Book excerpt: Want to identify fiction books that boys in grades three through nine will find irresistible? This guide reveals dozens of worthwhile recommendations in categories ranging from adventure stories and sports novels to horror, humorous, and science fiction books. In Get Those Guys Reading!: Fiction and Series Books that Boys Will Love, authors Kathleen A. Baxter and Marcia A. Kochel provide compelling and current reading suggestions for younger boys--information that educators, librarians, and parents alike are desperate for. Comprising titles that are almost all well-reviewed in at least one major professional journal, or that are such big hits with kids that they've received the stamp of approval from the most important reviewers, this book will be invaluable to anyone whose goal is to help boys develop a healthy enthusiasm for reading. It includes chapters on adventure books; animal stories; graphic novels; historical fiction; humorous books; mystery, horror, and suspense titles; science fiction and fantasy; and sports novels. Within each chapter, the selections are further divided into books for younger readers (grades 3-6) and titles for older boys in grades 5-8. Elementary and middle school librarians and teachers, public librarians, Title One teachers, and parents of boys in grades 3-9 will all benefit greatly from having this book at hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now is an opportune moment to consider the shifts in youth and popular culture that are signalled by texts that are being read and viewed by young people. In a world seemingly compromised by climate change, political and religious upheavals and economic irresponsibility, and at a time of fundamental social change, young people are devouring fictional texts that focus on the edges of identity, the points of transition and rupture, and the assumption of new and hybrid identities. This book draws on a range of international texts to address these issues, and to examine the ways in which key popular genres in the contemporary market for young people are being re-defined and re-positioned in the light of urgent questions about the environment, identity, one’s place in the world, and the fragile nature of the world itself. The key questions are: • What are the shifts and changes in youth culture that are identified by the market and by what young people read and view? • How do these texts negotiate the addressing of significant questions relating to the world today? • Why are these texts so popular with young people? • What are the most popular genres in contemporary best-sellers and films? • Do these texts have a global appeal, and, if so, why? These over-arching themes and ideas are presented as a collection of inter-related essays exploring a rich variety of forms and styles from graphic novels to urban realism, from fantasy to dystopian writing, from epic narratives to television musicals. The subjects and themes discussed here reveal the quite remarkable diversity of issues that arise in youth fiction and the variety of fictional forms in which they are explored. Once seen as not as important as adult fiction, this book clearly demonstrates that youth fiction (and the popular appeal of this fiction) is complex, durable and far-reaching in its scope.

Book excerpt: No matter how great or how terrible life is going, one thing is for sure--it's going to change. Sometimes it happens in an instant--you get married, you have a baby, you lose a loved one, you lose a job. Sometimes, it happens over time--you drift away from a friend, you discover you're not the same person you used to be, you find yourself struggling with doubt. But no matter what, we must deal with both the change we choose and the change foisted upon us. Jenny Simmons is no stranger to both kinds. In this thought-provoking book, she shares her final days as the lead singer of the band Addison Road and the subsequent journey that led her through seasons of change, lostness, and finding new life. The result is a painfully vulnerable, laugh-out-loud, honest, and hopeful reflection on life's uncertain times. This encouraging book invites readers to view their not-how-I-planned-it moments as holy seasons that didn't catch God off guard at all.

This book was released on 2014-01-20 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s and 1970s, Third World governments prescribed and imposed a certain kind of journalism variously called objective journalism or development journalism. They understood this as journalism restricted to reporting facts as dished out by their propagandists and did not tolerate the questioning of government policy. By development journalism, they meant the mere reporting of government efforts to provide services, amenities and infrastructures and the singing of praises anytime a bridge was inaugurated, irrespective of whether it was well-built or whether the contract to build was awarded according to the norms of transparency and probity. This one-sided journalism was prevalent especially in state-owned media and media practitioners in the few private news publications that existed who did not toe the line were subjected to constant harassment and incarceration. However, with the coming of well-trained journalism graduates into the scene in the 1970s and the advent of global liberalization in the late 1980s and 1990s, daring journalists like Sam-Nuvala Fonkem thought it was time to take the bull by the horn and start taking a more critical look at government pronouncements, matching policy statements with real action in the field; in short, moving from objective journalism to interpretative and investigative journalism. This collection of Sam-Nuvala Fonkems writings is a sampling of the fruit of that new spirit to dare where angels hitherto feared to tread, to hold public officials to account and to expose the falsehood cached behind the political masquerade of the ruling class.
