Book Synopsis The Past Is a Foreign Country – Revisited by : David Lowenthal
Download or read book The Past Is a Foreign Country – Revisited written by David Lowenthal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past remains essential - and inescapable. A quarter-century after the publication of his classic account of man's attitudes to his past, David Lowenthal revisits how we celebrate, expunge, contest and domesticate the past to serve present needs. He shows how nostalgia and heritage now pervade every facet of public and popular culture. History embraces nature and the cosmos as well as humanity. The past is seen and touched and tasted and smelt as well as heard and read about. Empathy, re-enactment, memory and commemoration overwhelm traditional history. A unified past once certified by experts and reliant on written texts has become a fragmented, contested history forged by us all. New insights into history and memory, bias and objectivity, artefacts and monuments, identity and authenticity, and remorse and contrition, make this book once again the essential guide to the past that we inherit, reshape and bequeath to the future.

Book Synopsis Metric Geometry of Locally Compact Groups by : Yves Cornulier
Download or read book Metric Geometry of Locally Compact Groups written by Yves Cornulier and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2016 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is the study of locally compact groups from a geometric perspective, with an emphasis on appropriate metrics that can be defined on them. The approach has been successful for finitely generated groups and can be favorably extended to locally compact groups. Parts of the book address the coarse geometry of metric spaces, where ``coarse'' refers to that part of geometry concerning properties that can be formulated in terms of large distances only. This point of view is instrumental in studying locally compact groups. Basic results in the subject are exposed with complete proofs; others are stated with appropriate references. Most importantly, the development of the theory is illustrated by numerous examples, including matrix groups with entries in the the field of real or complex numbers, or other locally compact fields such as $p$-adic fields, isometry groups of various metric spaces, and last but not least, discrete groups themselves. The book is aimed at graduate students, advanced undergraduate students, and mathematicians seeking some introduction to coarse geometry and locally compact groups.

Book Synopsis A True & Faithful Relation of what Passed for Many Yeers Between Dr. John Dee and Some Spirits by : John Dee
Download or read book A True & Faithful Relation of what Passed for Many Yeers Between Dr. John Dee and Some Spirits written by John Dee and published by Рипол Классик. This book was released on 1659 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published by the ecclesiastical Casaubon in an attempt to discredit Queen Elizabeth Is court magician, Dr. John Dee, this monumental work on spirit communication has become one of the most valuable and interesting sourcebooks for modern students of the occult. Dee partnered with a rascally Irish medium cum alchemist, Edward Kelley, in a series of esoteric experiments designed to make contact with angels and other spirit beings. The result of their efforts was not only spirit guidance (including advice that they should hold their wives in common) but the communication of an entire system of magic, now known as Enochian and generally held in high regard by practitioners of the occult arts.
