Book excerpt: From the start of its existence organized labor has been the voice of workers to improve their economic, social, and political positions. Beginning with small and very often illegal groups of involved workers it grew to the million member organizations that now exist around the globe. It is studied from many different perspectives – historical, economic, sociological, and legal – but it fundamentally involves the struggle for workers’ rights, human rights and social justice. In an often hostile environment, organized labor has tried to make the world a fairer place. Even though it has only ever covered a minority of employees in most countries, its effects on their political, economic, and social systems have been generally positive. Despite growing repression of organized labor in recent years, membership numbers are still growing for the benefit of all employees, including the non-members. Historical Dictionary of Organized Labor: Fourth Edition makes the history of this important feature of life easily accessible. The reader is guided through a chronology, an introductory essay, 600 entries on the subject, appendixes with statistical material, and an extensive bibliography including Internet sites. This book gives a thorough introduction into past and present for historians, economists, sociologists, journalists, activists, labor union leaders, and anyone interested in the development of this important issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primarily concerned with the historical roots and contemporary condition of socialism, the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Socialism offers information on writers, activists, ideas, political parties, institutions, and movements that sought_and in many cases are still seeking_to change the social and political order. It reflects the diversity in the broad movement of the left, the many variants of which include reformist social democracy, revolutionary Marxism, the New Left, and contemporary anti-capitalism. Taking up where the first edition left off, this thoroughly revised dictionary shows how socialism has been reacting, reforming and also expanding. This is done through a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and a cross-referenced dictionary section with 114 new entries, some on the current leadership, others on the many new parties of Central and Eastern Europe and the Third World, and yet others on the reaction to globalization. This book will provide a mine of information for teachers and students of political ideologies, comparative politics, political sociology, labor history, and political theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What's What in the Labor Movement: A Dictionary of Labor Affairs and Labor Terminology While some of the material contained in this volume has of necessity been gleaned from the current newspaper and periodical press, the compiler has for the most part depended upon the standard literature of the subject, and upon oflicial governmental reports and similar documents. In the American field, liberal use has been made of the exhaustive report on Labor Organizations, Labor Disputes and Arbitration, prepared by Messrs. Charles E. Edger ton and E. Dana Durand for the Federal Industrial Commission, and published in Volume XVII of the Report of that body. A num ber of the entries on trade unionism and the legal aspects of labor affairs in the United States are in large part either quoted or para phrased from that work. The Monthly Labor Review, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the United States Department of Labor, has also been a very valuable source of information. In view of the comparative frequency with which the Staff Report of the Federal Commission on Industrial Relations is quoted in these pages, it may be well to recall that in this Report, according to the chairman of the Commission, no statement or conclusion of fact adverse to the attitude or interest of any person or group of persons is submitted, except as declared or assented to by the person or by the individuals comprising the group affected. While limitations of space make it impossible to give a complete list of the many other publications consulted and utilized by the compiler, mention must at least be made of the following, which have proved particularly useful: Adams, Thomas Sewall, and Sumner, Helen L. Labor Problems. New York: The Macmillan Company. Beard, Mary. A Short History of the American Labor Movement. New York: Harcourt, Brace Co. Carlton, Frank Tracy. The History and Problems of Organized Labor. Boston: D. C. Heath Co. Carlton, Frank Tracy. Organized Labor in American History. New York: D. Appleton Co. Clay, Henry. Economics: An Introduction for) the General Reader. New York: The Macmillan Company. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike other general works on the subject, focus is on the democratic tradition of socialism rather than those elements which later became communism. Entries cover not just key thinkers, ideas, and political parties, but also education, women, literature, and policies, showing how socialism was sustained as a movement.
