Book excerpt: Science redefines life and death in this novel by the #1 New York Times–bestselling, Hugo Award–winning author. Dr. Adrian Sommers’s world was destroyed in a split second of distracted driving. The accident left his son wavering between life and death. When the end came, Sommers’s family was torn apart, but the tragedy gave him hope and an obsessive mission: to forestall death through science and technology. Years of experimentation lead Sommers to develop Soulminder, a device capable of capturing a dying person’s life essence and holding it safely in stasis while physicians heal the body from injury or disease. But there are those who recognize Soulminder’s true potential: body-swapping, obstruction of justice, extortion, and perhaps even immortality. As Sommers struggles to retain control over the use of his invention against corrupt and dangerous factions, he must question his own moral judgment and motives in creating Soulminder and determine if humanity has earned the right to harness the power of life and death. From the author of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire, this is not only a tale of a father’s desperate love for his son but also “an intriguing thought experiment. . . . Those who enjoy deep philosophical questions will appreciate being left with much to ponder” (Publishers Weekly).

Book excerpt: Doorway to Illuminations A strange kind of energy was vibrating and whirling through my soul in the early hours of 1 March 2007, raising my normal body frequency. An unusual heat shot up through my body and I was aware of a strange heartbeat. I felt as if I were dying or having a heart attack and I was terrified as no one else was with me. The time was 3 am. Instead of reaching for a glass of water I grabbed a pen and writing pad and sat up in my bed, without consciously exercising my mind. The pen kept writing and scribbling then I started to hear certain words and phrases which I began to repeat out loud. It seemed as if hours and hours had passed and by this time I was so stiff that I could feel pain shooting up my spine. By now I was alert, looking at the piles of paper filled with my scribbling. I was about to collapse so I decided to go and make myself a cup of tea and wash my face. I felt normal again but to my astonishment I discovered that the time was by now 10 am! How on earth had I sat there all those hours without moving! I looked at everything I had written. I couldnt believe it. I had never had any interest at any time in my life in language or poetry, and had never been able to produce fine words or phrases. Yet I had managed to produce an extraordinary poem. My mind was in disbelief. I was so tired and utterly baffled. The next day all my friends and family were shocked at how such a powerful poem had come out of someone like me as I wasnt even born in this country. After a week, another poem came. I was given these two poems for my life story book. I asked whoever was around one night: why and how and who? I remembered that Id had a dream in November 2006 in which my father, who passed away in 2003, told me that a special gift would be given to me and for serving humanity! That was the start of the series of poems which I began writing in March 2007. Up to the present time still more poems have been coming through: I currently have a total of over 40 poems all a gift for humanity. I was instructed to do no more works with individuals but that instead I would need to put my new power and psychic energy to more constructive use for the millions who are in turmoil and in grief and sorrow with all their complications and emotional love traps and more of the dark time which all of us have to go through at some stage of this decaying life. I was also told that it is not my subconscious mind as psychology explains to us: this is a fancy word they use, yet where does that subconscious reside? Call it whatever you like it is not important as its the result which counts: the truth of our evolved spirit within the soul energy which gives us solutions happiness, understanding and unseen intelligence and the iron hand which pulls us out of the black hole of ordinary life with its awesome delusions and earthly domesticated matter It is very important to remember because you are free from every earthly conditioning: you have received a gift. The free spirit is an evolved, illuminated being and progressed mind though not intellectually cultured. That message will be carried with every second I breathe and I shall bring it and give it to all humans who will search one day to discover who they are and why we are born and what the true goal is, but with a free mind and heart. Here are the collection of that gifts of inspiration which I received from the higher being which is far wiser and more intelligent than any human born and any ordinary intellect. Read on and think. We have a collection of poems dictated by the Illuminators (the Emperor of the Soul). You can order it if you want to read them. Many thanks for your time to read the true words of my heart. