Book excerpt: This paper examines how changing gender roles affect the health outcomes of male and female informal caregivers. Informal caregivers, who provide unpaid assistance to sick or disabled family and friends, are subject to greater health decline than non caregivers since the caregiving role is generally in addition to other roles such as worker, mother/father and/or wife/husband. I argue that the differences between male and female caregiver's overall health are largely similar due to changing gender roles influenced by women's increased participation in the labor force and changing family structures. The cross sectional data, Chronic Illness and Caregiving, compiled in 2000 was used for analysis. The findings show that employment status, marital status, income, life satisfaction and paid help are positively related to the overall health of caregivers. Predictors of overall health do not differ significantly by gender or race. The findings support the argument that males and females have similar health outcomes to the caregiving role due to rewards and resources gained from additional roles.
