Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From Early New York History The history of our state is not well known by its own sons and daughters. There is little opportunity for our boys and girls to become acquainted with it. Its story is very briefly and imperfectly told in our school histories. This perhaps is necessarily so. It is because the author feels the need of having the history of the more important events that have occurred in our state known to the boys and girls who arc growing up that this volume has been written. The early inhabitants of New England kept diaries and their descendants have written histories, consequently the part that New England, particularly Massachusetts, took in the development of our country has been fully, possibly a little boastfully, told by the loyal descendants of those who contributed so much toward making the history of our country glorious. On the other hand the early Dutch in New York did their duty as they saw it. fought if called upon to do so, then went back to their homes, sat and smoked their pipes, and said little or nothing of their deeds. They kept no diaries. Their descendants have not written histories: so the story of the battle of Golden Hill has not been told, as has that of the Boston Massacre, which occurred later. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the City of New York, Vol. 1 The earliest record of the existence of the American Continent is found among the literary legacies of the Icelanders of the tenth century, who were superior to the continental people of that age both in mental vigor and physical endurance. But their discoveries were the result of hap hazard adventure rather than scientific probabilities, and their efforts at colonization were signal failures. From their geographical works we find that they supposed these western lands to be a part of Europe; and, while the accounts of their expeditions were carefully preserved, not a line was committed to parchment until many centuries had passed, so that there is very little reason for presuming that succeeding generations were materially benefited by reason of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Behind Manhattan Gables: A Story of New Amsterdam 1663-1664 Would a resident of New York fully appreciate all the things in the past helping to make it grand Would an outsider, rejoicing as a broad-minded American in New York's greatness, understand everything con tributing to that success? Would a Hollander know what grand foundations some of his own kin, it may be, laid here in America Would a young student of English history know of that early New York to which brave and adventurous Englishmen came, to live and rule there? Then all these must be students in the homes, the shops, the streets of little New Amsterdam. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The story of American progress is builded upon matters of even greater importance than its records of wars, of politics, and of men of renown. Between the lines of every history should be read the unwritten but not less notable story of the people. The family and descendants of Tennis Jansen, the honest burgher of the Winckel Street, may have had no existence in fact, but they can stand as types of those living, laboring folk, the people, whose daily duties, activities, cares and needs, are a part at once of the story and the success of the great State of New York. If any one feels inclined to doubt this, let him endeavor to locate the site of almost any important building of the past from What he can find in printed books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the City of New York The design of the author of this volume has been to trace the progress of the city of New York in such a manner as to illustrate, to the reader of the present day, its gradual development, from a Wilderness condition, through the maturing stages of a hamlet, a \illage and a city. It has been his study to follow, with minute attention, the different paths pursued in extending the habitations of the town, and to 'note the circumstances which Operated to establish the lines of the early thoroughfares, and the laying out of the plan of that part of the city originally settled. The names. Family circumstances, and 'many biographical facts connected with the inhabitants of the town, in verv early times, will be found amply referred to in the body of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of New York: A Story for All Young People The bayonets gleamed brightly in the sun, as their steady rows came up the avenue. A strong squad of blue-coated policeman marched in advance to clear the way, and behind them marched the band. "Ur-r-r-ur-rub-a-dub-dub-boom-bomb-ur-rr-whang-clang!" for at that moment the shrilling of the fifes and the roll of the drums were lost in a clash of cymbals and in a storm of martial music. That grand burst of sound lasted only for a minute or so, and then a tune which Barry Redding knew seemed to find wings and to spread them and fly up above all other noises, so that it could make itself heard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the City of New York: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time The preparation of this work was first suggested by the need of collecting the floating facts relative to the history and growth of our city, and condensing them into a compact form for the use of the general reader. In the short space of two hundred and fifty years, New York has sprung up, as it were, by magic, from a hamlet of four wretched huts, into the commercial metropolis of the western hemisphere. The many changes that have occurred during this time have been noted by lovers of their native city, who have made collections from time to time of facts and incidents invaluable to the historian yet these are scattered among numerous volumes, where few have time to seek and unearth them. Histories of the State also abound but there is not a single history of the city of New York from its earliest settlement to the present time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An imaginary historian. One immaculately imagined history. Told from the invented Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker’s perspective, Washington Irving’s ‘A History of New York’ weaves a rip-roaringly funny and dangerously dark account of the rise – and fall- of The Big Apple. Kick-starting with the creation of the world, we follow the origins of life and love as we know it, through to the new world discoveries and dangers of the Dutch Dynasty. Crafting a tale full of mystery and might, Irving’s satirical ‘A History of New York’ is ideal for American literature fans of Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz and Jim Broadbent in ‘Gangs of New York’. Washington Irving (1783- 1859) was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. A prolific author, Irving wrote ‘The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent’, ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ and ‘Rip Van Winkle.’ Whilst his celebrated historical biographies span Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad and George Washington, his 15th-century histories of Span explore Alhambra, Christopher Columbus and the Moors. Having served as American ambassador to Spain in the 1840s, Irving remains a rich cultural insight into both American and Spanish history. His human touch and deep emotional insight are reflected throughout his thought-provoking novels.
