Book Synopsis History as a Science: The Philosophy of R.G. Collingwood by : Jan van der Dussen
Download or read book History as a Science: The Philosophy of R.G. Collingwood written by Jan van der Dussen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1981-10-31 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. 1. COLLINGWOOD'S RECEPTION Collingwood's scholarly reputation is a complicated and variegated affair. For one has not only to make a' distinction between his reputation during his life and after his premature death in 1943, but also between his reputation as a philosopher and as an archaeologist and historian. Collingwood himself considered philosophy as his primary occupation and his work in archaeology and history as that of an amateur. This work, however, reached the highest standards and his contributions to archaeology and history have always been appreciated accordingly. Though Collingwood's reputation as the main expert on Roman Britain in the period between the two wars remains unchallenged, modern developments in this field have inevitably superseded his contributions and made them primarily voices from a past period. Philosophy was the other half of Collingwood's scholarly life. In his own thinking there was always a close relationship between philosophy and archaeological and histor ical practice. His interpreters have not always recognized this connection. I have met archaeologists who were surprised to hear that Collingwood was a philosopher as well, who either did not know that he had been a practising and philosophers archaeologist and historian, or thought it no more than a private hobby. Collingwood's reputation as a philosopher was very different from the one he gained in archaeology and history. For in the philosophical climate at Oxford between the wars he was always an isolated figure.

Download or read book Continuing in Christ’S Teaching written by Moffat D. Ngalande and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My increasing desire is to see Christians that have a holistic view of the Christian faith, being fi rmly grounded in the truths of Gods Word. Continuing in Christs Teaching takes you on a journey in which the fundamental Christian doctrines are explored so that we may grasp them and not only grasp them, but also apply and continue in them in practical day to day living. -Moff at Ngalande. Many of the books and papers in almost all fi elds of study are normally written by so-called giants and heavyweights in their fi eld. Yet many times, because of this very fact, much of what is written tends to be very intellectual. It seems to be out of touch with the normal day to day hassles of life that the average human being has to face. Many of the other books written by lightweights in the fi eld seem to lack orderliness and the depth of thought that is required. Yet in this book Continuing in Christs teaching, Moff at works out a unique combination of the best of both worlds. I thus proudly recommend this book to Christians of all denominations. -Reverend Reynold Mmangisa - Church of Central Africa Presbyterian A very good and well researched eff ort. Th e fact that this is done by a young lay and professional person should be both encouraging and challenging. Encouraging because its a very good sign in the midst of the (diff erent) extremes in teachings and doctrines. Challenging because it shows that there is a quiet which must be recognized and addressed -Pastor Jeremiah Chikhwaza - Bible Faith Ministries Th is is an excellent work which elaborates the biblical doctrines herein discussed. Many readers, both growing and mature Christians would fi nd this book both informative and helpful in attaining a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of the Christian faith. -Bishop Geoff rey Matoga -Faith of God Ministries International.
