Book excerpt: Liz D'Angelo thinks the stress of caring for her Alzheimered mother is taking its toll but as the hallucinations Liz experiences grow more disturbing, she fears she too has the disabling disease. Words appear in the steam on her bathroom mirror and in flour on the table when she is baking. When an inner voice compels her to drive to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, in the dead of winter, Liz accepts the challenge, determined to face her fears. In a rented cottage, Devin James, the ghost of her mother's first love appears, desperately seeking help in finding his killer. Eight people were at the lake in 1945 and Devin is certain one of the other seven did him in. Liz insists it couldn't be either of her parents so it must be one of the other five; Mary, a love starved tease; Angel, a homely girl who doesn't have a chance of snaring her dream man; Johnny, the neighborhood clown with deep secrets; Vicky, a newcomer or; Vito, Devin's best friend. Liz refuses to consider her parents, Annie and Frank, as suspects but there is a slight possibility one of them was responsible for the death.

In the meantime, free-spirited Doris works hard at having fun and brings the author, her teenage babysitter, Tina, along for the ride. Doris is not the kind of woman Tina’s protective father and grandfather, a preacher with an eye for the ladies, approve of. That is, she is not a sweet little demure housewife. When her father-in-law complains that she is not acting like a lady, Doris counters, “To hell with ladies!” The author takes the reader on an initial joyful and unconventional journey and along divergent paths of family relationships, Jim Crowism, tragedy, loss, and love. The author says this book is payment for the debt she owes to Doris for her caring sisterhood when she was a young girl suffering a great loss and for the good times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle constitutes a major landmark and a real turning point in the evolution of psychoanalytic theory. Pushing aside the primacy of the tension-discharge-gratification model of mental dynamics, this work introduced the notion of a "daemonic force" within all human beings that slowly but insistently seeks psychic inactivity, inertia, and death. Politely dismissed by some as a pseudo-biological speculation and rapturously espoused by others as a bold conceptual advance, "death instinct" became a stepping stone to the latter conceptualizations of mind's attacks on itself, negative narcissism, addiction to near-death, and the utter destruction of meaning in some clinical situations. The concept also served as a bridge between the quintessentially Western psychoanalysis and the Eastern perspectives on life and death. These diverse and rich connotations of the proposal are elucidated in On Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle". Other consequences of Freud's 1920 paper - namely, the marginalization of ego instincts and the "upgrading" of aggression in the scheme of things - are also addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a negative therapeutic reaction the progress of treatment triggers a particular destructive dynamic in the patient. Initially, therapists considered it to be a result of the patient's pathology, but contemporary clinicians recognize that the therapist may significantly contribute to this process. Object relations clinicians see the individual as a social being that develops in relation to others whom the individual internalizes as good and bad objects. Jeffrey Seinfeld explores how an internal sabotaging self is identified with a rejecting object. This self is a reservoir of memories of how original caregivers rejected the child's needs, and the patient now expects the world to reject and disappoint her. If patients experience the therapist as a kind or caring person, they may feel that they are being lured into dependency and subsequent disappointment. Paradoxically, if patients feel attached to the therapist, this same attachment is experienced as a threatening dependency that must be destroyed. A relationship that could eventually strengthen the personality is rejected, and instead a negative reaction to the therapist and the therapeutic process is established. Jeffrey Seinfeld shows that in order for patients to heal, they must separate from the internal bad objects. This is often done with aggression against the therapist, who must be able to withstand the intense hostility, rage, and abuse of the patient. Only by surviving this aggression in the negative therapeutic reaction can the therapist allow the patient to integrate good and bad part objects in the transference. The therapist can eventually serve as a bridge in the integration of the divided good and bad selves and objects. Through case histories Seinfeld illustrates his way of entering into the patient's internal world. By helping patients understand the transference of their internal objects, they begin to understand their own experience of self and others, which leads to character change.

Book excerpt: “How do you feel, Diana?” asked the young lady. “I dunno,” Diana mumbled under her breath, “I don’t know how to explain it.” The young lady gently rested her hand over Diana’s shoulder, “Try.” A voice inside Diana told her to stop. Diana looked at the young lady. Her hazel eyes glittering in the sunlight gave Diana some hope. “I-” Diana paused. She watched the breeze play with the young lady’s hair. “Mhm, go on,” she smiled as she scribbled red ink all over her paper. Diana gave a weak smile, “It’s a weird feeling. It’s like having a big smile with one toothache. It is difficult to smile with pain. No one can see it, but I can feel it. Diana took another pause as she listened to the voice inside her, telling her to stop. The young lady focused her eyes on Diana’s, “Go on you’re doing great,” Diana shook her head, “As soon as I get rid of that dreadful toothache, I feel much relief. It also feels weird not having a tooth in that place anymore, but it gives me a feeling of comfort and freedom. I broke the chains.”
