Book excerpt: This report represents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee (JECFA) convened to evaluate the safety of various food additives including flavouring agents with a view to concluding on safety concerns and to prepare specifications for the identity and purity of the food additives. The first part of the report includes updates on the work of the Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA) since the eighty-fourth meeting of JECFA and on activities relevant to JECFA with regard to the Environmental Health Criteria 240: Principles and methods for the risk assessment of chemicals in food (EHC 240). Following is a summary of the Committee s evaluations of technical toxicological and dietary exposure data for eight food additives other than flavouring agents - anionic methacrylate copolymer; basic methacrylate copolymer; erythrosine; indigotine; lutein and lutein esters from Tagetes erecta and zeaxanthin (synthetic); neutral methacrylate copolymer; sorbitol syrup; and spirulina extract - and eight groups of flavouring agents - alicyclic primary alcohols aldehydes acids and related esters; carvone and structurally related substances; furan-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbons alcohols aldehydes ketones carboxylic acids and related esters sulfides disulfides and ethers; linear and branched-chain aliphatic unsaturated unconjugated alcohols aldehydes acids and related esters; maltol and related substances; menthol and structurally related substances; miscellaneous nitrogen-containing substances; and saturated aliphatic acyclic branched-chain primary alcohols aldehydes and acids. Specifications and analytical methods were revised for the following food additives other than flavouring agents: cassia gum; citric and fatty acid esters of glycerol (CITREM); glycerol ester of wood rosin (GEWR); and modified starches. Annexed to the report are tables summarizing the Committee s recommendations for dietary exposures to all of the food additives as well as toxicological information dietary exposures and information on specifications.

Book excerpt: Cellular Agriculture: Technology, Society, Sustainability and Science provides a state-of-the-art review of cellular agriculture technologies. From cell selection to scaffolding and everything in-between, this book contains chapters authored by leading cellular agriculture researchers and product developers across the world.Driven by consumer desire for sustainable food production, animal welfare improvements, and better human health, companies around the world are racing to engineer alternative protein products with the best flavour, appearance, and texture. A major challenge many of these early-stage companies struggle with is having the foundational science and technical knowledge to start their journey in this emerging industry. This text provides detailed information on the current state of the science and technology of cellular agriculture. It combines the social aspects that need to be considered to create a level playing field to give each emerging idea the best chance at realizing the ultimate vision of cellular agriculture: satisfying the demand for protein around the world in a way that is better for humans, animals, and the planet. This is the first resource of its kind to take a practical approach to review the design, feasibility, and implementation of cellular agriculture techniques. With additional chapters on life cycle analyses and ideal transition scenarios, this book provides a resource for aspiring technology developers and academics alike, seeking evidence-based assessments of the industry and its disruptive potential. - Written by industry and academic experts for balanced perspective - Presents foundational information with practical application insights - Includes chapters on regulatory and policy issues - Reviews the sustainability challenges of alternative proteins

Book excerpt: This report represents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee convened in 2017 to evaluate the safety of residues of certain veterinary drugs in food and to recommend maximum levels for such residues in food. The first part of the report considers general principles regarding the evaluation of residues of veterinary drugs within the terms of reference of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), including chronic dietary exposure assessment of compounds used as veterinary drugs and pesticides, assessment of the relative bioavailability and/or pharmacological activity of incurred drug residues in animal tissues, acute reference doses (ARfDs) for residues of veterinary drugs and methodological approaches and types of data for assessment of veterinary drug residues in food. Summaries follow of the Committee's evaluations of toxicological and residue data on a variety of veterinary drugs: three antimicrobial agents (amoxicillin, ampicillin and halquinol), an acaricide (ethion), an antiparasitic agent (flumethrin), an insecticide (lufenuron) and an anthelminthic (monepantel). In addition, the Committee considered issues raised by the Codex Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods concerning sisapronil, an ectoparasiticide, and zilpaterol hydrochloride, a ß2-adrenoceptor agonist. Annexed to the report is a summary of the Committee's recommendations on these drugs, including acceptable daily intakes (ADIs), ARfDs and proposed maximum residue limits (MRLs).
