Book excerpt: "Best Friends tells the story of two aspiring young women whose correspondence span a period of twenty-seven years, during the sixties, when they are involved in the Downtown art, theater, music and political scene of the time, encountering and befriending people like; Bob Dylan, Dustin Hoffman, Shel Silverstein, Phil Ochs, Sam Shepard, Anna Halperin, Timothy Leary, Andre Gregory, Spaulding Gray, Eli Seigel, Andy Warhol, and ends during the eighties when their lives have spun off into widely divergent paths, one of them tragically. It is the story of a brilliant woman with remarkable vitality whose life was often interrupted by bouts of acute schizophrenia. While the story is personal, the letters also catalog the wider world events. As Beth becomes a successful travel writer, her letters are sent from Ireland during the Troubles, from Israel in the wake of the six-day war, and from Berlin just after the building of the Wall. You hear the authentic voices of two women growing up, and then growing older, at the heart of the 20th century--reflecting on their lives and wondering about their future against the fast-changing background of social and political turmoil, as men land on the surface of the moon. The letters are real (rediscovered in the back of a file drawer) and offer insight, not just about the lives of these particular women but perhaps all women who came of age at that time and place, seen through the lens of a remarkable friendship."--

He dreams of becoming the next J.R.R. Tolkien and he keeps falling hopelessly in love. Poor Oscar may never get what he wants, thanks to the Fukú - the curse that has haunted his family for generations. With dazzling energy and insight Díaz immerses us in the tumultuous lives of Oscar; his runaway sister Lola; their beautiful mother Belicia; and in the family's uproarious journey from the Dominican Republic to the US and back. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pathbreaking volume, Velina Hasu Houston gathers together eleven plays that speak in the "hybridized, unique American voices of Asian descent -- and often dissent." These writers resist the bigotry that attempts to target them solely as people of color as well as the homogenizing tendencies of a multiculturalism that fails to recognize the varied make-up of Asian America. Anthologized for the first time, these plays testify to the rich complexity of Asian American experience while they also demonstrate the different styles and thematic concerns of the individual playwrights. What are Asian American plays about? Family conflicts, sexuality, social upheaval, betrayal ... the stuff of all drama. Whether the characters are a middle-aged Taiwanese woman who is married to an Irish American and who dreams of opening a Chinese restaurant, a Chinese American female bond trader trying to survive a corporate takeover, or an ABC (American Born Chinese) gay man whose lover has AIDS, their Asian-ness is only a part of their story. As a playwright, Houston is keenly aware of the rigid formulas that often exclude writers of color and women women writers from mainstream theater. But Still, Like air, I'll Rise brings forth vibrant new work that challenges producers and audiences to broaden their expectations, to attend to the unfamiliar voices that expresses the universal and particular vision of Asian American playwrights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely known for his wit and flamboyance, Oscar Wilde was a great advocate of art for art’s sake. This charming collection of his prose and drama includes his most evocative works complete with his first, and only, novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, a tale of pure beauty and unadulterated decadence. Also included are his fascinating short stories, like the delightful tale of The Happy Prince and the poignant satire, The Birthday of the Infanta with its much darker overtones. Among his plays are comedies such as Lady Windermere’s Fan and A Woman of No Importance, seemingly trivial but mercilessly exposing Victorian hypocrisies. The book also includes the controversial and macabre tragedy, Salomé which was designed to make his audience shudder by its depiction of unnatural passion. Vividly engaging and beautifully illustrated, Jaico Classics’ edition of Oscar Wilde’s timeless work is musthave for a true lover of literature and art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two weeks afterwards, Oscar asked Professor Koening for a second date, oops! German Dialogue! In the meanwhile, he had encouraged Cutie to have one of her dialogues with the professor off campus. Cutie asked the professor to meet her at the same restaurant Oscar had his class. Oscar took Cutie to the restaurant before the appointed time; he did not want the professor to see him for obvious reasons. The dialogue went well, and the professor took Cutie back to campus. Cutie told Oscar about the wonderful time they had together, and the affable personality of Professor Koenig. Oscar was delighted about Cutie's successful dialogue and the intriguing web he was weaving. He had to prevent Cutie from conjuring up any suspicion relative to the ulterior motive he harbored in asking for a second German dialogue. Professor Koenig's house was a large luxurious palatial mansion. Oscar stopped in the circular driveway; he climbed the marble staircase to a big door that signaled entrance to the palace. He spoke to the footman at the door and then went back down the stairs. Oscar turned around to see the footman opened the door, and goose-bumps with a tingling feeling swept over him. Professor Koening stepped out in a red dress that accentuated, indeed flaunted, ever curve in her incredibly sexy body. Oscar opened the door; Professor Koening graciously entered the car. As Oscar looked around he saw a magnificent view of the city and the Caribbean Sea below. He was high up in St. Andrew Hills, which was indicative of the unquestioned highest dating peak of his young life. His heart was racing; he was trembling as he entered the driver's seat. He did not put his hand on the steering wheel in order to conceal his nervousness. He sat there briefly, trying to make light conversation; never in his life was he in proximity to such a gorgeous creature of brain and beauty. How could he even begin to communicate on a sexual level with this outstanding woman of power, wealth, and sophistication? While he was in his contemplation, she accidentally touched his leg, and LJS jumped like a frightened puppy.
