to immerse yourself in a dragon-filled world with epic magic, fearless characters and, at its heart, the deep bond between dragon and rider.

Book excerpt: Against the seething political intrigues of twelfth-century Europe, two royal heirs surrender to passion as they vie for the English throne. At nine, Maud, an English princess, was sent to Germany to become the bride of the Holy Roman Emperor—a political alliance with a man her father’s age. At twenty-five, the widowed Maud must marry once again, this time to fourteen-year-old Geoffrey Plantagenet. But it is with Stephen of Blois, Maud’s fiercest rival for the British throne, that the headstrong princess discovers the true meaning of desire. Stephen, a descendant of William the Conqueror, believes absolutely in his God-given right to rule. Torn between his illicit passion for Maud and his own towering ambition, he knows he must choose. Stephen’s decision will wrench him from the arms of the woman he loves, ignite civil war, and lead to a shattering act of betrayal that, decades later, will come full circle and change the course of English history.

Book excerpt: What if, at the dawn of the American nation, Army officers plotted successfully to overthrow Congress and enthrone George Washington as King of the United States? Time has passed, and the year is 1925. Ravaged by more than a century of revolutions, the Union is falling apart. American King Augustine grovels at the feet of the British Empire, begging aid for his bankrupt kingdom. His war against the Republic of Louisiana is a resounding disaster. Repeatedly smashed by the enemy, the starved U.S. Army is fleeing the battlefield. An evil cult on the loose in the nation's capital of Philadelphia has thrown the city into a hysterical frenzy. Unfortunately for the royals, the cult's main gateway to Hell is hidden somewhere in the palace. The kingdom is desperate for a warrior saint to deliver it from evil. Americans look to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Johnny Washington-Bourbon as the perfect savior. He flies combat missions and heals with his touch. The people adore him. Sworn enemies put aside their differences to join his crusade. There's just one problem--twelve-year-old Johnny has far more courage than common sense, and his harebrained schemes to save America are disasters waiting to happen.

Book excerpt: Ellie Dray and her League of Archers are keeping Robin Hood’s legacy alive by stealing from the rich to help the poor, but when they discover someone is trying to steal the crown, they learn that some things may be out of their league. Ellie and her League of Archers are still on the run—living in Sherwood Forest, trying to protect the good parts of Robin Hood’s legacy by helping the poor in the neighboring villages and eluding the Baron’s men. But then King John dies unexpectedly and Ellie learns of a plot to kidnap the new king—who’s just a boy—and steal the throne. Can the League stop this scheme before it’s too late? Kirkus Reviews described League of Archers as a book that “doesn’t shy away from deep moral dilemmas often unexplored in middle grade novels and important to acknowledge in a story with life-or-death stakes.” And Booklist said that it was a “highly enjoyable adventure story that should appeal to a wide range of readers.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the First, or 'Great', English Civil War of 1642-6 was largely contested at regional and county level, in often hard-fought and long-lasting local campaigns, historians often still continue to dwell on the well-known major battles, such as Edgehill and Naseby, and the prominent national leaders. To help redress this imbalance, To Settle The Crown: Waging Civil War in Shropshire, 1642-1648 provides the most detailed bipartisan study published to date of how the war was actually organized and conducted at county level. This book examines the practicalities, the 'nuts and bolts', of contemporary warfare by reconstructing the war effort of Royalists and Parliamentarians in Shropshire, an English county on the borderland of Wales - a region that witnessed widespread fighting. Shropshire was contested during the First Civil War - when it became one of the most heavily garrisoned counties in England and Wales - and experienced renewed conflict during the Second Civil War of 1648. Based on a Doctoral thesis, and therefore drawing primarily on contemporary sources revealing much new information, To Settle The Crown examines key aspects of the military history of the English Civil Wars: allegiance and motivation; leadership and administration; recruitment and the form of armed forces; military finance; logistics; and the nature and conduct of the fighting. Furthermore, while previous studies have tended to concentrate on the Parliamentarians, the comparatively plentiful evidence from Shropshire has allowed the Royalist war effort there to be reconstructed in rare detail. This book reveals for the first time the extent of military activity in Shropshire, describing the sieges, skirmishes and larger engagements, while reflecting on the nature of warfare elsewhere across Civil War England and Wales. In also providing a social context to the military history of the period, it explains how Royalist and Parliamentarian activists set local government on a wartime footing, and how the populace generally became involved in the administrative and material tasks of war effort. Extensively illustrated, fully referenced to an extensive bibliography, and including a useful review of Civil War historiography, To Settle The Crown: Waging Civil War in Shropshire, 1642-1648 is a significant fresh approach to the military history of the English Civil Wars.
