Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jackknife and bootstrap are the most popular data-resampling meth ods used in statistical analysis. The resampling methods replace theoreti cal derivations required in applying traditional methods (such as substitu tion and linearization) in statistical analysis by repeatedly resampling the original data and making inferences from the resamples. Because of the availability of inexpensive and fast computing, these computer-intensive methods have caught on very rapidly in recent years and are particularly appreciated by applied statisticians. The primary aims of this book are (1) to provide a systematic introduction to the theory of the jackknife, the bootstrap, and other resampling methods developed in the last twenty years; (2) to provide a guide for applied statisticians: practitioners often use (or misuse) the resampling methods in situations where no theoretical confirmation has been made; and (3) to stimulate the use of the jackknife and bootstrap and further devel opments of the resampling methods. The theoretical properties of the jackknife and bootstrap methods are studied in this book in an asymptotic framework. Theorems are illustrated by examples. Finite sample properties of the jackknife and bootstrap are mostly investigated by examples and/or empirical simulation studies. In addition to the theory for the jackknife and bootstrap methods in problems with independent and identically distributed (Li.d.) data, we try to cover, as much as we can, the applications of the jackknife and bootstrap in various complicated non-Li.d. data problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jackknife and the bootstrap are nonparametric methods for assessing the errors in a statistical estimation problem. They provide several advantages over the traditional parametric approach: the methods are easy to describe and they apply to arbitrarily complicated situations; distribution assumptions, such as normality, are never made. This monograph connects the jackknife, the bootstrap, and many other related ideas such as cross-validation, random subsampling, and balanced repeated replications into a unified exposition. The theoretical development is at an easy mathematical level and is supplemented by a large number of numerical examples. The methods described in this monograph form a useful set of tools for the applied statistician. They are particularly useful in problem areas where complicated data structures are common, for example, in censoring, missing data, and highly multivariate situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jackknife is a resampling method that uses subsets of the original database by leaving out one observation at a time from the sample. The paper develops fast algorithms for jackknifing inequality indices with only a few passes through the data. The number of passes is independent of the number of observations. Hence, the method provides an efficient way to obtain standard errors of the estimators even if sample size is large. We apply our method using micro data on individual incomes for Germany and the US.

Book excerpt: London, 1888. The streets of Whitechapel are haunted by a killer. In the darkening shadows, he waits, and no woman is safe. For Inspector Jonas Robb, each night brings a new victim, a new terror. It’s also brought two strangers—David Elliot and Sara Grant—who’ve arrived in London, seemingly with no past. What they do have is knowledge about the elusive Whitechapel fiend, including the name he calls himself: Jack the Ripper. Because David and Sara do have a past—it just happens to be in the future. Sent back in time, they’re in pursuit of a 21st-century madman whose purpose is to change history. Already, they can see his sinister influence at work. As the body count rises, Sara and David realize that their quarry and Robb’s have become linked in a way that threatens not only Victorian London, but the very fabric of time. Joining forces, they must stop the carnage before it’s too late—for the past and future.

The material should be accessible to advanced undergraduate students and is suitable for a course. It ranges from elementary statistics concepts (the theory behind MC simulations), through conventional Metropolis and heat bath algorithms, autocorrelations and the analysis of the performance of MC algorithms, to advanced topics including the multicanonical approach, cluster algorithms and parallel computing. Therefore, it is also of interest to researchers in the field. The book relates the theory directly to Web-based computer code. This allows readers to get quickly started with their own simulations and to verify many numerical examples easily. The present code is in Fortran 77, for which compilers are freely available. The principles taught are important for users of other programming languages, like C or C++.

When a beautiful Georgia coed is brutally murdered on the Appalachian Trail, detective Montaigne and his lovable but awkward partner Vern Wister are pulled into terra incognita. Montaigne not only has to hobnob with tennis studs at an elite university, and match wits with an arrogant attorney while bedding the man's ex-wife, he also has to keep trail dirt out of his Italian shoes, all while solving a murder and disappearance. In "Black Jackknife," author Peter Kurtz introduces a detective who has the panache of James Bond and the craftiness of Lieutenant Columbo. "Black Jackknife" is a mystery thriller with a little sex, a little blood, and several packets of freeze-dried noodles. Cue up some Dave Brubeck, strap on a backpack, and join Montaigne and Wister as they hunt for a mysterious psycho killer, lurking somewhere between downtown Atlanta and the trail shelter near Buzzard Knob.
