Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mindy, Kimmy, and Sonia are beginning the summer between seventh and eighth grade and none of them are feeling very good about it. Mindy gained a lot of weight over the winter, and at the same time, her best friend ditched her for two more popular girls, so she spends most of her time alone, watching reruns of Friends. Kimmy has always been painfully shy, and now that her parents are getting a divorce, she has to move in with her grandparents and be the only new girl in the eighth grade. Sonia's mother has been battling cancer for the last two years, and Sonia's anxiety attacks are so bad that she had to be homeschooled for a year. All three girls reluctantly find themselves in a local theater camp where they get so swept up with the magic of putting on a musical revue that they start to forget about their own problems. Throughout the course of the summer, the three girls work through their personal issues while having the time of their lives with all the new interesting people they've been thrown in with. By the end of the summer, Mindy, Kimmy, and Sonia are officially "theater kids." They and their new friends are ready to take on eighth grade.

Book excerpt: "All people respond to music through listening. Since this music behavior is such a universal part of life, and the skills fostered through critical listening to music can transfer to many other areas, emphasizing listening in a given music curriculum is logical. Children learn actively through direct experience with given concepts. Because of this, it makes sense to approach listening instruction actively by using other music behaviors (singing, moving, chanting, creating) and aural, visual, and kinesthetic learning modes as a way to develop a deeper connection with musical material while fostering music skills and introducing or reinforcing music concepts. Listen Up! includes sample experiences that provide an opportunity for children to listen to musical selections while also fostering music skills and reinforcing given music concepts (rhythm, melody, form) that are prominent in those selections. In addition to providing an overview of the planning process for developing these types of lessons, and including sample experiences for 23 specific pieces, the collection also contains PowerPoint presentations to accompany each experience that provide material students can view and respond to as they listen." -- Provided by publisher.

As Leszczak points out, the version you purchased, played air guitar to, sang along to, and grew up with is often not the first version recorded. Like wine and cheese, some tunes do get better with age, and behind each there is a story. Little-known facts and amusing anecdotes, often gathered through Leszczak’s vast archive of personal interviews with the singers and songwriters, record producers and label owners, who wrote, sang, recorded, and distributed either the original first cut or one of its classic covers.

This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Second Quintet" -- the Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-1960s -- was one of the most innovative and influential groups in the history of the genre. Each of the musicians who performed with Davis--saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams--went on to a successful career as a top player. The studio recordings released by this group made profound contributions to improvisational strategies, jazz composition, and mediation between mainstream and avant-garde jazz, yet most critical attention has focused instead on live performances or the socio-cultural context of the work. Keith Waters' The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68 concentrates instead on the music itself, as written, performed, and recorded. Treating six different studio recordings in depth--ESP, Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, and Filles de Kilimanjaro--Waters has tracked down a host of references to and explications of Davis' work. His analysis takes into account contemporary reviews of the recordings, interviews with the five musicians, and relevant larger-scale cultural studies of the era, as well as two previously unexplored sources: the studio outtakes and Wayne Shorter's Library of Congress composition deposits. Only recently made available, the outtakes throw the master takes into relief, revealing how the musicians and producer organized and edited the material to craft a unified artistic statement for each of these albums. The author's research into the Shorter archives proves to be of even broader significance and interest, as Waters is able now to demonstrate the composer's original conception of a given piece. Waters also points out errors in the notated versions of the canonical songs as they often appear in the main sources available to musicians and scholars. An indispensible resource, The Miles Davis Quintet Studio Recordings: 1965-1968 is suited for the jazz scholar as well as for jazz musicians and aficionados of all levels.
