Download or read book Marine Radioactivity written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-09-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on Marine Radioactivity sets out to cover most of the aspects of marine radioactivity which have been the focus of scientific study in recent decades. The authors and their reviews divide into topic areas which have defined the field over its history. They cover the suite of natural radioisotopes which have been present in the oceans since their formation and quantitatively dominate the inventory of radioactivity in the oceans. Also addressed are the suite of artificial radionuclides introduced to the oceans as a consequence of the use of the atom for development of nuclear energy, nuclear weapons and various applications of nuclear science. The major source of these continues to derive from the global fallout of atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons in the 1950s and 1960s but also includes both planned and accidental releases of radioactivity from both civilian and military nuclear technology. The other division of the major study direction depends on whether the objective is to use the radionuclides as powerful tools to study oceanic processes, to describe and understand the ocean distribution of the various natural or artificial radionuclides or to assess the different radionuclides' impact on and pathways to man or marine organisms. The oceans cover 70% of the Earth's surface and thus contains a corresponding large share of the Earth's radioactivity. Marine Radioactivity covers topics of recent scientific study in this young field. It examines both natural radioactivity (radioactivity naturally present in oceans since their formation) and artificial radioactivity (radioactivity introduced by man and use of atomic and nuclear energy) with regard to possible effects on the global environment.

Book Synopsis Modelling Radioactivity in the Environment by : E.M. Scott
Download or read book Modelling Radioactivity in the Environment written by E.M. Scott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-05-22 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as an environmental model typically will be composed of a number of linked sub-models, representing physical, chemical or biological processes understood to varying degrees, this volume includes a series of linked chapters exemplifying the fundamental nature of environmental radioactivity models in all compartments of the environment. Why is a book on modelling environmental radioactivity necessary? There are many reasons why such a boook is necessary, perhaps the most important that: - modelling is an often misunderstood and maligned activity and this book can provide, to a broad audience, a greater understanding of modelling power but also some of the limitations. - modellers and experimentalists often do not understand and mistrust each other's work yet they are mutually dependent, in the sense that good experimental science can direct good modelling work and vice-versa; we hope that this book can dispel mistrust and engender improved understanding. - there is an increasing reliance on model results in environmental management, yet there is also often misuse and misrepresentation of these results. This book can help to bridge the gap between unrealistic expectations of model power and the realisation of what is possible, practicable and feasible in modelling of environmental radioactivity; and finally, - modelling tools, capacity and power have increased many-fold in a relatively short period of time. Much of this is due to the much-heralded computer revolution, but much is also due to better science. It is useful to consider what gap if any still remains between what is possible and what is necessary.

Book Synopsis Impact of Climate Changes on Marine Environments by : Tymon Zielinski
Download or read book Impact of Climate Changes on Marine Environments written by Tymon Zielinski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the current discussion on global environmental changes by discussing modifications in marine ecosystems related to global climate changes. In marine ecosystems, rising atmospheric CO2 and climate changes are associated with shifts in temperature, circulation, stratification, nutrient input, oxygen concentration and ocean acidification, which have significant biological effects on a regional and global scale. Knowing how these changes affect the distribution and abundance of plankton in the ocean currents is crucial to our understanding of how climate change impacts the marine environment. Ocean temperatures, weather and climatic changes greatly influence the amount and location of nutrients in the water column. If temperatures and currents change, the plankton production cycle may not coincide with the reproduction cycle of fish. The above changes are closely related to the changes in radiative forcing, which initiate feedback mechanisms like changes in surface temperature, circulation, and atmospheric chemistry.
Book Synopsis Marine Radioecology, Volume 6 by : Jean-Claude Amiard
Download or read book Marine Radioecology, Volume 6 written by Jean-Claude Amiard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marine environment, in addition to a not insignificant background of “natural” radioactivity, has continued to receive inputs of radionuclides directly or indirectly through atomic fallout, discharges from the nuclear industry or from nuclear accidents. After their introduction, the fate of these radionuclides is complex with modifications of physicochemical forms, dispersion in marine water masses and adsorption onto sedimentary particles. Marine organisms then bioaccumulate these radionuclides to a greater or lesser extent, dispersing them via their burrowing activities, horizontal and vertical migrations or through food webs. All of these phenomena lead to very variable radioactive contamination, depending on location and the nature of the marine environments concerned, and consequently, to very different doses of irradiation to marine organisms. The harmful effects of ionizing radiation on living marine organisms are felt at varying levels of biological organization from the molecule to the ecosystem, passing through the cell, the organ, the individual and the population. In the end, the radioactive risk for marine organisms can decline according to several situations, which can be normal, programmed or accidental.
Book Synopsis Modelling of the Radiological Impact of Radioactive Waste Dumping in the Arctic Seas by : International Arctic Seas Assessment Project
Download or read book Modelling of the Radiological Impact of Radioactive Waste Dumping in the Arctic Seas written by International Arctic Seas Assessment Project and published by . This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Arctic Seas Assessment Project ( ASAP) was launched by the IAEA in 1993 in response to widespread concern arising from reports that the former Soviet Union had dumped radioactive waste in the Arctic Seas for more than thirty years. The objectives of IASAP were to assess the risk to human health and to the environment associated with the radioactive waste disposed of in the Kara and Barents Seas, and to examine the possible remedial actions related to the dumped waste and to advise on whether they are necessary and justified. Within the framework of IASAP, the Modelling and Dose Assessment Working Group was established to develop a predictive model for the dispersal of radioactive contaminants both within and from the Arctic Ocean and to evaluate the contributions of dominating transfer mechanisms to the dispersal and hence the risks to human health and the environment it. This report (IAEA-TECDOC-1330) summarizes the work undertaken by the Modelling and Dose Assessment Working Group between 1994 and 1996.
Book Synopsis The General Genetic Catastrophe by : Nils K. Oeijord
Download or read book The General Genetic Catastrophe written by Nils K. Oeijord and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nils K. Oeijords research since 1999 shows that we have a worldwide general genetic catastrophe (GGC) due to general local and global manmade mutagenic pollution. The GGC began in the 1700s, increased in the 1800s, and exploded in the 1900s. The HIGH and INCREASING prevalence and the HIGH and INCREASING incidence of gene damage and genetic diseases all over the world logically prove the existence of the GGC. Nils K. Oeijord is a science writer, a former researcher (plant production), a former assistant professor (mathematics), and a former science and mathematics lecturer (high school). He is the discoverer of the general genetic catastrophe, and has earned a place in Whos Who in the World (28th Edition), in Great Minds of the 21st Century (5th Edition), and in 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century (2011 Edition).
