Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'a quietly impressive book, which does something most celebrity autobiographies shy away from: it seeks the truth and, more often than not, finds it.' - THE MAIL A look at the life and times of the man Sir Michael most looked up to. It started in the shadow of the pithead in a South Yorkshire mining village and ended up in tears before an audience of millions. Michael Parkinson's relationship with his late father John William was, and remains, a family love story overflowing with tenderness and tall tales of sporting valour, usually involving Yorkshire cricket or Barnsley FC. However, it was the overwhelming grief which poured out of Michael when Piers Morgan pressed him about John William in a television interview - four decades after the death of the father he encapsulated as 'Yorkshireman, miner, humorist and fast bowler' - that convinced one of the outstanding broadcasters and journalists of our time to delve deeper into the dynamics of their lives together. Co-written with his son Mike, this affectionate and revealing memoir explores the influences which shaped John William, Michael and succeeding generations of Parkinsons. The journey leads them from the depths of a Yorkshire coal mine, via the chapel, pub and picture-house, to a spot behind the bowler's arm at Lord's and the sands at Scarborough. While Like Father, Like Son conveys a powerful sense of time and place, it is wit, insight and, above all, enduring love which shine through its pages.

Book excerpt: THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE ALL YOU WERE CREATED FOR In Identity Crisis you will find power and purpose by putting your faith in the One who can transform your identity. Even in crisis, He can do far beyond anything you can imagine. What’s the greatest crisis in our world today? Dr. Bobby Wagner, contends it is our inability to believe in the power of God in our lives. Is it possible to read the Bible and believe God does not work powerfully through His people? Our miraculous identity in Christ has not ceased, our faith in it has. It seems we are losing our faith in our God given identity, in the Bible, in the church, and in our world. A dramatic transformation takes place when you believe in the power of the Gospel. As our unbelief continues one more person misses the Good News. As a result, of the nearly 75 million Americans who have trusted Jesus Christ for salvation, more than 70 million have never shared the Good News. In a postmodern and post Christian culture in the midst of a crisis of unbelief, the only way souls will be touched is if God’s people become witnesses of the power of the Gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even after a rise in gay and Black representation and production on TV in the 1990s, the sitcom became a "generic closet," restricting Black gay characters with narrative tropes. Drawing from 20 interviews with credited episode writers, key show-runners, and Black gay men, The Generic Closet situates Black-cast sitcoms as a unique genre that uses Black gay characters in service of the series' heterosexual main cast. Alfred L. Martin, Jr., argues that the Black community is considered to be antigay due to misrepresentation by shows that aired during the family viewing hour and that were written for the imagined, "traditional" Black family. Martin considers audience reception, industrial production practices, and authorship to unpack the claim that Black gay characters are written into Black-cast sitcoms such as Moesha, Good News, and Let's Stay Together in order to closet Black gayness. By exploring how systems of power produce ideologies about Black gayness, The Generic Closet deconstructs the concept of a monolithic Black audience and investigates whether this generic closet still exists.

Book excerpt: AMC's episodic drama Mad Men has become a cultural phenomenon, detailing America's preoccupation with commercialism and image in the Camelot of 1960s Kennedy-era America, while self-consciously exploring current preoccupations. The 12 critical essays in this collection offer a broad, interdisciplinary approach to this highly relevant television show, examining Mad Men as a cultural barometer for contemporary concerns with consumerism, capitalism and sexism. Topics include New Historicist parallels between the 1960s and the present day, psychoanalytical approaches to the show, the self as commodity, and the "Age of Camelot" as an "Age of Anxiety," among others. A detailed cast list and episode guide are included. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a new kind of contrastive analysis of two unrelated languages — English and Hebrew — based on the semiotic concepts of invariance, markedness and distinctive feature theory. It concentrates on linguistic forms and constructions which are remarkably different in each language despite the fact that they share the same familiar classifications and labels. Tobin demonstrates how and why traditional and modern syntactic categories such as grammatical number; verb tense, aspect, mood and voice; conditionals and interrogatives; etc., are not equivalent across languages. It is argued that these so-called universal concepts function differently in each language system because they belong to distinct language-specific semantic domains which are marked by different sets of semantic features. The data used in this volume have been taken from a wide range of both spoken and written discourse and texts reflecting people's actual use of language presented in their relevant linguistic and situational contexts.

Book excerpt: Map Detailing Ancient Olmec and Maya States that Rimmed the Gulf of Mexico It seems that the human race has an abiding tendency to know what surrounds our often routine, mundane lives. There is an even greater tendency to involve ourselves in perceived mystery, particularly when it involves prophecy and doomsday scenarios. The astronomical Alignment on December 21, 2012 is just such an event that encompasses all the elements of a great mystery, including doomsday prophecy and more. The book chronicles what a group of noted scientists say we can expect to happen, as the sun and earth align with the center of our own galaxy. The reader is cautioned to hold on tight, and be mentally prepared for mind-bending surprises, as a cabal of our best scientific minds slug it out over the portent of the Alignment during a symposium at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ.
