Depuis que les archives, notamment soviétiques et d'Allemagne de l'Est, sont ouvertes, il est possible de revisiter l'histoire et de répondre à des questions laissées souvent sans réponse. On distingue mieux le rôle central qu'y joua l'Union soviétique, dans son déclenchement comme dans sa conduite ; on perçoit ce que la liberté doit au Royaume-Uni, un temps seul contre Hitler et ses alliés ; on comprend comment, au cœur même de la confrontation, se dessine le monde de l'après-guerre. Ce premier tome aborde l'agression hitlérienne, l'effondrement de la France et la résistance britannique ; il démonte les ressorts des débuts du conflit. Il montre aussi comment ses acteurs les plus humbles l'ont perçu, grâce à de nombreux documents commentés dont la quasi-totalité (plus de 100) n'ont jamais été publiés. Il fait droit ainsi à une vision de l'histoire qui sait qu'elle est faite, avant tout, de chair et de sang. Après avoir remis l'ordre européen en question et dépecé la Tchécoslovaquie (mars-avr. 1939) après les accords de Munich (sept. 1938), Hitler, grâce au pacte germano-soviétique (23 août 1939), s'attaque à la Pologne (1er sept.
