Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of entrepreneurship, in spite of its origins in the 19th century, has been rather limited. The study of women entrepreneurs, in particular, is of a relatively recent origin. It was probably felt that the contributions of women entrepreneurs to the economy were not significant enough to warrant independent study. With the entry of women into the economic world, thing have charged. The boundaries that hitherto sharply defined the gender roles have lost their significance to some extent; the time has come to try and determine gender-based differences, if any, in the entire process of entrepreneurship and small business development. In India, the study of women's enterprise has long straddled the two perspectives of entrepreneurship and women's integration into the mainstream economic activity. Participation of Indian women in direct economic activity is a relatively recent phenomenon, except in the cases of the rural and the urban poor. Entrepreneurship and small business are attractive and practicable for both men and women. Entrepreneurship is additionally attractive to women, as it enhances their self-esteem and personal freedom, while offering the opportunity to balance family life and work. However, in the context of their traditional socialisation, they have to resolve many personal and social issues before becoming entrepreneurs. This book is an attempt to define the demographic profile of the typical middle-income urban woman entrepreneurs. It examines the issue of priority of their business. There is a dearth of details in entrepreneurship literature with regard to the managerial/marketing activities and orientations and the impact of enterprise training. It is all the more so in the context of Indian women entrepreneurs. Apart from the exploration of the women entrepreneurs' networks and their impact on the business, this book has tried to assess their contributions to Indian economy. More than anything else, the book has attempted to bring in a managerial rather than a sociological orientation to their efforts. It is hoped that book will be of great value to those who are interested in the study of specific segments of entrepreneurs.

Book excerpt: Running a small business provides opportunity for greater success, increased growth, and potentially the chance to move to the global business arena, yet also much more risk. Small businesses not only have less employment, but also less annual revenue than a regular-sized business. With the growth of large corporations and chain businesses, it has become harder to maintain the survival of a small business. The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought more pressure onto the already unsteady survival of small businesses, due to forced closures, decreased agility, fewer technological innovations, and smaller customer bases. The Research Anthology on Small Business Strategies for Success and Survival offers current strategies for small businesses that can be utilized in order to maintain equal footing during challenging times. With the proper strategies available to small business owners, small businesses could not only survive, but also excel despite the environment that surrounds them. Covering topics including decision management, new supportive technologies, sustainable development, and micro-financing, this text is ideal for small business owners, entrepreneurs, startup companies, family-owned and operated businesses, restaurateurs, local retailers, managers, executives, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book excerpt: George Bernard Shaw once said that reasonable people adapt themselves to the world but unreasonable people adapt the world to themselves. In a sense, this book explores how these so-called ‘unreasonable people’ may interact to re-fashion the world around them in fragile economic development. Drawing on empirical research in the volatile and traditional context of Afghanistan, the study investigates the challenge of poor women’s participation in business and diverse outcomes for local development. Institutional Innovation and Change in Value Chain Development takes a unique look at nuanced institutional phenomena through the lens of social institutions, with a subtle appreciation of the interaction of structure and agency. Drawing on in-depth qualitative research in Afghanistan, the case studies specifically investigate the transformation of the women’s norm of purdah, and the subsequent development of new market institutions in three women’s enterprises. Shedding new light on the opaque process of institutional change, the research shows that external actors (such as NGOs) can both initiate and guide institutional development in fragile environments. Yet there may be limitations to their endeavours, with strong resistance from local power holders. Meanwhile, dominant entrepreneurs are shown to play a major role in fostering institutional development pathways. This influences the scope of inclusion and exclusion in enterprise and value chains, and broader streams of socio-economic development.
