Book Synopsis The Turn to Provisionality in Contemporary Art by : Raphael Rubinstein
Download or read book The Turn to Provisionality in Contemporary Art written by Raphael Rubinstein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his influential essay “Provisional Painting,” Raphael Rubinstein applied the term “provisional” to contemporary painters whose work looked intentionally casual, dashed-off, tentative, unfinished or self-cancelling; who appeared to have deliberately turned away from "strong" painting for something that seemed to constantly risk failure or inconsequence. In this collection of essays, Rubinstein expands the scope of his original article by surveying the historical and philosophical underpinnings of provisionality in recent visual art, as well as examining the works of individual artists in detail. He also engages crucial texts by Samuel Beckett and philosopher Gianni Vattimo. Re-examining several decades of painting practices, Rubinstein argues that provisionality, in all its many forms, has been both a foundational element in the history of modern art and the encapsulation of an attitude that is profoundly contemporary.

Book Synopsis Perception and Agency in Shared Spaces of Contemporary Art by : Cristina Albu
Download or read book Perception and Agency in Shared Spaces of Contemporary Art written by Cristina Albu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the interconnections between art, phenomenology, and cognitive studies. Contributors question the binary oppositions generally drawn between visuality and agency, sensing and thinking, phenomenal art and politics, phenomenology and structuralism, and subjective involvement and social belonging. Instead, they foreground the many ways that artists ask us to consider how we sense, think, and act in relation to a work of art.

Book Synopsis France and the Visual Arts Since 1945 by : Catherine Dossin
Download or read book France and the Visual Arts Since 1945 written by Catherine Dossin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking on the myth of France's creative exhaustion following World War II, this collection of essays brings together an international team of scholars, whose research offers English readers a rich and complex overview of the place of France and French artists in the visual arts since 1945. Addressing a wide range of artistic practices, spanning over seven decades, and using different methodologies, their contributions cover ground charted and unknown. They introduce greater depth and specificity to familiar artists and movements, such as Lettrism, Situationist International or Nouveau Réalisme, while bringing to the fore lesser known artists and groups, including GRAPUS, the Sociological Art Collective, and Nicolas Schöffer. Collectively, they stress the political dimensions and social ambitions of the art produced in France at the time, deconstruct the traditional geography of the French art world, and highlight the multiculturalism of the French art scene that resulted from its colonial past and the constant flux of artistic travels and migrations. Ultimately, the book contributes to a story of postwar art in which France can be inscribed not as a main or sub chapter, but rather as a vector in the wider constellation of modern and contemporary art.
Book Synopsis Art, Global Maoism and the Chinese Cultural Revolution by : Jacopo Galimberti
Download or read book Art, Global Maoism and the Chinese Cultural Revolution written by Jacopo Galimberti and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to explore the global influence of Maoism on modern and contemporary art. Featuring eighteen original essays written by established and emerging scholars from around the world, and illustrated with fascinating images not widely known in the west, the volume demonstrates the significance of visuality in understanding the protean nature of this powerful worldwide revolutionary movement. Contributions address regions as diverse as Singapore, Madrid, Lima and Maputo, moving beyond stereotypes and misconceptions of Mao Zedong Thought's influence on art to deliver a survey of the social and political contexts of this international phenomenon. At the same time, the book attends to the the similarities and differences between each case study. It demonstrates that the chameleonic appearances of global Maoism deserve a more prominent place in the art history of both the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
