Br.In seinen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten hat er immer wieder die Frage nach den Ursprüngen des römischen Privatrechts behandelt; Untersuchungen über die archaischen Rituale der Diebstahlsverfolgung und der Herausgabeklage des Eigentümers, über die Streitbefestigung und über die Freilassung von Sklaven haben Grundsätzliches geklärt. Bald nach der Erstpublikation des neuen pompejanischen Urkundenfundes von 1959 erkannte J. G. Wolf als erster, daß unzureichende Lesungen der Urkunden unser Bild von der römischen Rechtswirklichkeit zu verfälschen drohten; seinen Arbeiten ist es zu verdanken, daß die Forschung über diese Urkunden zu einer eigenen Disziplin in der Wissenschaft vom römischen Recht geworden ist und erstaunliche Ergebnisse hervorgebracht hat. Daneben stehen Untersuchungen über die Rechtspolitik der römischen Kaiser, über den klassischen Zivilprozeß und über vieles andere.Seine Schüler leitete er vor allem an, die Werke der klassischen Jurisprudenz zu analysieren und ihre juristisch-literarische Individualität festzustellen. Die Gesamtheit der Arbeiten über Juristen von Labeo bis Paulus - die meisten sind in der von J. G. Wolf wieder ins Leben gerufenen Reihe der »Freiburger Rechtsgeschichtlichen Abhandlungen« erschienen - hat J. G. Book excerpt: This is the English version of Jerzy Wroblewski's major work in Polish, S~dowe Stosowania Prawa (translated in his own preferred terms as 'The Judicial Application of Law'). The present translation arose out of a visit by the author to Scotland in 1989. In that year, the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland made it possible for Jerzy Wroblewski to spend six months as a Carnegie Fellow in the Centre for Criminology and the Social and Philosophical Study of Law at the University of Edinburgh. During that time he took a notably active part in the intellectual life of the Centre and the Faculty of Law. He gave freely of his time in teaching and advising students and also produced a series of original articles on topics connected with legal reasoning and law and computers. His major task while he was here, however, was to prepare a translation of S~dowe Stosowania Prawa, and this he accomplished to the extent of completing a preliminary draft. Zenon Bankowski and Neil MacCormick were to help him in improving this linguistically and preparing the final text for publication. Wroblewski warned us, having finished his draft with great labour, that the greater labour would be in the polishing of it. For we would have, as he joked, 'to translate my English into English'. And certainly, we found it extremely time-consuming, so as to defy completion during his stay in Edinburgh.

It is only within the past few decades that the full complexity of declamation, and the promise inherent in its study, have come to be recognized. This volume, which contains thirteen essays from an international team of scholars, engages with the multidisciplinary nature of declamation, focusing in particular on the various interactions in declamation between rhetoric, literature, law, and ethics. Contributions pursue a range of topics, but also complement each other. Separate essays by Brescia, Lentano, and Lupi explore social roles—their tensions and expectations—as defined through declamation. With similar emphasis on historical circumstances, Quiroga Puertas and Tomassi consider the adaptation of rhetorical material to frame contemporary realities. Schwartz draws attention to the sometimes hazy borderline between declamation and the courtroom. The relationship between laws and declamation, a topic of abiding importance, is examined in studies by Berti, Breij, and Johansson. Also with an eye to the complex interaction between laws and declamation, Pasetti offers a narratological analysis of cases of poisoning. Citti discovers the concept of natural law represented in declamatory material.
