Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Photography The alchemists, amidst the multiplicity of their processes - in their vain search for the philosopher's stone and the elixir vitae stumbled upon a peculiar combination of silver with chlorine, which they called horn-silver - as, by fusion, the white powder they obtained by precipitation was converted into a horn - like substance. They Observed that this horn-silver was blackened by light, and as they taught that silver only differed from gold in being mercury interpenetrated by the sulphureous principle of the sun's rays, they concluded that this change was the commencement of the process by which their dreams were to be realized. Failing, however, to produce gold from horn-silver, the fact of its blackening was simply recorded, and no further investigations were made into this remarkable phenomenon. Petit, in 1722, noticed that solutions of nitrate Of potash and muriate of ammonia crystallized more readily in the light than they did in darkness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hand Camera Manual: A Beginner's Guide to Photography in Its Connection With the Hand Camera Hand-camera work has now become not only so fascinating a pursuit, but so useful a hobby, as to need special attention and study, apart from other branches of photography. In this direction the difficulty hitherto has lain in the fact that works devoted to photography only partially applied to the Hand Camera. Even then too, the application could only be made by one already fully conversant with, at all events, the general outline of the art or science. Is is the purpose of this manual to supply the missing link, to provide an elementary handbook to photography in its direct connection with the use of the hand-camera. Download or read book The Amateur Photographer's Hand Book written by Arthur Hope and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur Photographer's Hand Book: A Manual of Instruction for the Amateur Although this book cannot be called an invention, yet necessity is its mother; it is needed by beginners, by amateurs and by many who make the art a business. And this, after all, may be only another way of alluding to "a long felt want." It is only a little book, yet it embodies the result of a "powerful amount" of work and experiment. When the author was beguiled into buying a camera many years ago, he could find nothing in print which explained clearly the various operations. There were numerous instruction books, but they omitted the explanations which were of vital importance to the beginner. Therefore he was compelled to grope in the dark, experimenting continually, and often uselessly, wasting precious time - not to mention dollars - which he could ill afford to lose. The instruction books misled him, as they do to-day, and chemicals were wasted because the formulas were wrongly given. "Dissolve one ounce of pyro in sixteen ounces water." He did so, and after four-fifths of the solution had grown black and valueless, he learned that it was not wise to dissolve more pyro than was to be used immediately. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Practice of Photography: An Elementary Textbook on the Scientific Theory and a Laboratory Manual While the primary purpose of the book is a class-room text, the author has aimed to make it useful to many earnest amateurs by collecting and systematizing for them material now widely scattered through the literature of photography. For the aid of such workers and for the instructor many references are given to the literature which will draw atten tion to and aid in the study of the original work. In the British Journal Almanac for 1916 (at page 503) will be found a list of the journals of the world which print photographic information. For an English-speaking worker the most generally useful are: the British Journal of Photography (u. 5. Agent, George Murphy, 59 E. 9th Street, New York), the Journal of the Royal Photographic Society (harrison and Sons, 45 Pall Mall, London, S. The Photo Miniature (tennant and Ward, New York), American Photography (221 Columbus Avenue, Boston, Mass.) and possibly still more popular ones, as the Photo Era and the Camera. Download or read book A Manual of Photographic Chemistry, Theoretical and Practical (Classic Reprint) written by T. Frederick Hardwich and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Photographic Chemistry, Theoretical and Practical Since the publication of the previous editions of this Manual, two changes of importance have occurred; the nomenclature and atomic weights of chemical compounds have to a great extent been altered, and the collodion process has, especially in England, been largely supplanted by gelatine emulsion. It has, however, seemed judicious to the Editor of this edition neither to entirely discard the old nomenclature in favor of the new, nor to assume the collodion process to be defunct. Hence a work, intended to be of every-day use to photographers, would have its value impaired by the exclusive use of terms as yet imperfectly understood. Download or read book The Principles and Practice of Photography Familiarly Explained written by Jabez Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Photography Familiarly Explained: Being a Manual for Beginners, and Reference Book for Expert Photographers; Comprising the Collodion Process The word photography means drawing, engraving, or writing by Light. You are doubtless aware that white light - light from the sun, for instance - is composed of three different colours Yellow, Red, and Blue it also possesses three distinct properties - Illuminating, Heating, and Chemical powers. These three powers are singularly connected with the three colours.' The Illuminating property exists mainly in the Yellow Rays - the Heating property in the Red - and the Chemical in the Blue or Violet rays. With the Illuminating power you are daily familiar the July sun gives certain proof of its Heating power 5 and it is your present purpose to learn that all Photography is based on its Chemical power. For the full explanation of these facts I must refer you to Hunt's Researches on Light 3 in that excellent work is detailed in a most satisfactory manner the threefold function of a sunbeam - to illuminate, to heat, and to produce chemical change. That these three properties are distinct from each other is proved by their being separable from each other. Thus, black glass stops the illuminating and the chemical rays, but allows the heating rays to pass through 3 dark blue glass arrests the heating and illuminating rays, but allows the chemical ones to get through; while yellow or orange glass admits light and heat, but denies passage to the chemical rays. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uncle Alberts Manual of Practical Photography and Guide to the Reproductive Processes Millions of words and acres of paper wasted on unimaginative repetition - what better proof than this could there be of the utter sterility of scientific cribbing}: No I Uncle Albert's dependents may have been robbed of some of the posthu mous fruits of his scientific and artistic labours, but, in presenting his Manual of Practical Photography, etc., to the public, I am happily conscious that not only is a belated recognition being accorded to original research of a high order, but a blow has been struck that will help, in some measure, to cleanse the Aegean stables of photographic upstartism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Carbon Manual: Or the Production of Photographic Prints in Permanent Pigments A carbon photograph, in the strict sense Of'the word, is an image in carbon produced by the action of light. The term, as commonly used by photographers, has, however, a wider application, and is employed to designate any sun picture produced in permanent pig ments, whether consisting of carbon or not. Almost all the methods which have been proposed for the production of such pictures depend upon One prin ciple. They are based on the fact that light renders certain soluble bodies insoluble in the usual menstrua. This principle admits of varied application in producing pictures; but in the processes which have been brought to the highest practical perfection, some-coloring mat tor - Indian ink or lampblack for instance - has been added to a colorless body like gelatine or gum, which.
