Book excerpt: In the Land of Ox, Clayton Thomas Moore is a righteous follower of Christ, but he is also a student of evolutionary biology. Moore has found a way to mix science and Christianity—and in the process, bring enlightenment to both sides of the spectrum. However, in the Land of Ox, there is a strong divide between science and religion. Because of this divide, Moore is brought up on charges. Moore must appear before the Oxian Supreme Court and answer for his actions. He is guilty of unsettling the faith-science split, threatening the cultural equilibrium in the Land of Ox. As Moore prepares to defend his case before the Oxian Supreme Court justices, though, it becomes apparent that the Supreme Court justices are deeply divided along lines of religious belief. Oxbowl Incident is a religious courtroom drama that argues for the validity of science and religion. Although the case of Moore vs. Oxbowl is fictitious, the farce is not far from the truth, as modern society wrestles with similar quandaries. Will the Oxian Supreme Court hand down punishment upon Clayton Thomas Moore? Or will the varied beliefs of the Oxian justices leaveMoore to be the last man standing in this battle of Christian faith?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in 1885, The Ox-Bow Incident is a searing and realistic portrait of frontier life and mob violence in the American West. First published in 1940, it focuses on the lynching of three innocent men and the tragedy that ensues when law and order are abandoned. The result is an emotionally powerful, vivid, and unforgettable re-creation of the Western novel, which Clark transmuted into a universal story about good and evil, individual and community, justice and human nature. As Wallace Stegner writes, [Clark's] theme was civilization, and he recorded, indelibly, its first steps in a new country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Know thyself One of the biggest and most glaring pitfalls new investors face is not knowing their own money mentality, especially when it comes to risk. They don’t have enough experience to know their comfort level, and so they make mistakes like buying aggressively at the top, selling in desperation at the bottom, and—the cardinal sin—leveraging funds that should be set aside for long-term peace of mind. Things don’t have to play out this way. Investors can do better. One of the biggest steps in the right direction is taking time to make an honest assessment of your risk tolerance. Chances are, it’s a more complicated issue than it seems on the face of things. In Your Money Mentality, Ted Oakley explores common investor profiles, types of risk, considerations in your self-assessment, and what steps you can take to ensure the guidance you’re receiving matches your priorities. Risk tolerance is at the heart of most money decisions, and learning to know yourself will make you a better investor and a better partner for the people you trust to give you financial guidance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constructed in 1297?1300 for King Edward I, the Coronation Chair ranks amongst the most remarkable and precious treasures to have survived from the Middle Ages. It incorporated in its seat a block of sandstone, which the king seized at Scone, following his victory over the Scots in 1296. For centuries, Scottish kings had been inaugurated on this symbolic ‘Stone of Scone’, to which a copious mythology had also become attached. Edward I presented the Chair, as a holy relic, to the Shrine of St Edward the Confessor in Westminster Abbey, and most English monarchs since the fourteenth century have been crowned in it, the last being HM Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953. The Chair and the Stone have had eventful histories: in addition to physical alterations, they suffered abuse in the eighteenth century, suffragettes attached a bomb to them in 1914, they were hidden underground during the Second World War, and both were damaged by the gang that sacrilegiously broke into Westminster Abbey and stole the Stone in 1950. It was recovered and restored to the Chair, but since 1996 the Stone has been exhibited on loan in Edinburgh Castle. Now somewhat battered through age, the Chair was once highly ornate, being embellished with gilding, painting and coloured glass. Yet, despite its profound historical significance, until now it has never been the subject of detailed archaeological recording. Moreover, the remaining fragile decoration was in need of urgent conservation, which was carried out in 2010?12, accompanied by the first holistic study of the Chair and Stone. In 2013 the Chair was redisplayed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Coronation of HM The Queen. The latest investigations have revealed and documented the complex history of the Chair: it has been modified on several occasions, and the Stone has been reshaped and much altered since it left Scone. This volume assembles, for the first time, the complementary evidence derived from history, archaeology and conservation, and presents a factual account of the Coronation Chair and the Stone of Scone, not as separate artefacts, but as the entity that they have been for seven centuries. Their combined significance to the British Monarchy and State – and to the history and archaeology of the English and Scottish nations – is greater than the sum of their parts. Also published here for the first time is the second Coronation Chair, made for Queen Mary II in 1689. Finally, accounts are given of the various full-size replica chairs in Britain and Canada, along with a selection of the many models in metal and ceramic which have been made during the last two centuries.

Book excerpt: 25 days in a life . . . It's 1975 and high school student Paul Roberts has recently left his church. He struggles to find a morality based upon something more than common belief or personal opinion. Then he becomes engaged in a series of conversations with a co-worker. Soon they have embarked upon a journey that neither had imagined possible. "...The Oxbow Revelation reads like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance crossed with East of Eden, with shades of American Graffiti as its backdrop." "... A serious, mysterious and sometimes sexy book about finding morality." Interwoven with humorous episodes of cruising the main drag and poignant stories of first love, Paul and his co-worker consider how the practical application of philosophical realism can guide human values. Originally poised to ignore the fact that their descriptions of realism also mirror the attributes of God, their examples keep echoing other religious stories, East and West. The mystery compounds until they can even understand the "virgin birth" through the eyes of realism. "Religious philosophy for the common man. You can focus on reason, ignoring every religious reference within the book, and the self-evident values remain. But don't ignore too much; this is cutting-edge religious scholarship." "...an opening salvo for a new religious realism." A compelling look at religion beyond belief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American West is a complex region that has inspired generations of writers and artists. Often portrayed as a quintessential landscape that symbolizes promise and progress for a developing nation, the American West is also a diverse space that has experienced conflicting and competing hopes and expectations. While it is frequently imagined as a place enabling dreams of new beginnings for settler communities, it is likewise home to long-standing indigenous populations as well as many other ethnic and racial groups who have often produced different visions of the land. This History encompasses the intricacy of Western American literature by exploring myriad genres and cultural movements, from ecocriticism, settler colonial studies and transnational theory, to race, ethnic, gender and sexuality studies. Written by a host of leading historians and literary critics, this book offers readers insight into the West as a site that sustains canonical and emerging authors alike, and as a region that exceeds national boundaries in addressing long-standing global concerns and developments.
