Book excerpt: Now a new motion picture starring Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, and Hayley Law! “Truly the smartest and funniest book about spontaneous combustion you will ever read.” –John Green, #1 bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars Mara Carlyle’s senior year is going as normally as could be expected, until fellow senior Katelyn Ogden explodes during third period pre-calc. Katelyn is the first, but she won’t be the last teenager to blow up without warning or explanation. As the national eye turns to Mara’s suburban New Jersey hometown, the FBI rolls in and the search for a reason is on. Mara narrates the end of their world as she knows it while trying to make it to graduation in one piece. It’s an explosive year punctuated by romance, quarantine, lifelong friendship, hallucinogenic mushrooms, bloggers, ice cream trucks, and Bon Jovi. Aaron Starmer rewrites the rulebook with Spontaneous. But beneath the outrageous is a ridiculously funny, super honest, and truly moving exemplar of the absurd and raw truths of being a teenager in the 21st century . . . and the heartache of saying goodbye. “Wildly inventive.” –Entertainment Weekly “Must List” “A comically surreal novel that will blow your mind.” –People Magazine

Increasingly, scientific evidence shows us that true satisfaction and well-being come only from within. Dr. Andrew Weil has proven that the best way to maintain optimum physical health is to draw on both conventional and alternative medicine. Now, in Spontaneous Happiness, he gives us the foundation for attaining and sustaining optimum emotional health. Rooted in Dr. Weil's pioneering work in integrative medicine, the book suggests a reinterpretation of the notion of happiness, discusses the limitations of the biomedical model in treating depression, and elaborates on the inseparability of body and mind. Dr. Weil offers an array of scientifically proven strategies from Eastern and Western psychology to counteract low mood and enhance contentment, comfort, resilience, serenity, and emotional balance. Drawn from psychotherapy, mindfulness training, Buddhist psychology, nutritional science, and more, these strategies include body-oriented therapies to support emotional wellness, techniques for managing stress and anxiety and changing mental habits that keep us stuck in negative patterns, and advice on developing a spiritual dimension in our lives. Lastly, Dr. Weil presents an eight-week program that can be customized according to specific needs, with short- and long-term advice on nutrition, exercise, supplements, environment, lifestyle, and much more. Whether you are struggling with depression or simply want to feel happier, Dr. Weil's revolutionary approach will shift the paradigm of emotional health and help you achieve greater contentment in your life.

Book excerpt: When Auntie Ned spontaneously combusts, she leaves behind a pair of smoking orthopedic shoes and a house that she wills to her best friend's daughters. Amy and Gwendolyn are sisters--closer than close--who move into Ned's bungalow and inherit her legacies: a closet full of housedresses, a freezer full of meat, and the passionate flames of unrequited desire. Amy's appetites--for meat, for sex, for getting her way--are ferocious, while Gwendolyn longs for a more normal existence but can't refuse her big sister anything at all. Not the intrusion of Dr. Minor, Professor of Pyrophenomena, who has come to investigate Auntie Ned's death. And not the presence in their bed of Roosevelt, a troubled carpenter whose steamy entanglement with the sisters will either save them all or create a situation that's bound to combust. ...a good Hollywood thriller... as well done as an exercise in flash defrosting. Spontaneous microwaves rather than thaws... - Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: An argument for a Copernican revolution in our consideration of mental features—a shift in which the world-brain problem supersedes the mind-body problem. Philosophers have long debated the mind-body problem—whether to attribute such mental features as consciousness to mind or to body. Meanwhile, neuroscientists search for empirical answers, seeking neural correlates for consciousness, self, and free will. In this book, Georg Northoff does not propose new solutions to the mind-body problem; instead, he questions the problem itself, arguing that it is an empirically, ontologically, and conceptually implausible way to address the existence and reality of mental features. We are better off, he contends, by addressing consciousness and other mental features in terms of the relationship between world and brain; philosophers should consider the world-brain problem rather than the mind-body problem. This calls for a Copernican shift in vantage point—from within the mind or brain to beyond the brain—in our consideration of mental features. Northoff, a neuroscientist, psychiatrist, and philosopher, explains that empirical evidence suggests that the brain's spontaneous activity and its spatiotemporal structure are central to aligning and integrating the brain within the world. This spatiotemporal structure allows the brain to extend beyond itself into body and world, creating the “world-brain relation” that is central to mental features. Northoff makes his argument in empirical, ontological, and epistemic-methodological terms. He discusses current models of the brain and applies these models to recent data on neuronal features underlying consciousness and proposes the world-brain relation as the ontological predisposition for consciousness.

Book excerpt: Identifying a new approach to disaster response: spontaneous, compassionate, and impromptu actions to alleviate suffering. In Spontaneous Venturing, Dean Shepherd and Trenton Williams identify and describe a new approach for responding to disaster and suffering: the local organizing of spontaneous, compassionate, and impromptu actions—the rapid emergence of a compassionate venture. This approach, termed by the authors “spontaneous venturing,” can be more effective than the traditional “command-and-control” methods of large disaster relief organizations. It can customize and target resources and deliver them quickly, helping victims almost immediately. For example, during the catastrophic 2009 bushfires in Victoria, Australia—the focal disaster for the book—residents organized an impromptu relief center that collected and distributed urgently needed goods without red tape. Special bonds and friendships formed among the volunteers and victims; some were both volunteer and victim. Many victims were able to mobilize resources despite considerable personal losses. Shepherd and Williams describe the lasting impact of disaster and tell the stories of Victoria residents who organized in the aftermath of the bushfires. They consider the limitations of traditional disaster relief efforts and explain that when victims take action to help others, they develop behavioral, emotional, and assumptive resilience; venturing leads to social interaction, community connections, and other positive outcomes. Finally, they explore spontaneous venturing in a less-developed country, investigating the activities of Haitians after the devastating 2010 earthquake. The lesson for communities hit by disaster: find opportunities for compassionate action.

