Book excerpt: This resource covers basic concepts and modeling examples for the three “pillars” of EW: Electronic Attack (EA) systems, Electronic Protection (EP) techniques, and Electronic Support (ES). It develops techniques for the modeling and simulation (M&S) of modern radar and electronic warfare (EW) systems and reviews radar principles, including the radar equation. M&S techniques are introduced, and example models developed in MATLAB and Simulink are presented and discussed in detail. These individual models are combined to create a full end-to-end engineering engagement simulation between a pulse-Doppler radar and a target. The radar-target engagement model is extended to include jamming models and is used to illustrate the interaction between radar and jamming signals and the impact on radar detection and tracking. In addition, several classic EA techniques are introduced and modeled, and the effects on radar performance are explored. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, and managers who are involved in the design, development, or testing of radar and EW systems. It provides a comprehensive overview of the M&S techniques that are used in these systems, and the book's many examples and case studies provide a solid foundation for understanding how these techniques can be applied in practice.

But software and the ability to use it does not guarantee success. One must also: Ö Understand radar operations and design philosophy Ö Know how to select the radar parameters to meet the design requirements Ö Be able to perform detailed trade-off analysis in the context of radar sizing, modes of operation, frequency selection, waveforms, and signal processing Ö Develop loss and error budgets associated with the design MATLAB Simulations for Radar Systems Design teaches all of this and provides the M-files and hands-on simulation experience needed to design and analyze radar systems. Part I forms a comprehensive description of radar systems, their analysis, and the design process. The authors' unique approach involves a design case study introduced in Chapter 1 and followed throughout the text. As the treatment progresses, the complexity increases and the case study requirements are adjusted accordingly. Part II presents a series of chapters-some authored by other experts in the field-on specialized radar topics important to a full understanding of radar systems design and analysis. A comprehensive set of MATLAB programs and functions support both parts of the book and are available for download from the CRC Press Web site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Doppler Effect can be thought of as the change in frequency of a wave for an observer moving relative to the source of the wave. In radar, it is used to measure the velocity of detected objects. This highly practical resource provides thorough working knowledge of the micro-Doppler effect in radar, including its principles, applications and implementation with MATLAB codes. The book presents code for simulating radar backscattering from targets with various motions, generating micro-Doppler signatures, and analyzing the characteristics of targets. In this title, professionals will find detailed descriptions of the physics and mathematics of the Doppler and micro-Doppler effect. The book provides a wide range of clear examples, including an oscillating pendulum, a spinning and precession heavy top, rotating rotor blades of a helicopter, rotating wind-turbine blades, a person walking with swinging arms and legs, a flying bird, and movements of quadruped animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation of radar performance using an actual radar is extremely costly. Such a process usually provides only samples of data under limited and difficult-to-control scenarios. In contrast, computer simulation using a validated model of the radar system provides flexible and cost effective means of testing various aspects of the system. This research represents an initial attempt to construct function-by-function validated models of radar systems for performance assessment and to produce simulation software which can accept environment data and threat scenarios and drive the radar models. Several desirable aspects of radar operations have not been included in this work but should be considered for future implementation. They are: multiple PRF capability and range-Doppler ambiguity resolution; ECCM features such as carrier frequency agility and sidelobe cancellation; and clutter map for enhanced zero velocity target detection. In this thesis, the software model of a generic search radar operating at a medium pulse repetition frequency (PRF) with Doppler filtering capability is created. A simulation program is written which takes this radar model, combines it with user defined trajectories and cross sections of targets and jammers to produce echo signals, and displays the radar output on a plane-position indicator (PPI) and separately on a range-Doppler plane.

Book excerpt: Although microwave mixers play a critical role in wireless communication and other microwave applications employing frequency conversion circuits, engineers find that most books on this subject emphasize theoretical aspects, rather than practical applications. That’s about to change with the forthcoming release of Microwave Mixer Technology and Applications. Based on a review of over one thousand patents on mixers and frequency conversion, authors Bert Henderson and Edmar Camargo have written a comprehensive book for mixer designers who want solid ideas for solving their own design challenges. Many of the important and most interesting patents and related circuits are discussed in the several application oriented chapters. In addition, important contributions from the technical literature are included to provide a solid theoretical foundation. This book contains both introductory and advanced material about active and passive mixers that use bipolar transistor, FET, or diode switching devices. Theory and design details are presented for dozens of important mixer designs, with practical application information derived from the authors’ decades of experience.

The video eBook uses constructive examples and real-world collected datasets to demonstrate image registration and autofocus methods. Both two- and three-dimensional image formation algorithms are presented. Hardware, software, and environmental parameters are used to estimate performance limits for SAR operation and utilization. A set of Python and MATLAB software tools is included and provides you with an effective mechanism to analyze and predict SAR performance for various imaging scenarios and applications. Examples which use the software tools are provided at the end of each chapter to reinforce critical SAR imaging topics such as clutter-to-noise ratio, mapping rate, spatial resolution, Doppler bandwidth, pulse repetition frequency, and coherency. This is an excellent resource for engineering professionals working in areas of radar signal processing and imaging as well as students interested in studying SAR.
