Book Synopsis Marco Polo's China by : Stephen G. Haw
Download or read book Marco Polo's China written by Stephen G. Haw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marco Polo’s famous book about his journey to China, written in 1298, continues to be a subject of considerable controversy. One recent work on the subject argues that Marco Polo never went to China at all, and other scholars have pointed out apparent mistakes and important omissions in Marco’s writings, including his failure to mention the Great Wall, and his apparently erroneous description of the course of the Yellow River. Haw re-examines Marco Polo’s writings. The main arguments against his credibility have been negative, concentrating on things that it is argued he should have seen and noted but did not. The most serious of these supposed omissions are generally said to be his failure to describe the Chinese writing system, tea, foot-binding and the Great Wall of China. Yet Haw argues that what he does mention is impressive and argues strongly for his veracity. This book clarifies Marco Polo’s itineraries in China and proposes several new identifications of places mentioned. Relying extensively on original Chinese sources and supplemented by Haw’s wide knowledge of China, Marco Polo’s China presents a convincing argument and concludes that his work is an accurate, important and useful source from an extraordinary period of Chinese history.

Download or read book The Tabletop Revolution written by Marco Arnaudo and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an overview of the ongoing revolution in tabletop gaming design and culture, which exploded to unprecedented levels of vitality in the 21st century, leading to new ways of creating, marketing, and experiencing a game. Designers have become superstars, publishers have improved quality control, and the community of players is expanding. Most importantly, new and old players have started engaging with the games in a more meaningful way. The book explores the reasons for these changes. It describes how games have begun to keep players engaged until the end. It analyzes the ways in which traditional mechanics have been reimagined to give them more variety and complexity, and reviews the unprecedented mechanics found and perfected. Very interesting is the exploration of how games have performed novel tasks such as reducing conflict, fostering cooperation, creating aesthetic experiences, and telling stories. The book is aimed at scholars, dedicated and aspiring fans, and game designers who want to expand their toolbox with the most up-to-date innovations in the profession.

Book Synopsis Love, Pride & Murder by : Dennis A. Feece
Download or read book Love, Pride & Murder written by Dennis A. Feece and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Cover Love, Pride, and Murder is a murder mystery taking place in New Hampshire, primarily Concord and upstate, near Hanover and Woodstock. It is told, in first-person style, by T. B. Stone, a local private investigator. TB is decidedly not hard-boiled, nor is he painfully rational. Instead, he tends to be intuitive, conjuring up solutions inductively with the help of friends and colleagues. The plot unfolds largely through encounters with others and is driven by relationships that form along the way. As an example, and as the novel progresses, TB finds himself falling for his client, Lucia, who ultimately helps him pursue the case.TB gets caught up with spies, assassins, and an assortment of unsavory deeds. The solution to the mystery is less obvious than it may seem, and in the end, there is nothing cozy about it. However, cozy is as cozy does, so most readers will find it comfortable reading.

Download or read book Hard Corps written by Marco Martinez and published by Crown Forum. This book was released on 2008 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 17, Marco Martinez was a thug--a gun-toting, car-stealing gang member. At the age of 22, he was a hero--the recipient of the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism under fire in the Iraq War. This is the story of his incredible transformation and of his experiences on the front lines of the War on Terror. Writing with passion and candor, Martinez brings us back to his gang days, then takes us through the grueling ordeal of Marine boot camp and the even-more-punishing training at the School of Infantry to show just how warriors are made. Then he unfolds a warrior's tale: we join his Marine squad as they patrol the most dangerous war zone imaginable, the narrow, treacherous streets of Baghdad, and into a brutal terrorist ambush that calls upon reserves of ferocity and courage none of the Marines could ever be certain they possessed.--From publisher description.

Download or read book Crusade 2.0 written by John Feffer and published by City Lights Books. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his official response to the attacks of September 11, George W. Bush invoked the Crusades, tapping into a centuries-long history of fear and aggression. The West's longstanding perception of Islam as a threat has taken on new and more complex implications in the twenty-first century, as years of migration and resulting demographic shifts have brought the "enemy" within Western borders. Virulent opposition to the planned construction of an Islamic center near the 9/11 attack site in New York City reveals much about the intensity of public sentiments simmering just below the surface. As the United States and countries across Europe struggle with a resurgence of unexamined fear and antagonism, often directed against their own citizens, the imperative for better understanding could not be greater. Crusade 2.0 examines the resurgence of anti-Islamic sentiment in the West and its global implications. John Feffer discusses the influence of three "unfinished wars"—the Crusades, the Cold War, and the current "war on terror." He presents a timely, concise and provocative look at current events in the context of historical trends and goes beyond a "clash of civilizations" critique to offer concrete ways to defuse the ticking bomb of Islamophobia. "John Feffer's Crusade 2.0: The West's Resurgent War On Islam offers a brief but effective exposé of a social cancer that continues to grow exponentially, in America and Europe, threatening the security and civil liberties of Muslims and the principles and values of Western democracies."—John L. Esposito "John Feffer's illuminating and important new work, Crusade 2.0, sheds light on the disturbing phenomenon of Islamophobia in America with a clear-eyed view of history, meticulous research, and persuasive arguments. This accessible and informative book shows how fear-mongering, when married to ignorance and selfish political agendas, not only threatens to marginalize entire communities of innocent people but also undermine the core values of pluralism, tolerance and fairness that define America."—Wajahat Ali "If you want to understand the particular madness of America's twenty-first century, you need to read John Feffer's account of how Washington launched "crusade 2.0," including two invasions and occupations of Muslim lands and a Global War on Terror sporting aptly named Hellfire missiles aimed directly at the Muslim world. Add in the injection of fear of Islam directly into the American bloodstream and the rise of Islamophobia as domestic political red meat, and you have a truly American nightmare. Feffer is its Homer and this is our sad Odyssey."—Tom Engelhardt John Feffer is co-director of Foreign Policy in Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC. He is the author of several books, including North Korea, South Korea. His essays have been published in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and elsewhere; he has been interviewed by CNN, MSNBC, Al Jazeera, Democracy Now! and other international news media.
Book Synopsis The Economic Organization of East Asian Capitalism by : Marco Orru
Download or read book The Economic Organization of East Asian Capitalism written by Marco Orru and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1997 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia's dynamic entrance into the global economy has provided a fruitful avenue for research in economic sociology. In this perceptive and timely volume, authors Nicole Woolsey Biggart, Gary G. Hamilton, and the late Marco Orru theorize Asian capitalism and analyze the economic organization of East Asia. Presenting differing dimensions of a Weberian perspective, the authors first provide a theoretical grounding, then consider capitalism in East Asia comparatively, and finally contrast the economies of East Asia and Europe. The Economic Organization of East Asian Capitalism shows how radically different social and cultural institutions can lead to economies that are organized and work in remarkably similar ways. This thought-provoking volume will be essential for students and professionals in the fields of political science, management, third world studies, sociology, international relations, international business, and cross-cultural studies.
