Book excerpt: This study examined the motivating factors for students to enroll in advanced placement math courses based on the data collected from the 2016 High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The key variables reviewed in the study were the students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivational reasons for taking more math courses, math course credit graduation requirements in high school, and whether a parent worked in a STEM career. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors were viewed through the lens of motivation based on their personal successes and future plans compared to influences from school personnel, family, and peers. The study used the student survey to create a subsample of 11th grade students as of the 2012 school year, enrolled in public schools, and who had answered the item regrading whether or not they had taken an AP math course (n = 4996). The results indicated students were more motivated by intrinsic factors compared to extrinsic factors, regardless of sex. Sex differences did play a role when considering extrinsic motivation, after controlling for previous math achievement and socio-economic status. For males, extrinsic motivation factors increased their odds of taking an AP Math course. In addition, students who were enrolled in high schools that required at least three math credits for graduation were more likely to take an AP math course. Lastly, having a parent with a career in a STEM field significantly increased the odds that a student enrolled in AP math courses.

In my experience as a high school science teacher, that stereotype doesn't fit due to large numbers of females enrolled in my classes. In order to gain a little more information about students that enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) science courses, especially females, this research thesis will be focusing on the student's motivation for enrolling in the course. At one particular high school, students in AP science courses were surveyed and asked to respond on a Likert-scale, to eight different types of motivation for enrolling in the class. As a result of this study, there was no statistically significant difference in the responses between males and females for all eight types of motivation. The findings did show that females were slightly more motivated by college acceptance, and that males were slightly more motivated by previous success in similar subjects. The study did bring to light that at this high school the most motivating factor for all students was college acceptance, and the least for all students were parental pressure.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the National Math and Science Initiative's Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program (APTIP) on the number of students taking AP science courses and their performance. The study evaluated 39 schools over a six-year period in six states that participate in the APTIP. The National Math and Science Initiative provided data for cohort I.A general linear model for repeated measures was used to evaluate the data. Data was evaluated three years prior to the intervention and three years during the intervention, which will actually continue for two more years (2012 and 2013) since cohort I schools were awarded five years of support. Students in APTIP schools enrolled in more AP science exams (AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, and AP Physics-B) over the course of the intervention. The quantity of students earning qualifying scores increased during the intervention years. APTIP is a multi-tiered program that includes seven days of teacher training, three six-hour student prep sessions, school equipment, reduced exam fees, and monetary incentives for students and teachers. This program positively impacted the quantity of enrollment and qualifying scores during the three years evaluated in this study. Increases in the number of female and African American students' test takers their and qualifying scores were seen in all three years of the APTIP intervention. This study supports the premise that the first step to increasing the Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) pipeline is giving access to advanced courses to more students in high schools.
