Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We're all going to die. Yet in our medically advanced, technological age, many of us see death as a distant reality--something that happens only at the end of a long life or to other people. In The End of the Christian Life, Todd Billings urges Christians to resist that view. Instead, he calls us to embrace our mortality in our daily life and faith. This is the journey of genuine discipleship, Billings says: following the crucified and resurrected Lord in a world of distraction and false hopes. Drawing on his experience as a professor and father living with incurable cancer, Billings offers a personal yet deeply theological account of the gospel's expansive hope for small, mortal creatures. Artfully weaving rich theology with powerful narrative, Billings writes for church leaders and laypeople alike. Whether we are young or old, reeling from loss or clinging to our own prosperity, this book challenges us to walk a strange but wondrous path: in the midst of joy and lament, to receive mortal limits as a gift, an opportunity to give ourselves over to the Lord of life.

Theologically rooted yet eminently practical, this handbook will equip youth leaders to effectively shepherd the young people under their care—training them to live faithfully in their homes, churches, and schools.

Book excerpt: Radical. Crazy. Transformative and restless. Every word we read these days seems to suggest there’s a “next-best-thing,” if only we would change our comfortable, compromising lives. In fact, the greatest fear most Christians have is boredom—the sense that they are missing out on the radical life Jesus promised. One thing is certain. No one wants to be “ordinary.” Yet pastor and author Michael Horton believes that our attempts to measure our spiritual growth by our experiences, constantly seeking after the next big breakthrough, have left many Christians disillusioned and disappointed. There’s nothing wrong with an energetic faith; the danger is that we can burn ourselves out on restless anxieties and unrealistic expectations. What’s needed is not another program or a fresh approach to spiritual growth; it’s a renewed appreciation for the commonplace. Far from a call to low expectations and passivity, Horton invites readers to recover their sense of joy in the ordinary. He provides a guide to a sustainable discipleship that happens over the long haul—not a quick fix that leaves readers empty with unfulfilled promises. Convicting and ultimately empowering, Ordinary is not a call to do less; it’s an invitation to experience the elusive joy of the ordinary Christian life.

Book excerpt: A work of special value for beginners in the Christian life. "There is nothing more important in the Christian life than beginning right. If we begin right we can go on right. If we begin wrong the whole life that follows is likely to be wrong. If any one who reads these pages has begun wrong, it is a very simple matter to begin over again and begin right. What the right beginning in the Christian life is we are told in John 1: 12, "But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name." The right way to begin the Christian life is by receiving Jesus Christ. To any one who receives Him, He at once gives power to become a child of God. If the reader of this book should be the wickedest man on earth and should at this moment receive Jesus Christ, that very instant he would become a child of God. God says so in the most unqualified way in the verse quoted above. No one can become a child of God in any other way. No man, no matter how carefully he has been reared, no matter how well he has been sheltered from the vices and evils of this world, is a child of God until he receives Jesus Christ. We are "sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus" (Gal. 3: 26, R. V.), and in no other way." The best book we know to put into the hands of the young convert, and even in the hands of more mature Christians. It tells the young convert just what he needs to know. It will also be helpful to many who have long been Christians, but have not made that headway into the Christian life that they desire. "Many who have marked with gladness the large accession to the ranks of active Christians brought about by such revival agencies as those of Messrs. Torrey and Alexander have felt the importance of securing further instruction in the Christian life for those who have been brought to decision. Dr. Torrey himself is aware of this need and seeks to meet it in a little work entitled "How to Succeed in the Christian Life.' The suggestions are mainly in the direction of maintaining religion in the soul." -The Westminster "Intended by this well-known evangelist for young converts as a sort of guide in their new career. He hopes it may also be helpful to those who, though long on the road, have not made the progress they had hoped." -The Churchman "This book is especially written for those who are Mr. Torrey's converts. It is expected to be helpful to many other Christians also. The book bears, of course, evidences of the rugged individuality of Mr. Torrey, but his suggestions s to Bible studies are very practical and helpful. The book lays great emphasis on the privilege and duty of bringing friends and acquaintances to Christ." -The Christian Work and the Evangelist CONTENTS I. Beginning Right II. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind book in which several outstanding theologians use their expertise to examine everyday questions that Christians ask. Christians do not just believe; they think about what they believe. Moreover, they are not content with simple answers to their questions about life and meaning. The contributors to this volume therefore provide thoughtful responses to the following questions: Why are we here? Why are we so indifferent about our spiritual lives? Why do the innocent suffer? Is Jesus Christ the only way to salvation? Are there angels? Why go to church? The unity of the church--why care? What shall parents teach their children? What does my faith have to do with my job? Must Christians believe in hell? Is there life after death? The eleven contributors to this volume--which include, in addition to the editors--Kathryn Tanner, David Dawson, Thomas F. Tracy, J.A. DiNoia, Bruce D. Marshall, James J. Buckley, Michael Root, William Werpehowski, and George Hunsinger) are friends who attended the same graduate school (Yale) and had many of the same teachers. For twenty years they have been meeting once a year to talk about their work, their lives, and their thinking about the Christian faith. In this book they share with fellow Christians and curious bystanders the intellectual and spiritual wealth and excitement and complexity they have found in that faith. Ronald F. Thiemann is John Lord O'Brian Professor of Theology and Dean of Harvard Divinity School. William C. Placher is Professor of Contemporary Theology and Philosophy of Religion at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, IN.

