Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), was a British Protestant Christian missionary to China, and founder of the China Inland Mission. The society that he began was responsible for bringing over 800 missionaries to the country who began 125 schools and directly resulted in 18,000 Christian conversions, as well as the establishment of more than 300 stations of work with more than 500 local helpers in all eighteen provinces. He wrote a book called China's Spiritual Need and Claims in 1865 which was instrumental in generating sympathy for China and volunteers for the mission field, who began to go out in 1862. Taylor was known for his sensitivity to Chinese culture and zeal for evangelism. He adopted wearing native Chinese clothing even though this was rare among missionaries of that time. Under his leadership, the CIM was singularly nondenominational in practice and accepted members from all Protestant groups, including individuals from the working class and single women as well as multinational recruits. Primarily because of the CIM's campaign against the Opium trade, Taylor has been referred to as one of the most significant Europeans to visit China in the 19th Century.

Also, while I try very hard to avoid actual theological discussions, the work is very much based on "external evidence" -- the manuscripts of the Bible, the evidence of other historical records, the findings of science, the folklore about the Bible. Some of this can be offensive to some, particularly those who try to find exact literal truth in the Bible. I hope you will accept it (or else not read it :-) in that light. If you are still interested, there is a lot of historical background about the Bible here -- not always direct links to the Bible, but the context of the nations among whom the Israelites lived. There is no Biblical mention of (say) Nabopolassar of Babylon, but his actions would deeply influence Judean history. Knowing even a little of that history can help understand the Bible. Also, where there are variant readings in the manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament, I note it. This may mean that we are uncertain what the Bible says -- and hence what it means. I try either to recover the original meaning or, in some cases, to assess the meanings of both readings. And then there are the tidbits of science and folklore and anything else I can think of.... The result is a grab bag. Some parts may be useful, some may not. The idea is to browse and see what strikes your fancy. With luck, you'll understand more about the Bible after doing so.

Fur from being a merely speculative point, it permeates the whole system of Christianity, and lies at the foundation of personal religion, and of all right views of the character and moral government of God. Whatever else may be considered indifferent or non-essential this cannot be; it is a capital article of that faith which was once for all delivered to the saints, and a mistake here may prove eternally fatal. Well might Luther call it "the article of a standing or falling church," i.e., the article on the reception or rejection of which the stability or subversion of the church depended. This then is the subject to which we invite the attention of our readers in this paper. And first, as to the nature of justification, or that in which it consists.
