The Holy Spirit is not just about speaking in tongues, spiritual gifts or “fruits”—but also about our deepest breath and our highest human aspirations. Popular teacher Jack Levison brings a scholar’s knowledge of this complicated biblical topic to a wide audience that crosses all denominational boundaries. His new book aims to do nothing less than clarify 2,000 years of confusion on the topic of who the Holy Spirit is, and why it matters. Provocative and life-changing, Fresh Air combines moving personal anecdotes, rich biblical studies, and practical strategies for experiencing the daily presence of the Holy Spirit. In brief chapters, the book finds the presence of the Holy Spirit where we least expect it—in human breathing, in social transformation, in community, in hostile situations, and in serious learning. Fresh Air will unsettle and invigorate readers poised for a fresh experience of an ancient, confusing topic.

It contains poems written over several years. Pastor Cabrera gave me the sermon scriptures each week to write a related poem to print in the bulletin. Many poems came to me in the middle of the night, and I would quickly rise to put them on paper. Only the Holy Spirit could allow me the words to write.

Book excerpt: I went to a Salvation Army dinner with some of the staff of our church and came out knowing something had happened to me spiritually! The next morning, in my devotions, singing “In My Life Lord Be Glorified,” I heard, “I am glorified.” It was the beginning of my poetry. In the first poem He gave me, I realized He had birthed in my heart a ministry of missions. My mission field is wherever the Lord places me. I love sharing Jesus with everyone, but my special love is young people. I’ve been blessed to spend much time with the Lord, sitting at His feet, in worship and praise, which what much of this poetry is about. Many are about sharing Jesus with the lost and the importance of salvation. They show His love and compassion for each and every one of us in different ways. One shows the Lord’s sense of humor, in that it’s about how the Lord defeated the Devil through the Cross at Calvary. Most are prophetic and about winning the lost to Jesus. Remember, as you are reading and being blessed, Jesus loves each and every one of you so much, He shed His blood and died on the cross at Calvary for all of our sins. He’s resurrected, hallelujah, and seated at the right hand of God the Father, interceding for all who have been saved and are His! Praise God!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything that happens, happens for a reason-or, more specifically, everything that happens is an effect of some cause that came before. This is the logical progress of physical existence. New Thought pioneer Thomas Troward, in The Creative Process in the Individual, demonstrates not only how this equation applies to all creation, but how it flows from the divine and relates to the metaphysical, as well as where the individual is placed within this schema. Comprehensively considering the spiritual and mundane aspects of such an existential question, Troward, in this 1915 classic, ultimately exposes how the individual can operate in concert with these laws in order to better his existence and more easily meet his spiritual goal: connecting with God. English judge, philosopher, and painter THOMAS TROWARD (1847-1916) lived most of his life in India, in the service of the imperial monarchy. Among his publications, many of which profoundly affected the New Thought Movement, are The Law and the Word, Bible Mystery and Meaning, and The Hidden Power and Other Papers Upon Mental Science.

Book excerpt: The bestselling author of The Lamb’s Supper continues his thoughtful exploration of the complex relationship between the Bible and the Catholic liturgy in a revelatory work that will appeal to all readers. Scott Hahn has inspired millions of readers with his perceptive and unique view of Catholic theology and worship, becoming one of the most looked-to contemporary authorities in these areas. In Letter and Spirit, Hahn extends the message he began in The Lamb’s Supper, offering far-reaching and profound insights into what the Bible teaches us about living the spiritual life. For both Christians and Jews, the texts of the Bible are not simply records of historical events. They are intended, through public recitations in churches and synagogues, to bring listeners and readers into the sweeping story of redemption as it unfolds in the Bible. Focusing on the Catholic Mass, Hahn describes how God’s Word is meant to open our eyes to the life-giving power of the sacraments, and how the liturgy brings about the “actualization” of the saving truths of Scripture. Letter and Spirit is a stunningly original contribution to the field of biblical studies and will help Hahn’s many loyal and enthusiastic readers understand the relationship between the Bible and the Mass in a deeper way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arising from the context of post-communist Eastern Europe, the present monograph highlights the socio-transformative work of the Holy Spirit while reflecting on the need for a prophetic re-envisioning of historical ends and cultivation of a hopeful political imagination toward building a functional global civil society. Bringing together insights from philosophy, sociology of religion, economics, and political science, the text charts the way toward constructing a theology of social transformation. The argument draws its inspiration from the event of Pentecost as offering a rapturing vision for the cosmopolitan future of the world. This vision highlights the radical hospitality of God towards the other, incarnated in the community of faith via the agency of the Holy Spirit and forecasts the redemption of humanity's multiculturalism transfiguring the global village into the city of God. The text finds its point of departure in examining the ecclesiological significance of Pentecost, establishing the church as a living icon of the Trinitarian communal life on earth. It emphasizes the Christoforming work of the Spirit, translating within the ecclesia the beauty of divine hospitality as distributive justice for the other. The work contrasts the realities of global economic neoliberalism with the communal economics of the Spirit within the household of God, cultivating a eucharistic consciousness of reverent consumption that prioritizes the well-being of the other and transforms the globe into a home for all.
