Book excerpt: Nonlinear frequency conversion in waveguides has been investigated since the first days of integrated optics, but practical applications were hampered by a lack of suitable pump lasers and the often inconvenient phase-matching characteristics of the available waveguides. Recent developments in high power (> 100 mW) single-mode diode lasers and quasi-phase-matching techniques have led to renewed interest in waveguide frequency conversion. Periodic modulation of the optical properties of a nonlinear medium, quasi-phase-matching, is an attractive technique as it decouples phase-matching from birefringence and thus allows any interaction within the transparency range of the medium using any component of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor. The most efficient form of quasi-phase-matching involves periodic reversal of the sign of the nonlinear susceptibility (Chi(2)) of the medium, with a period equal to an odd multiple of the coherence length of the interaction. In ferroelectrics, such a periodic sign reversal in Chi(2) can be accomplished by periodic reversals in the orientation of the spontaneous polarization. Periodic incorporation of dopants has been found to induce domain reversal in several ferroelectrics, e.g. Ti or Li in LiNbO3, H in LiTaO3, and Rb and Ba in KTP, leading to rapid progress in device demonstrations in these material systems. Several milliwatts of blue light generated by quasi-phase-matched (QPM) frequency doubling have been demonstrated in LiNbO3, KTP, and LiTaO3 waveguides, as has QPM difference frequency generation of 2.1 microns radiation in LiNbO3 waveguides.

Book excerpt: Single-pass frequency doubling of near-infrared (NIR) diode lasers in nonlinear bulk crystals allows to realize compact lasers in the green spectral region, offering continuous-wave (CW) laser radiation characterized by a high spectral brightness. In order to increase the efficiency of such laser systems, the application of quasi phase-matched waveguide structures instead of bulk crystals is investigated theoretically and experimentally. In particular, a complemented study of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate (MgO:LN) ridge and planar waveguides is conducted. This study aims at identifying benefits and limitations for both geometries with respect to maximum conversion efficiency and accessible power. The application of waveguide structures presented in this thesis results in a distinct improvement of the opto-optical conversion efficiency – from approximately 20 % in a bulk crystal to almost 30 % in a planar waveguide, and to around 40 % in a ridge waveguide. A maximum second-harmonic power of nearly 0.4 W in a ridge waveguide and 1.2 W in planar waveguide is reached. The generated laser radiation in the green spectral range is characterized by a single-frequency spectrum and nearly diffrac-tion-limited beam quality and thus ideally suited for applications in bio-medicine, bio-technology, and spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines second-order optical nonlinear wave mixing processes in domain-disordered quasi-phase matching waveguides and evaluates their potential use in compact, monolithically integrated wavelength conversion devices. The devices are based on a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice-core waveguide structure with an improved design over previous generations. Quantum-well intermixing by ion-implantation is used to create the quasi-phase matching gratings in which the nonlinear susceptibility is periodically suppressed.Difference frequency generation was demonstrated with wavelengths from the optical C-band being converted to the L- and U-bands with continuous waves. Conversion for Type-I phase matching was demonstrated over 20 nm with signal and idler wavelengths being separated by over 100 nm. Type-II phase matched conversion was also observed. Using the experimental data for analysis, self-pumped conversion devices were found to require external amplification to reach practical output powers. Threshold pump powers for optical parametric oscillators were calculated to be impractically large. Proposed improvements to the device design are predicted to allow more practical operation of integrated conversion devices based on quasi-phase matching superlattice waveguides.Photoluminescence experiments showed a large band gap energy blue shift around 70 nm after intermixing. Measured two-photon absorption coefficients showed a significant polarization dependence and suppression of up to 80% after intermixing. Similar polarization dependencies and suppression were observed in three-photon absorption and nonlinear refraction. Advanced modeling of second-harmonic generation showed reductions of over 50% in efficiency due to linear losses alone. Self-phase modulation was found to be the dominant parasitic nonlinear effect on the conversion efficiency, with reductions of over 60%. Simulations of group velocity mismatch showed modest reductions in efficiency of less than 10%.Experiments on second-harmonic generation showed improvements in efficiency over previous generations due to low linear loss and improved intermixing. The improvements permitted demonstration of continuous wave second-harmonic generation for the first time in such structures with output power exceeding 1 muW. Also, Type-II phase matching was demonstrated for the first time. Saturation was observed as the power was increased, which, as predicted, was the result of self-phase modulation when using 2 ps pulses. By using 20 ps pulses instead, saturation effects were avoided. Thermo-optically induced bistability was observed in continuous wave experiments.

For example, solitons based on second-order nonlinearities have been observed in photorefractive materials and frequency doubling crystals, destroying the perception that third order nonlinearities are - quired for their generation and propagation. New ways of creating and manipulating nonl- ear optical materials have been developed. An example is the creation of highly nonlinear (second-order active) polymers by static electric field, photo-assisted or all-optical poling.
