No solamente abriendo una nueva técnica de impresión-estampación eficaz, rápida y enormemente amplia y versátil en sus posibilidades plásticas sino también resolviendo y simplificando la complejidad de los viejos métodos de realización de libros e impresos. Su invención y su desarrollo se produce en paralelo con el de la sociedad y la tecnología de la era industrial, su número social, su dinámica comercial y su demanda cultural. La Litografía inventada por Senefelder como síntoma primero y emblemático de todo el sistema de impresión planográfico tendrá durante casi doscientos años, el doble cometido de su utilización industrial y comercial y por otra parte esencialmente artístico. Liberada en la segunda mitad del XIX de sus servidumbres por la fotografía y las técnicas de Offset (a las que ella misma ha dado lugar) constituirá uno de los lenguajes esenciales de la obra artística multiplicada. Su enorme trascendencia en las técnicas indirectas, en la electrografía o incluso en la base conceptual de la impresión digital, la convierten en uno de los inventos fundamentales de la historia contemporánea. Sin embargo, aun decantados y rescatados los medios manuales y más tradicionales de la litografía y aun contemplados en algunos ámbitos de las enseñanzas artísticas, no siempre han dispuesto del apoyo y la infraestructura suficientes acusando la dificultad de acceso y obtención de materiales propios y sobre todo de la orientación teórico - práctica adecuada.
