In May, 1994 the second international potato modelling conference was held in Wageningen, the Netherlands, as a summerschool of the C. T. de Wit Graduate School. The conference was sponsored by DLO, SCRI, SSCR, W AU and the LEB-Fund. Over 80 scientists participated, coming from 16 countries. Of each crop physiological and modelling subject, a leading scientist was requested to write a review of the most recent developments in his or her field. The reviews, with highlights from the authors' own work, are such that the physiological work described is of interest to the modeller and the modelling work to the crop physiologist. Applications of the quantitative approach are also reviewed in the concluding chapters that deal with decision support systems, breeding and agro-ecological zoning. An outstanding point of this book is that both the crop ecology and the modelling of a broad range of biotic and abiotic factors are treated by scientists representing groups which are specialized in the subject. The two related disciplines met during the conference and thus wrote the chapters with each other's interest in mind. However, at that time this group of nematode, with about 12 species, was considered tobe largely temperate in distribu tion. Now a total of 105 species (including those that are considered as synonyms or species inquirende by some or all) within six genera of cyst nematodes have been described from temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions and at least five species are important constraints to crop produc tion in tropical agriculture. The previous impression of localization of cyst nematodes in the temperate region was seemingly an artifact due to a greater concentration of nematologists in the temperate regions. Based on my own experience of working in several Asian and African countries, I believe that many more undescribed species are present in the tropical countries of Asia and Africa, and probably in other tropical regions. Most growers, extension workers, and research managers in these regions are still not aware of the possible harm of presence of these nematodes in their agricultural soils. The cyst nematodes are perhaps smaller than the smallest available computer chip but they are very well programmed to survive and pro pagate despite severe hardships. These nematodes are very selective in their choice of food; about 50% of known species are parasites of plants mainly in the families Poaceae and Fabaceae.

Book excerpt: The European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has identified acrylamide as a public health concern due to its relation with the appearance of different types of cancer, and continued efforts are required to reduce exposure to acrylamide (EFSA, 2015). During the last few years, EFSA has maintained a high level of supervision to monitor the acrylamide levels in processed products, urging companies to implement effective mitigation strategies for reducing formation of this contaminant. Recently, the European Commission has published a regulation that sets mitigation measures for the reduction of this compound in foods, identifying new benchmark levels for a number of food categories (European Commission, 2017). The Regulation 2158/2017 compels food processors and food business operators in Europe to reduce the presence of acrylamide in their products, applying measures proportionate to the size and nature of the establishments. With the goal of providing information that contributes to our understanding for this process contaminant and exposure through dietary routes, this Special Issue explores the recent advances on the study of acrylamide in foods, including novel insights into the chemistry of its formation and elimination, effective mitigation strategies, conventional and innovative monitoring techniques, risk/benefit approaches, and exposure assessment.