In this revision of a foundational work, John Piper reveals how grace is not only God’s undeserved gift to us in the past, but also God’s power to make good happen for us today, tomorrow, and forever. True life for the follower of Jesus really is a moment-by-moment trust that God is dependable and fulfills his promises. This is living by faith in future grace, which provides God's mercy, provision, and wisdom—everything we need—to accomplish his good plans for us. In Future Grace, chapter by chapter—one for each day of the month—Piper reveals how cherishing the promises of God helps break the power of persistent sin issues like anxiety, despondency, greed, lust, bitterness, impatience, pride, misplaced shame, and more. Ultimate joy, peace, and hope in life and death are found in a confident, continual awareness of the reality of future grace.

Book excerpt: This is the modern English translation of Demonologie by King James. Editor's Preface: The reason I translated this text into modern English is because most people wouldn’t bother to read this text in archaic English. I think it’s important to know the contents of this booklet as it can give a great insight into the things we see happening today and what we should be aware of. Although modern science, which in the Bible is said to be “falsely so called” (1 Timothy 6 20) got many convinced that such things as spirits don’t exist, my personal experience absolutely proves such claims to be wrong, and I’m not alone in this. Many other people were also saved by Jesus from such dangerous occult practices like Hinduism and meditation after their realization that these are the traps set by Satan to get one totally demonized and sent to hell - just check YouTube Jesus testimonials for a proof. Because of my own experiences I know that what King James writes about is true. I’m not saying I have experienced everything he describes, but the things that he writes about which I have personally experienced are absolutely true, so it’s very likely that the rest of what he says about Satan and evil spirits is true also. For most people the claims of this booklet will be too fantastic to believe, and I understand this. But for those who got burnt by the occult, whether being engaged in reiki, palmistry, astrology, Wicca, chanting or any other such practices, and know the reality of spirits, this booklet will, I believe, be very helpful indeed, as it describes the operation of evil spirits and their master Satan. Lastly, I hope you won’t be put off by several references to the lesser intelligence of women in this booklet. This booklet was written in 1597, and at that time women weren’t employed but were destined to become housewives; so like I see in India today (where I live) many women are less intelligent than men due to their lack of education and their focus being only on family and marriage; so I understand why such prejudice was common at that early time in England and Scotland. From the text it’s easy to tell that King James was influenced by Calvinism which I don’t support, just to let you know. For example, he was of the opinion that only the elect could be saved. So I’m highlighting this fact so as to make you aware that I’m of a different opinion, yet I still support this work as it contains much useful information, though it doesn’t mean that I agree with everything it has to say about Christianity. To make it easier to understand this work I’ve modernized the language, simplified certain sayings, shortened some sentences, divided some long paragraphs, and researched more into particular spirits and their actions so that you understand better what King James means in certain passages. (My notes are distinguished from the main work.) Since this document was written in archaic English and Scottish languages, it took me a while to understand some sentences and phrases, but I hope that I’ve translated everything correctly; when I really didn’t understand what was meant by some phrase (which happened a few times), I simply left the phrase as it was, so that not to accidentally change the meaning. Finally, you can read the original work in several online resources out of which I’ve found this most convenient: http://www.sacred-texts.com/pag/kjd/kjd04.htm. Kindest regards, Simona Rich
