It is printed practically as I received it, but I have added one or two preparations which I felt that my friend would have included had he had time to prepare this, his last book, for the press. It is evident, I think, that he intended the book to be a supplement to his earlier volume, The Manufacture of Intermediate Products for Dyes, and it is possible that he intended to introduce illustrations of plant and appliances such as those which are to be found there. After careful consideration, I have decided to make no additions of this kind, not only because I wished to leave the book as he' left it, but also because the plant described in the earlier volume is of the same kind as that which would be used in the manufacture of the dyes, and duplication seemed undesirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Intermediate Products for Dyes Nothing is more important in the present revival of the aniline dye industry in England and America than a knowledge of the literature dealing with the manufacture of intermediate products. The scope of most of the books on the subject to which one naturally turns is necessarily limited, and the authors must perforce content themselves with describing the chemistry of the processes concerned. It is, however, of prime importance to the would-be manufacturer to have, in a convenient form, detailed information as to the preparation of the materials he proposes to make, so that he may be sure that he will not spend time and money in rediscovering, perhaps, some process that may have been already elaborately described in an obscure book or periodical. The chemist, confronted with the task of compiling such information, immediately encounters difficulties. It is rarely that he has ready access to a good technical library, and even if that difficulty is overcome, and much time and labour are spent in the search, he will be chary of asserting that he has exhausted the whole of the literature on the subject of his investigation. It appeared to the author that a concise account of the literature dealing with the manufacture of intermediate products for dyes might therefore be of considerable use, and in this book he has endeavoured to present such an account in detail so as to render it unnecessary to refer to the original descriptions. It may perhaps be stated that he doubts whether any single library in England contains the whole of the literature consulted. As a guide to the selection of these materials the author has made considerable use of the "Dyestuff Census of the United States" (published in the Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, 1916, 35, 1202), as well as of other information as to the dyes in general use, and believes that he has included all the more important intermediate products. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artificial Dye-Stuffs Their Nature, Manufacture: And Uses The present work is intended to form an introduction to the study of a branch of Industrial Chemistry which is of immense utility and importance. Little more than sixty years ago the artificial dye-stuff industry was conspicuous by its absence. To-day it is an invaluable commercial asset to a European country which has carefully fostered its development since its first inception, whilst, in our own country, it is an industry of vast potentialities. Moreover, it is an industry which is the rightful heritage of our country, where the first artificial dye was discovered and manufactured by an Englishman. With the impetus given to the dye industry by the Great War, many opportunities will occur, which the fortunate possessor of the necessary knowledge will be able to take advantage of. This book aims at providing the foundations of that knowledge. It does not pretend to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject - that would be impossible in a book of double the proportions of the present volume - but the Authors have endeavoured to make it more than a mere catalogue of dye-stuffs, and to explain the industrial processes of their manufacture. It was felt that, as the figures referred usually to pre war conditions in Switzerland, and having regard to the present unsettled state of the exchanges and of production costs, no good purpose would be served by attempting to give the English equivalents which, in any case, would in all probability only be misleading. In pur suance of this plan nothing is said of the composition and properties of the various dyes, mordants, chemicals, etc., Which are used. This is information every wool dyer should possess, but the author believes it is better dealt with in books devoted to Chemistry proper. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Dyeing This book is the result of two years' instruction in dyeing, in the class room and in the laboratory. It aims to be a systematic presentation of the principles underlying the art of dyeing, illustrated and emphasized by laboratory exercises. It attempts to apply to the teaching of dyeing the same methods of class-room work, coordinated with experiments in the laboratory, which have proved so successful in the teaching of inorganic chemistry and other branches of science. The reader will not find in this book, therefore, a collection of recipes for the production of particular colors, or detailed descriptions of more than a few of the more important processes of dyeing, or even a list of the multitude of dyes which are at the service of the dyer. For information on these points, special works, or manuals of dyeing, must be consulted. A clear survey of the field of dyeing does not require these things; rather, a multitude of details would obscure the general view which it is desired to present. While intended primarily for the student, it is believed that this work will prove of benefit to the practical dyer who desires a fuller knowledge of the principles underlying his art. The experiments hardly call for more apparatus and reagents than a dyer should possess for the purpose of making necessary tests of his dyes and chemicals.
