Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development in plasma physics has recently been quite rapid and it is difficult to keep up with the evolution in all areas at the same time. Thus a review of the present state of plasma physics in different areas can be very useful although it is, of course, difficult to make it complete. In the present review we include basic plasma physics, laboratory and space plasmas, fusion plasmas, industrial plasmas and cosmology. Among these there are several contributions on fusion plasmas, including also a general overview of the state of nuclear fusion research. Natural starting points when discussing plasma physics are the facts that plasma is the fourth state of matter and that over 99% of the universe is in the plasma state. With this background it is somewhat surprising that plasmas are very scarce on earth and appear in natural state only in lightenings and, of course, at a distance from the earth as the ionosphere. The main application of plasma physics on earth is for the purpose of energy production but new areas like plasma processing and semiconductor plasmas are increasing in importance. The ionosphere is also of a practical importance for space crafts. In order to have a framework for understanding all these different areas of applications we need basic plasma physics including theory. A new way of understanding plasmas, which has become increasingly useful with the development of powerful computers is by kinetic simulation. Large kinetic simulations can be seen as small scale experiments with very good diagnostic possibilities. Nevertheless the understanding of large scale simulations requires advanced knowledge in statistical physics. For simulations on the transport timescale in tokamaks we still have to resort to fluid models. This makes questions of the fluid closure important. Here we have a cross diciplinary interest with Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics (EIT) used for small nanoscale systems in semiconductors. For such systems an entropy principle has been used for obtaining a fluid closure. A problem with this, for fusion plasmas, is that the entropy principle is valid only for isolated systems. This focuses the interest on the effect of external sources. External sources may, of course be of significant interest for many types of system. Philosophical aspects of external sources enter in cosmology where such sources would alter Hubble s law for the expansion of the universe. A last aspect of plasmas, also connected to the previous discussion of kinetic and fluid modes is the individual particle picture in contrast to the collective motion picture. Of course individual particle orbits are fundamental to plasma physics and to confinement in fusion systems. Nevertheless it is usually the collective aspects of many such individual orbits which dominate the dynamics in magnetic confinement. It is easy to get an intuitive feeling for collective plasma motion by looking at the discharge in a vacuum tube. It is also natural to associate the collective motion with the fluid picture. Thus in a kinetic description of collective phenomena we may think of the dynamics in terms of fluidlike bulk motion together with individual particles which are in some kind of resonance with the bulk motion. We here speak about particles which are not localized with respect to the bulk structures. An interesting, but not surprising, point is that localisation of particles in the fluid sense and in the overall confinement sense is typically provided by the same physics processes. Book excerpt: As part of its current physics decadal survey, Physics 2010, the NRC was asked by the DOE, NSF, and NASA to carry out an assessment of and outlook for the broad field of plasma science and engineering over the next several years. The study was to focus on progress in plasma research, identify the most compelling new scientific opportunities, evaluate prospects for broader application of plasmas, and offer guidance to realize these opportunities. The study paid particular attention to these last two points. This "demand-side" perspective provided a clear look at what plasma research can do to help achieve national goals of fusion energy, economic competitiveness, and nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship. The report provides an examination of the broad themes that frame plasma research: low-temperature plasma science and engineering; plasma physics at high energy density; plasma science of magnetic fusion; space and astrophysical science; and basic plasma science. Within those themes, the report offers a bold vision for future developments in plasma science.

Book excerpt: This complete introduction to plasma physics and controlled fusion by one of the pioneering scientists in this expanding field offers both a simple and intuitive discussion of the basic concepts of this subject and an insight into the challenging problems of current research. In a wholly lucid manner the work covers single-particle motions, fluid equations for plasmas, wave motions, diffusion and resistivity, Landau damping, plasma instabilities and nonlinear problems. For students, this outstanding text offers a painless introduction to this important field; for teachers, a large collection of problems; and for researchers, a concise review of the fundamentals as well as original treatments of a number of topics never before explained so clearly. This revised edition contains new material on kinetic effects, including Bernstein waves and the plasma dispersion function, and on nonlinear wave equations and solitons. For the third edition, updates was made throughout each existing chapter, and two new chapters were added; Ch 9 on “Special Plasmas” and Ch 10 on Plasma Applications (including Atmospheric Plasmas).

Book excerpt: A Nobel Foundation Symposium on the subject: "Nonlinear Effects 1n Plasmas", was held at Aspenasgarden, Lerum, in the G6teborg area of Sweden from June 11-17, 1976. The Symposium was the 36th in the series of Nobel Foundation Symposia, which have been held mainly within the areas of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace prizes. Some 30 leading experts from the United States, Soviet Union, Japan and Western Europe attended the Symposium. The purpose of the Symposium was to discuss various topics in the field of modern plasma physics. We had to select from this vast area of active research a suitable common theme with a great number of new and interesting contributions. We decided to devote our Sym posium in particular to nonlinear effects in plasmas and to emphasize some areas where important developments seemed to be taking place. In recent years basic theory and experiments in nonlinear plasma physics have been stimulated largely by the need for an energy source based on fusion of light nuclei. In many laboratories all over the world attempts are being made to come closer to the final goal by studying magnetically confined plasmas and systems of inertial con finement. Heating of plasmas to fusion temperatures remains a key problem. There are good reasons to believe that the nonlinear effects in plasmas will play an important role for fusion, a long-range program which is still largely in its basic research phase.

Book excerpt: There has been an increase in interest worldwide in fusion research over the last decade and a half due to the recognition that a large number of new, environmentally attractive, sustainable energy sources will be needed to meet ever increasing demand for electrical energy. Based on a series of course notes from graduate courses in plasma physics and fusion energy at MIT, the text begins with an overview of world energy needs, current methods of energy generation, and the potential role that fusion may play in the future. It covers energy issues such as the production of fusion power, power balance, the design of a simple fusion reactor and the basic plasma physics issues faced by the developers of fusion power. This book is suitable for graduate students and researchers working in applied physics and nuclear engineering. A large number of problems accumulated over two decades of teaching are included to aid understanding.