Book excerpt: The new scientific paradigm based on the primacy of consciousness is here and the question in everybodys mind is how we access quantum consciousness and its causal power. The artist/author Susan Bello gives us a wonderful and powerful method: spontaneous painting. It is really very enjoyable and is a suitable vehicle for all people who are young at heart and like to play. I recommend this method and this book very highly. Amit Goswami, quantum physicist and author of The Self-Aware Universe; God Is Not Dead; and the upcoming Quantum Creativity: Think Quantum, Be Creative This is a truly brilliant and significant book - merits joyful reading and treasuring. Prof. Dr. Ervin Lszl, Founder of Club Budapest; Chancellor-Designate of the newly formed GlobalShift University; author of over 80 books, including The Creative Cosmos: A Unified Science of Matter, Life and Mind. The symbol is a universal resource which nature has bestowed upon us to evolve human consciousness. It embodies energy of pure potentiality that lives in a dormant state in our Unconscious. The process of Spontaneous Painting unleashes this powerful life force within. Each persons unique potential, Authentic and Higher Self, life direction and Innate Authentic Multiple Intelligences flow forth through the brushstroke onto the paper. No artistic training is necessary. Once our symbols are expressed, a transformative process is activated that initiates behavioral change. Our symbols begin to direct us from within. Our Authentic Self is a core energetic configuration that is like no one elses. Each one of us is a unique individual with special gifts, passions and a life purpose. Our Higher Self embodies such states as love, inner wisdom, centeredness, joy and compassion. The key to creating a new paradigm is to develop these constructive expressions of consciousness in each planetary citizen for personal and social transformation. Symbols express in the form of images. Why are images used to transmit this energy? Images are the primal universal language of humankind. The fact that the ability to make images has been with us since the beginning of time suggests it may possess an important survival function of which we are not yet aware. The name The I.am.I TM Method of Spontaneous Painting was chosen to honor our Innate Authentic Multiple Intelligences, hence the acronym I.am.ITM. These intelligences include our: emotional, creative, intuitive, imaginative, symbolic, spiritual, visual and kinesthetic ways of knowing. All of these intelligences are developed during The I.am.I Method. Although we are born with these intelligences and the ability to paint spontaneously, education has focused mainly on the rational intellect and on how to paint the external and not the internal landscape, a vast resource of inner wisdom. Part One of this book is an autobiographical summary of the experiences that led the author to develop The I.am.ITM Method of Spontaneous Painting. The paintings in Part Two document her empirical experimentation with Spontaneous Painting, sourced from the authority of her soul. Part Three is an academic exploration and a theoretical and scholarly documentation of the psychological and quantum states of mind that can be experienced during the Spontaneous Painting Process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides answers to one of the enduring paradoxes of mass social change. From the events of May 1968 to the Arab Spring and Occupy, we have seen social movements develop spontaneously around the globe propelling thousands and, at times, millions of people into the streets to demand an end to oppression. “In order to make sense of such events, the authors draw on George Katsiaficas’s conception of the ‘eros effect,’ which picks up and takes off from concepts developed by Herbert Marcuse. This effect describes moments in which the instinctual human need for justice and freedom undergoes a massive spontaneous awakening. Drawing on Marcuse, the concept foregrounds the instinctual foundation of the desire for freedom, in which a biologically-based pleasure drive—eros—is given free play.” — from the Foreword by Peter Marcuse However, even as the eros effect provides a valuable framework for understanding spontaneous global uprisings, Katsiaficas has acknowledged that the concept has remained underdeveloped. Spontaneous Combustion provides an introduction to the eros effect along with a series of elaborations, applications, and critical rejoinders concerning its implications. A truly interdisciplinary venture, the book features contributions from cutting-edge scholars and activists on the frontlines of today’s struggles.

The phenomenon, which can be categorized as a self-organized process, is observed to occur spontaneously during epitaxial growth of certain ternary alloy semiconductors and results in a modification of their structural, electronic, and optical properties. There has been a great deal of interest in learning how to control this phenomenon so that it may be used for tailoring desirable electronic and optical properties. There has been even greater interest in exploiting the phenomenon for its unique ability to provide an experimental environment of controlled alloy statistical fluctuations. As such, it impacts areas of semiconductor science and technology related to the materials science of epitaxial growth, statistical mechanics, and electronic structure of alloys and electronic and photonic devices. During the past two decades, significant progress has been made toward understanding the mechanisms that drive this phenomenon and the changes in physical properties that result from it. A variety of experimental techniques have been used to probe the phenomenon and several attempts made at providing theoretical models, both for the ordering mechanisms as well as electronic structure changes. The various chapters of this book provide a detailed account of these efforts during the past decade.

Book excerpt: For Hayek, spontaneous order - the emergence of complex order as the unintended consequence of individual actions that have no such end in view - is both the origin of the Great Society and its underlying principle. These sometimes critical essays assess Hayek's position and argue that his work can inform contemporary social and political dilemmas.
