Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Reverend Octavius Pickard-Cambridge The list of birds shot or observed by the party in Egypt in this year includes 176 species, of 139 of which specimens were obtained. It was in connexion with this list that my father first came into communication (on an introduction from Mr. Bond) with Professor Alfred Newton, who gave him some kind help, and afterwards (through his annual visits to Bloxworth for many years) became a great friend. I have not been able to trace the collection, but I believe that it was transferred by Mr. Bradshaw to the British Museum, and the specimens are probably among those at South Kensington. Book Synopsis The Aurelian Legacy – a History of British Butterflies and their Collectors by : Michael Salmon
Download or read book The Aurelian Legacy – a History of British Butterflies and their Collectors written by Michael Salmon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the collecting of butterflies is today an emotive subject, it is impossible to separate a history of British butterflies from a history of their collectors, without whose activities our knowledge of the identification, occurrence, distribution, and variation of British butterflies would be much the poorer. Liberally laced with contemporary quotations, this book brings to life the past three hundred years of butterfly study, with details of early societies, collecting equipment, biographies of 101 deceased lepidopterists, with portraits where available, as well as the chequered history in Britain of some 35 species of butterfly. The colour plates include some of the finest butterfly illustrations ever.
Book Synopsis The English Parson-naturalist by : Patrick Armstrong
Download or read book The English Parson-naturalist written by Patrick Armstrong and published by Gracewing Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These parson-naturalists made a significant contribution to the development of British scientific natural history, and played an important role in the foundation of the conservation movement and in the origins of organisations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the National Trust. This book presents a full range of interesting and sometimes eccentric individuals from the early days of the Christian faith in the British Isles to modern times. Missionary endeavor and service to the Empire brought the influence of the English parson-naturalist to the very ends of the earth. A key to the appreciation of the success of the parson-naturalist phenomenon is understanding the social milieu in which these men worked. Until the twentieth century clergy were members of a relatively tightly-knit social group, often related to one another by kinship or marriage; a man's clerical colleagues were also his scientific colleagues and his kinsfolk.
