Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bedfordshire Most people in Bedford, and not a few outside, knew the late Charles Gore Chambers as a man of great learning, wide reading, and deep thoughts. All his pupils found him sympathetic and ready to meet them on their own ground, whether language or literature, history or architecture, and he could draw out their ideas and suggest just the right thing to them. On almost any subject he went into details with loving thoroughness. And so, when he took this book in hand, though he already knew the county well, he set to work to explore it systematically, visited almost every place, entered every parish church, investigated both the past and the present state of the lace and straw industries, and in general put all his energies into the task that lay to hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Edwardian Inventories for Bedfordshire A necessary accompaniment of this wholesale seizure of ecclesiastical property was of course the taking of careful inventories of it. A great number of these still remain, ranging in date from 1536, when those of the religious houses begin, until 1 5 5 3 - the date of the latest Edwardian returns for parish churches. This great series of 16th century inventories, despite its shameful origin, is of the highest legal, historical and liturgical importance. N 0 other country can show the like. Notwithstanding their obvious value, little more than half the inventories have hitherto been printed, and some of these are in comparatively rare publications which are not easy of access. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Visitations of Bedfordshire, Annis Domini 1566, 1582, and 1634 Sir Joseph Williamson, Secretary of State in the reign of Charles II. In the course of my work I was particularly struck by the similarity which exists between the Visitations of 1566 and 1582; this for a long time puzzled me, and were it not for internal evidence I should have hesitated ere I assigned Harl. Ms. 5186 to the Visitation of 1582, so exactly alike are the pedigrees which are common to both; but I think the explanation arises from the fact of there being an interval of only sixteen years between the two, and in so short a period it is not likely that many changes could have taken place. At the same time I am at a loss to account for the fact that the first two Visitations came so close together in point of time, as the average interval between Visitations in other counties appears to be from thirty to forty years; in many cases, indeed, this interval is exceeded; while, on the other hand, in the counties of Bucks and Essex, Visitations appear to have been made so near to each other as to allow Of periods of only eight years and six years respectively intervening. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Simmons, perhaps more than any other single scholar, is responsible for the advancement of the academic study of transport history. As well as being a co-founder of the Journal of Transport History, he wrote extensively on a variety of transport-related topics and was instrumental in developing the London Transport and the National Railway museums. Whilst his death in September 2000 at the age of 85 was a sad loss to the world of transport history, the achievements of his life, celebrated in this festschrift, remain a lasting legacy to succeeding generations of scholars in many fields. Concentrating on the theme of the railways, and how they dramatically affected the development of Britain and her society, this collection touches on numerous issues first highlighted by Professor Simmons which are now central to academic study. These include the men who built the railways, those who financed the enterprise, how the railways affected such everyday issues as tourism, the arts, and politics, as well as the lasting legacy of the railways in a country now dominated by the private car. This volume written by former friends, students and colleagues of Professor Simmons reflects these interests, and provides a fitting tribute to one of the truly great British historians of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Luton: With Its Hamlets, Etc The History of Luton has, hitherto, been merely fragmentary, descending scarcely to the middle of the eighteenth century, and confined almost exclusively to matters connected, with the Church; but the Neighbourhood possessing many relics of antiquity, and the Town itself having risen, within the last few years, to a prominent position in the Commercial world, the Author felt induced to believe that a collection of facts, relating to both, presented in a connected form, would not be unacceptable to the public. With this view, he has spared no pains in consulting every available record of former ages, or in col lecting every interesting event of later date. The present History is the fruit of his exertions; and he feels stimulated by the hope, and im pressed with the conviction, that it will be found more complete, comprehensive, and satisfactory, than anything that has yet been written upon the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Sketch of the Genealogy of the Family of Deacon: Originally of Bedfordshire England The following "Sketch" is intended more as a Key to a Pedigree, than a genealogy of a family. The writer having given a large portion of fourteen years to the investigation of the history of his family name, and prepared sufficient manuscript for some hundreds of printed pages of history, biography and topography connected therewith, being hindered by various delays from sending his collections to the printer; issues these few "Preliminary" pages for the satisfaction of those who may be interested; only regretting that after the great amount of labor, effort and correspondence expended ungrudgingly, this meagre result will justify the exclamation.