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science fiction is a literary genre based on scientific speculation. Works of science fiction use the ideas and the vocabulary of all sciences to create valid narratives that explore the future effects of science on events and human beings. Science Fact and Science Fiction examines in one volume how science has propelled science-fiction and, to a lesser extent, how science fiction has influenced the sciences. Although coverage will discuss the science behind the fiction from the Classical Age to the present, focus is naturally on the 19th century to the present, when the Industrial Revolution and spectacular progress in science and technology triggered an influx of science-fiction works speculating on the future. As scientific developments alter expectations for the future, the literature absorbs, uses, and adapts such contextual visions. The goal of the Encyclopedia is not to present a catalog of sciences and their application in literary fiction, but rather to study the ongoing flow and counterflow of influences, including how fictional representations of science affect how we view its practice and disciplines. Although the main focus is on literature, other forms of science fiction, including film and video games, are explored and, because science is an international matter, works from non-English speaking countries are discussed as needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tenth in a series concludes this ground-breaking word-by-word analysis of Finnegans Wake, the literary monument which records James Joyce's desperate search for spiritual connection. In the chapter covered by this volume, the main connecting links are reincarnation of ALP and reincarnation of the novel itself. For his last weave, Tikkun Master Joyce joins strands of Kabbalah and Hinduism to launch a fully realized ALP. She comes to roost but in a new home on the far shore. ALP realizes independence as she throws off fear of the church, of males, and of death. The pivotal event for this purpose is closure provided by the funeral for Father Michael, ALP's sexmailer. The resulting freedom gives her independence as well as what she already had, her instinctive charitable nature. Given the unity of FW, it will come as no surprise that with this final development ALP shares soul with three of Joyce's examples of godliness: Jesus, Buddha and highest art produced by humans. They all share the weave of independence and charity, Joyce's conditions for the sacred. And these conditions turn on light within. This chapter opens with the arrival of morning light within the Earwicker household and is anchored by a culminating debate between a dogmatic Catholic and a meditating Celt about reflected versus absorbed color [think absorbed light as light within]. Joyce chose light for this purpose because in a manner of speaking light is also a mixture of independence and charity. Independent of the observer and time and space, light shows charity at the subatomic level. Light being absorbed shares vibrational energy with and thus energizes sympathetic electrons of the absorbing material, becoming light within. By contrast, light reflected is not absorbed and does not energize. Energy wise it is wasted. Joyce presents ALP as having absorbed divine energy. She lights up from within with independent voltage. Reflecting her new realization, the final subject in ALP's stream of consciousness is herself in the present in the stream of life. With this focus ALP merges into the novel and they both reincarnate back to the beginning. The novel reincarnates by way of the joinder of the incomplete sentence fragment in the last line with the incomplete sentence fragment in the first line of Chapter 1. Together they make a whole. ALP's spirit reincarnates to a new birth mother so as to assist in Tikkun, which so far is incomplete. Her reincarnated soul is to light up from within as it is absorbed by a newly born infant. So as we finish this reading of FW, we uncover a mother lode of connections in Joyce's light: ALP merges into FW; ALP's soul reincarnates into another; the book joins its ending with its beginning in a reincarnation of rereading and new meanings; and a punning connection from Kabbala holds it all together. Connections: connections: connections.

At twenty-two, hotshot Matthew Raimey has his whole life ahead of him, but a tragic accident quickly changes everything. He’s left feeling hopeless—until he receives a proposition to be part of a new project for SkyLight International: Project Changeling. It’s not the easiest transition, but eventually Matt is spending his days unlike anyone back on Earth could imagine—swimming through the toxic yet beautiful atmosphere of Jupiter, in the body of a Qanska, an enormous alien resembling a cross between a manta ray and a dolphin. Even stranger, Matt is happy again. But his second chance at survival doesn’t come without a cost. Behind this project is a mysterious oligarchy of rich and powerful individuals who run the solar system, and they didn’t place Matt on Jupiter out of mere kindness. They’re monitoring his every move, and preparing to collect what they came for . . . “The direction Manta’s Gift ultimately takes is inventive and unexpected. . . . Zahn plays out his suspense as deftly as always, building a tense situation and ultimately defusing it in believable and pleasing ways.” —Locus “Zahn is ingenious in his plotting and well versed in keeping things moving. Manta’s Gift leaves the reader feeling very satisfied.” —Analog Science Fiction and Fact “The author of Angelmass brings a new twist to a classic tale of human-alien encounter, combining fast-paced action and hard science with personal drama. Book excerpt: A “brisk and entertaining” novel of a barren, mysterious planet that may save humanity—or destroy it—by the author of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire (Publishers Weekly). Chasing a new frontier, humankind sends a manned starship into the universe and away from the overpopulated Earth in hopes of finding a new planet to colonize. But every Earthlike world they discover is already inhabited. As it turns out, the universe is a very crowded place. An alien council offers to lease the one remaining uninhabited world: Astra, a bleak and barren but serviceable planet. The new settlement, though, quickly experiences serious problems, from dying crops to the mysterious disappearance of anything and everything that is made of metal. And then Astra reveals a secret neither the aliens nor the human governments could ever have imagined.
